Padres | Strong outing for Brandon Morrow

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 16:52:32 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow made just his second Cactus League appearance Wednesday, March 30, allowing one run and a hit while walking two and striking out six of the nine hitters he faced in three innings.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow has been in the competition for one of the final rotation spots, but the fact that shoulder and illness have slowed him down this spring don't bode well for his chances. Regardless, it's a step in the right direction. Morrow must prove he's healthy and stick in the rotation for those in mixed leagues to give him a look.

Padres | SD's rotation competition

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 11:17:27 -0700

San Diego Padres SPs Colin Rea, Brandon Morrow, Robbie Erlin and Drew Pomeranz are battling for the final two rotation spots behind SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his extensive injury history, Morrow seems the least likely to win a job and the most unattractive to fantasy owners. Pomeranz is transitioning to a starting role and perhaps is the most attractive for a low investment late in deep mixed affairs. Youngsters Rea and Erlin will both be worth a late-round investment if they win jobs, too.

Padres | Brandon Morrow on track

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 10:52:53 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (illness) has joined the rest of the pitchers and is throwing off a mound consistently in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Talk about an injury risk, Morrow is it. He hasn't pitched more than 100 innings in the big leagues since 2012 with the Toronto Blue Jays. He could surprise with the Friars, though, if he stays healthy and lands in the starting rotation. Keep an eye on him in NL-only leagues.

Padres | SD's rotation competition

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 14:57:39 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner are penciled in the starting rotation. SPs Brandon Maurer, Colin Rea, Robbie Erlin, Carlos Villanueva and Drew Pomeranz will compete for the final two spots this spring. SP Brandon Morrow could also be in the mix.

Fantasy Tip: Maurer probably present the most upside of the group because of his strikeout abilities, but how well will he transition from reliever to starter? Pomeranz also presents some intriguing upside if he wins a job, but he may be better off in relief, as well. Stay tuned for who wins these final jobs. They could both certainly be worth a late-round flier in deep mixed formats.

Padres | Brandon Morrow could return in 2016

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 10:17:14 -0700

San Diego Padres assistant general manager Josh Stein said the team is open to bringing SP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) back next year. "I think it's early, but we acquired him knowing that there was a risk of an injury and the contract was structured to take that into account," Stein said. "I certainly wouldn't say that there's not an opportunity to explore something similar going forward." Morrow went 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts this season.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) could return to San Diego on an incentive-laden contract similar to what Josh Johnson received after missing the entire 2014 season. He should be dumped in all seasonal leagues and there is no guarantee that he will be at 100 percent by the time spring training rolls around.

Padres | Brandon Morrow to have surgery

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 15:51:51 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) will have surgery in Los Angeles Wednesday, Aug. 19, to fix a right shoulder impingement. Morrow's recovery will last three to four months.

Fantasy Tip: You can officially dump Morrow ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) in any deep leagues if you were still stashing him. There's no guarantee that he'll be good to go for spring training next year, either, given his extensive injury history.

Padres | Brandon Morrow elects surgery

Sat, 08 Aug 2015 16:43:20 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) has elected to have season-ending shoulder surgery in the coming weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow was pretty effective in his short window this season. If you were stashing him in NL-only formats, it's time to cut bait.

Padres | Brandon Morrow likely finished for 2015

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 15:11:45 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) has an impingement of his right shoulder. He could undergo season-ending surgery, which would hold him out of action for three to four months.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) could also attempt to rehab the injury, but it is likely he is finished for 2015. Consider him a desperation stash in deep leagues, and there will likely be a followup announcement on what the next step is for Morrow.

Padres | Brandon Morrow with another setback

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 09:33:33 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) won't make his next scheduled rehab start because of shoulder soreness. He is headed to San Diego to visit with a team doctor.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow made just five starts for the Friars before going on the DL this season, and he hasn't pitched in the majors since. Another setback could mean we won't see him at least until September, if at all. There's little chance that Morrow contributes significantly for the Padres or fantasy owners in 2015.

Padres | Brandon Morrow continues progression

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 15:17:31 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Brandon Morrow (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, July 7, and he is scheduled to pitch a simulated game Saturday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: Morrow ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) remains a stash candidate in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats, but FantayScore players will want to take a wait-and-see approach with Morrow. Allow him to prove himself in a start or two before utilizing him in contests. Continue to check back for updates on Morrow's return timeline and progress.
