St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) and RP Jason Motte (elbow) are making progress with their throwing programs. Garcia is facing live batters in batting practice this week and is scheduled to pitch in an extended spring game later this week. Motte is further along after throwing roughly 20 pitches in a spring game Monday, April 14, and he will make two more appearances this week. The team hasn't set a date for Motte to begin a rehab assignment.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) threw 25 pitches during his third batting practice session Friday, March 21. He will throw at least one more session before the team considers using him in a minor league game, perhaps as soon as Thursday, March 27. Motte will not be used in any Grapefruit League games so that the Cardinals can backdate his stint on the disabled list at the beginning of the regular season by 10 days.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow), who's on a faster than expected track to return from Tommy Johnson surgery, will face hitters in a batting practice scenario on Friday, March 14, for the first time, according to pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. He could be the eighth-inning man sometime in April.
Fantasy Tip: The Cards don't expect to have Motte on opening day, and it's really ambitious to think that he'd be reliable in setup work soon after his return. Sometime after the break is much more rational. Motte's 2014 status has a greater effect on the fantasy value of Carlos Martinez, who's vying for a rotation spot, than he does his own.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, March 10, at his greatest level of intensity yet. He's close to clearance to face hitters in batting practice. The club hasn't ruled out the possibility that he'll pitch in a spring game if he hits all their checkpoints before they head north. Those include at least two BP sessions. The organization may opt to keep him out of major league exhibitions so that they can backdate a disabled list stint, if desired. He could still appear in minor league games. Once Motte faces hitters, it's expected that the Cardinals will have a better idea of how long he'll be sidelined.
Fantasy Tip: St. Louis is in no rush to get Motte back. He likely won't be a serious factor in the first half. It's possible that he receives save chances by the end of the season, but for the most part, Motte is off the 2014 fantasy radar.
