Rockies | Jason Motte activated from DL

Wed, 25 May 2016 13:15:12 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list Wednesday, May 25. In a corresponding move, RP Boone Logan (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Motte has potential to work his way into some save situations down the line, but for now, he is nothing more than a desperation stash in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. And while Jake McGee is a prime trade candidate, there is no guarantee Motte emerges as his successor.

Rockies | Jason Motte could be activated soon

Sun, 15 May 2016 07:58:34 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Albuquerque Wednesday, May 11, tossing a scoreless inning in his first appearance. He is expected to be activated from the disabled list within the next few days and is likely to be used in a setup role.

Fantasy Tip: Motte can be ignored outside of deep NL-only fantasy formats for now, although he could be used to close games if Jake McGee struggles down the line.

Rockies | Jason Motte nearing rehab stint

Sun, 08 May 2016 18:44:59 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) will face hitters Monday, May 9, and should begin a rehab stint shortly after.

Fantasy Tip: Motte would likely be the next man up if closer Jake McGee falters, but for now, he can be ignored in all formats.

Rockies | Jason Motte to face hitters

Thu, 05 May 2016 23:15:50 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) will face hitters Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Motte isn't worth owning right now, but he could enter the closing equation if Jake McGee falters. McGee has a 5.59 ERA, but five of his six earned runs this season came in one outing.

Rockies | Jason Motte still recovering

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 16:02:20 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) remains in Arizona. He's making some progress and is doing strengthening exercises, according to trainer Keith Dugger. "The next step for him is to start playing catch and we should see that in the next couple of days. He's pain-free. We are just letting it heal a little bit," Dugger said.

Fantasy Tip: Motte was in consideration for closing duties before he was injured this spring. Now Jake McGee seems firmly entrenched in the ninth inning, but he could have a short leash, meaning Motte could see some closing opportunities later this year if McGee falters. Keep Motte on your radar in deeper leagues if you're chasing saves.

Rockies | Jason Motte strengthening shoulder

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 16:02:59 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) began a strengthening program Monday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: Motte is a speculative stash for save chasers in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery and return timeline, but he wasn't impressive in 2015. Motte posted an underwhelming 3.91 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 through 48 1/3 innings.

Rockies | Jason Motte out with shoulder strain

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 09:39:45 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) is out indefinitely with a shoulder strain and will miss the start of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Motte could resurface later in the year, but Jake McGee looks to have little keeping him from the closer spot. Motte is probably just a depth stash in NL-only leagues, and McGee is a high-end RP3.

Rockies | Closer-by-committee approach for Rockies?

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:10:07 -0800

Colorado Rockies RPs Jake McGee, Jason Motte, Chad Qualls and Adam Ottavino (elbow) are all candidates to pitch in the ninth inning, according to bullpen coach Darren Holmes. Holmes noted the bullpen will focus on retiring hitters at critical times and not predetermined roles.

Fantasy Tip: Bullpen by committees are a hassle for fantasy owners, and given the home venue in this discussion, the fantasy value is low for all four arms in the majority of leagues. However, it is also Friday, Feb. 5, so a lot can change before the season starts, and a full-time closer could emerge at some point. For the time being, though, proceed with caution when approaching this bullpen. Ottavino has the lowest value because he'll be for the majority of the first half of the season following Tommy John surgery last year.

Rockies | Two relievers headed to Colorado

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 06:33:30 -0800

Free-agent RP Jason Motte (Cubs) and Chad Qualls (Astros) reached two-year deals with the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Both righties could figure into the closing mix. Neither has the electric stuff to give fantasy owners confidence in taking a Rockies closer early, but both are worth consideration for a flyer as a high-end third reliever.
