New York Giants DEs Mathias Kiwanuka and Justin Tuck were each forced to play 100 percent of the defensive snaps in the Week 12 game against the Washington Redskins Monday, Dec. 2, with the team shorthanded along the defensive line. DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) is dealing with a serious shoulder injury. Tuck feels he and Kiwanuka could tough it out for the whole month if need be. "I think we can," Tuck said Monday, Dec. 2. "One thing we've been able to do all season is keep our bodies in great shape, staying on top of things in the weight room, making sure we're eating the right things. I think we're in good shape to go."

The New York Giants usually use a strict 4-3 defensive alignment, but they have used some 3-4 formations or hybrid looks that ask their defensive ends to stand up and either play outside linebacker or at least look as though they might. The idea is to confuse the opposing offense and possibly to be in better position to react to run-heavy, read-option offenses like the Washington Redskins have, and perhaps the Philadelphia Eagles will use. DE Mathias Kiwanuka played linebacker last season before moving back to defensive end, and he is someone who can fit into this hybrid system nicely.

The New York Giants need DLs Mathias Kiwanuka, Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck to get after the quarterback and improve the pass rush in 2013. With DL Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) gone, the team will be looking for a fourth pass rusher to emerge. DLs Damontre Moore, Adewale Ojomo, Adrian Tracy and Justin Trattou will all have opportunities to show what they can do during training camp and the preseason.

New York Giants DE Mathias Kiwanuka is happy to be back at his natural position, defensive end, on a full-time basis. Kiwanuka is working as the starting right defensive end spot while DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back) recovers from surgery. "It was a move I was looking forward to. I had a feeling it was coming," Kiwanuka said.

New York Giants defensive line coach Robert Nunn said DE Mathias Kiwanuka has looked very good during organized team activities. "Kiwi is off to a great start," Nunn said. "We will be able, I think, to get him more focused on staying at defensive end. He is really doing a good job so far managing it. Moving him around a little bit, at both sides of defensive end. We really like where he is from the mental standpoint and the way he has approached it in the offseason. He looks solid right now."

New York Giants LB Mathias Kiwanuka will take a starting position opposite Justin Tuck at defensive end while DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back) recovers from back surgery. Kiwanuka was already moving back to defensive end before the Pierre-Paul surgery. "There's no doubt in my mind," Kiwanuka said of holding down the starting spot in Pierre-Paul's absence. "That's the position I came into this league playing and I'm looking forward to the opportunity. Obviously we'd love to have him back and I'm sure he'll be back ready to go at a certain point. We're not gonna rush him back for any reason."

New York Giants DE Mathias Kiwanuka could move back to the defensive line, according to general manager Jerry Reese. "Well I see him as still kind of a joker type player for us,'' Reese said. "But from my view I think he will probably play more on the defensive line more than he played at linebacker in the past; just from my view. But that is Coach Coughlin's call."
