Reds | Johnny Cueto returns to camp

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:39:32 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto returned to camp Thursday, March 26, after going to the Dominican Republic to be with his mother, who needed open-heart surgery. Cueto missed his scheduled start last Friday, but he feels he's on track for opening day. He was working out with the pitchers Thursday morning. Cueto will have two more spring starts before he faces the Pittsburgh Pirates April 6 in Cincinnati. Manager Bryan Price said Cueto will likely throw in a minor league game in his next outing.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) should be good to go for opening day against the Bucs. Cueto has been very solid in his career at Cincinnati, even though it's known as more of a pitcher's park. He also has dominated Pittsburgh in his career to the tune of a 2.21 ERA. It's safe to say that he'll be a top-flight option at FantasyScore to kick off the MLB season.

Reds | Johnny Cueto still has time to be ready for OD

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 16:22:07 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto still has time to return, get two starts and be ready for opening day, according to manager Bryan Price.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) is a fantasy ace who should be drafted in the early rounds to anchor fantasy rotations. A matchup with the Pirates -- they scored the 10th most runs in 2014 -- isn't ideal for spending heavily to use Cueto in FantasyScore games, though.

Reds | Johnny Cueto away from Reds

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 15:54:19 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto has returned to the Dominican Republic to be with a family member who is dealing with health issues. Manager Bryan Price said it's unknown when Cueto will rejoin the team. He is currently scheduled to start on opening day against the Pittsburgh Pirates April 6. Cueto was also scheduled to start in spring training Friday, March 20, but he didn't make the outing. He will continue to throw in the Dominican Republic.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto should be ready to pitch in the season opener, but even if he has his first start of the 2015 season pushed back, he should be considered a fantasy baseball ace. Look to draft him in the early rounds.

Reds | Cincy announces rotation

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 11:22:38 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SPs Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Anthony DeSclafani, Jason Marquis and Raisel Iglesias will comprise the team's starting rotation to enter the regular season. SP Paul Maholm is competing for a bullpen spot.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto is really the only pitcher in this five that deserves heavy fantasy baseball attention as an ace for your fake staff. The others are all likely just NL-only targets, with DeSclafani and Iglesias possessing intriguing upside.

Reds | Ground balls a key for Johnny Cueto

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 13:49:31 -0800

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto induced ground balls at will Thursday, Feb. 27, according to manager Bryan Price. Price noted Cueto's control is the key to his elevation to being able to successfully produce ground-ball contact.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto had a 46.2 % ground-ball rate last season, which was slightly above the league average of 44.8%. His real value centered on his 242 strikeouts. Continue to view Cueto as a low-end No. 1 starter in fantasy leagues. However, an uptick in ground balls this season would only strengthen the likelihood of him repeating his career-best 2014 season.

Reds | Johnny Cueto wants to stay with Reds

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 15:53:10 -0800

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto said he wants to stay with the Reds and would like to sign a contract extension before the end of spring training Thursday, Feb. 19.

Fantasy Tip: It is unlikely the Reds will dish out the dough Cueto seeks, but it is also unlikely to have any impact on his fantasy stock. Cueto posted career-best numbers across the board last season, including a beastly 242 strikeouts. Slight regression isn't out of the question, but Cueto still projects as a No. 1 starter in mixed leagues and will likely fall outside the first 12 arms off the board on draft day.
