Blue Jays | Casey Janssen unlikely to be ready when eligible

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 13:35:17 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen (back) will throw a side session Wednesday, April 9, and he expects to need one or two rehab outings before he returns from the disabled list, which means he's unlikely to be ready to return when eligible.

Fantasy Tip: Janssen is eligible to come off the DL Sunday, but that probably won't happen. He could, however, be ready to go at some point early next week. Janssen is expected to be the team's closer when healthy, but they may ease him back in, giving Sergio Santos more run as a fantasy closer.

Blue Jays | Don't expect Casey Janssen out long

Mon, 31 Mar 2014 08:54:39 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said the team doesn't expect RP Casey Janssen (side, back) to be out long with a strain in his left side and lower back. C Erik Kratz was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo when the team put Janssen on the disabled list. Janssen will be eligible to return April 13.

Fantasy Tip: This could be a tricky injury to shake quickly, especially for Janssen, since he didn't see much action this spring. Prepare for an absence longer than his short DL stint. If you haven't already done so, Sergio Santos should be added immediately in all leagues.

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen to DL

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen (abdominal) was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a left abdominal/lower back strain, retroactive to March 29. RP Sergio Santos will close in his place.

Fantasy Tip: Santos is an immediate add in all formats and has the stuff to hold the job should the team decide to stick with him.

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen makes debut

Mon, 24 Mar 2014 15:57:47 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen (shoulder) made his spring debut by tossing a scoreless inning Monday, March 24. Janssen didn't top 86 mph with his fastball during the outing, though, which may be a concern after he dealt with a sore shoulder at the start of camp. His velocity is expected to rise with a few more outings before the regular season. Janssen is expected to make back-to-back appearances later this week.

Fantasy Tip: Janssen doesn't need a ton of innings to be ready for the regular season, but the lower velocity could be an issue in the season's first month. Janssen remains at a good value in drafts.

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen not worried by inactivity

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 14:49:54 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen (shoulder) has yet to make his spring debut with less than two weeks until opening day, but he's not too concerned. "The way I feel, the way I'm playing catch, the way the ball's coming out, I'm anticipating good things and I don't see why with the next however many days we have left that I can't get there," he said. Janssen has had soreness in the back of his right shoulder for three weeks but is scheduled to pitch Friday, March 21, after throwing live batting practice Tuesday, March 18. Manager John Gibbons wants Janssen to pitch in at least four spring games, including once on back-to-back days.

Fantasy Tip: It's worrisome that Janssen hasn't pitched in a game yet, but the good news is that relievers typically don't need nearly as much work in camp as starters do in order to be ready for the regular season. Anticipate the Blue Jays being cautious with Janssen's workload early on, which could work in his favor for the long haul.
