49ers | OC promising new-look offense

Wed, 18 Jun 2014 15:50:11 -0700

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman says his offense will be different in 2014. "Starting with the beginning of the offseason, we as the offensive staff, after three years here, it's time to clean out the garage type of thing." said Roman. "We went through everything we've done and really stripped it back down to it most element, basic parts and start over at square one." The offense has added WRs Brandon Lloyd, Bruce Ellington and Stevie Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: We'll have a better picture of the new-look offense next month when training camp begins. But the presence of far more healthy wide receivers could make SF a more pass-happy offense.

"As a player, all I could think of was maybe running a different play, but that's just a player mentality," TE Vernon Davis said. "Greg Roman, he called the shots. We gotta go with it and respect his calls. He believed in it, we believed in it, but it just didn't work." FS Donte Whitner added, "I'm a little surprised. But it's coach's call. Like anything, if it works, you're a genius. If it doesn't, you messed up."

49ers | Jim Harbaugh praises Greg Roman

Wed, 30 Jan 2013 06:36:56 -0800

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh believes offensive coordinator Greg Roman is changing the way people around the league are thinking about offensive football. Roman has effectively combined aspects of the read-option that QB Colin Kaepernick runs out of the pistol formation without losing the power game with fullbacks and tight ends that the team likes to run. "I think Greg Roman has done a job that is revolutionary in football," Harbaugh said. "I think the way he has mixed the trap, the power, the wham plays, into the pistol offense and into our conventional offense has been revolutionary in many ways."

49ers | Benefit when opponents focus on Vernon Davis

Mon, 29 Oct 2012 10:13:18 -0700

According to San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, three opponents this year have taken "drastic measures" to make sure TE Vernon Davis had quiet games. The three teams intent on minimizing Davis were the New York Jets, New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks. In those three games, Davis was targeted seven times and he caught five passes for 65 yards. TE Delanie Walker has been a beneficiary of coverages skewed to stop Davis; his biggest games have come against the Jets and Seahawks. RB Frank Gore ran for 131 yards and averaged 8.2 yards a carry when the Seahawks focused on stopping Davis. The Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco's Week 8 opponent, will keep an eye on Davis; however, they likely will not do anything "drastic" to keep Davis out of the game.
