Nationals | Casey Janssen throws 16 pitches

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 16:08:27 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Casey Janssen (shoulder) threw 16 pitches without problems in an extended spring training game Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Janssen will pitch in a setup role when he returns to the Nationals, and he is nothing more then a speculative saves flier in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Aaron Barrett may have leapfrogged Janssen as the next-in-line closer, too.

Nationals | Casey Janssen unlikely for OD

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 15:32:12 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Casey Janssen (shoulder) is dealing with rotator cuff tendonitis in his right shoulder, and he's unlikely to be ready for opening day. However, the Nationals don't think it's a long-term injury. "He's had it before," manager Matt Williams said. "They did an MRI, found that, and he's going to be fine. It's good news. No real issue, other than tendonitis back there. So we'll take care of that and get back going." Janssen hasn't pitched in a week, and he'll be shut down for at least a couple of days before receiving an anti-inflammatory injection. He was expected to be the team's primary eighth-inning reliever to set up RP Drew Storen in the closer's role.

Fantasy Tip: Janssen isn't expected to miss much time, so he'll likely be back in the setup role once he's healthy. He's the handcuff to Drew Storen if you're in a really deep mixed league or NL-only format. Storen (toe) was also dealing with an injury Monday, but he's expected to be fine for opening day.

Nationals | Casey Janssen to be setup man

Wed, 04 Feb 2015 14:37:10 -0800

Washington Nationals RP Casey Janssen said the team told him that he will set up RP Drew Storen this season. "I talked to (general manager) Mike Rizzo and (manager) Matt Williams, and they both said, 'You are going to pitch quality innings in the game.' They said Drew Storen is our closer. My job is to get the ball to him. I'm going to embrace that role and try to get him the ball with the lead."

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen slumping after food poisoning

Sat, 30 Aug 2014 07:20:58 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen has been in a slump since he came down with food poisoning during the All-Star break. He has a 7.98 ERA in the second half since his vacation to the Dominican Republic, where he had a meal that made him sick. He was taking fluids through an IV before starting a stretch on July 20. Starting on that date, he would pitch in five of the Jays' next eight games. Janssen is currently working on mechanical and strategic changes to deal with his struggles.

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen struggling

Mon, 25 Aug 2014 10:02:49 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen blew the save against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, Aug. 23, and struggled in a tie game Sunday, Aug. 24. "He's definitely struggling right now," manager John Gibbons said after Sunday's 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay. "His game is location. He's definitely off with that. He's given up a lot of hits." Janssen has allowed 10 runs and 18 hits in 13 2/3 innings in 16 games since the All-Star break for an ERA of 6.58. He returned to action around eight pounds lighter after a bout with food poisoning in July, but it's unknown if the illness had any effect on his pitching. Gibbons believes Janssen is in need of a mechanical fix, but the coaching staff has yet to detect any mechanical flaws from Janssen.
