Giants | Tim Lincecum facing lengthy rehab

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 16:12:54 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) is looking at a five-month recovery after having hip surgery Thursday, Sept. 3, according to head trainer Dave Groeschner. The procedure involved fixing a torn labrum and shaving down the bone to treat an impingement.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has enough time to recover in time for spring training next year, but that's far from a guarantee. Hip injuries can be tricky, especially for a pitcher like Lincecum of short stature who relies on plenty of torque from his hips to generate velocity. He probably shouldn't be drafted in shallow mixed leagues in 2016, but he could be worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues if he's throwing in spring training.

Giants | Tim Lincecum will have hip surgery

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 14:21:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) will undergo season-ending hip surgery, according to general manager Bobby Evans. "The next step for him is to do everything he can and get back and get well, but it's going to take him out for the season," Evans said. "What that leads to in terms of his progression healthwise will dictate what opportunities he has with us or elsewhere."

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum has a long road ahead of him before returning to fantasy relevancy. After all, he owns a 4.68 ERA through his last 615 2/3 innings dating back to the beginning of the 2012 season. He might be best suited as a reliever going forward, too. At best, he is a late-round flier next spring and potential NL-only and cavernous mixed option.

Giants | Tim Lincecum done for the year

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 09:30:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) has been shut down for the season, according to the Giants general manager.

Fantasy Tip: While it wasn't relayed, it's likely that Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will have surgery on his hip in the near future to fix a degenerative condition. The surgery should allow him to be ready for spring training in 2016 barring any setbacks. Lincecum will be a late-round flier in fantasy drafts next spring, and he could be a surprise performer if he can regain his velocity. He could also be pitching for another team next year, as he'll be a free agent this winter.

Giants | Tim Lincecum may need surgery

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 11:08:47 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) will visit with a hip specialist in Colorado Wednesday, Sept. 2, to determine if he'll need to have surgery on his degenerative hip. He's already visited multiple doctors for his injury, and he's expected to make a final decision tomorrow. Lincecum doesn't have severe pain, but he's bothered by instability that has often caused him to slip on the mound during his rehab. Doctors have told him he would be ready for spring training if he undergoes surgery, and they believe his velocity decline is directly related to his hip. Lincecum wasn't progressing as he hoped after receiving multiple cortisone shots.

Fantasy Tip: Either way, Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has likely thrown his last pitch for the Giants this year, so he can be ignored everywhere. If he recovers in time for the regular season next year, he could be a flier in the late rounds of fantasy drafts, and as a free agent this winter, his best chances to make a fantasy impact in 2016 may be somewhere other than SF.

Giants | Tim Lincecum not close to returning

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 18:56:08 -0700

Contrary to a previous report, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy said SP Tim Lincecum (hip) is "not close" to returning from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain if Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will rejoin the rotation or head to the bullpen when he is healthy enough to return. If he does return to a starting role, FantasyScore owners should avoid using him in his first game back so that he can prove he is both healthy and effective.

Giants | Tim Lincecum nearing a return

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 18:44:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) is expected to be ready to return from the 15-day disabled list Sept. 1, manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) could be used in the rotation, or he might be used out of the bullpen. His status is up in the air. FantasyScore players should ignore him until he can officially return to the rotation and prove his health through a full start without any setbacks.

Giants | Tim Lincecum to face hitters

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 23:48:32 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (hip) is scheduled to face hitters in a simulated game later this week.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is nearer to a return to the roster, but you should leave him off FantasyScore until he has had a chance to prove himself with a start or two.

Giants | Tim Lincecum not ready

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 12:25:09 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (arm) isn't ready to go on a rehab assignment after throwing off a bullpen mound Tuesday, Aug. 10, according to manager Bruce Bochy. The team plans on stretching Lincecum out some more, but there is no word on when he will face live hitters or throw in a simulated game.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) appears to be behind Tim Hudson in his rehab. There's a chance the Giants use Lincecum as a reliever when he's ready to return, which would kill all of his fantasy value. If Lincecum returns to the rotation, he'll mainly be a matchup play in deep mixed leagues and on FantasyScore.

Giants | Tim Lincecum throws bullpen

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 18:19:22 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (arm) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain when Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will be able to make his way back to the rotation, if at all this season. FantasyScore players will want to steer clear until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game or two.

Giants | Tim Lincecum starts soft toss

Sun, 02 Aug 2015 05:31:08 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum (arm) started doing some soft toss Saturday, Aug. 1. Manager Bruce Bochy said Lincecum is making progress.

Fantasy Tip: Lincecum ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has been on the disabled list since getting hit in the arm, but he's also dealing with deterioration of his hips. It is unclear when he'll be able to return to the mound this season, and he should only be stashed in deeper NL-only leagues.
