Rockies | Closer-by-committee approach for Rockies?

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:10:07 -0800

Colorado Rockies RPs Jake McGee, Jason Motte, Chad Qualls and Adam Ottavino (elbow) are all candidates to pitch in the ninth inning, according to bullpen coach Darren Holmes. Holmes noted the bullpen will focus on retiring hitters at critical times and not predetermined roles.

Fantasy Tip: Bullpen by committees are a hassle for fantasy owners, and given the home venue in this discussion, the fantasy value is low for all four arms in the majority of leagues. However, it is also Friday, Feb. 5, so a lot can change before the season starts, and a full-time closer could emerge at some point. For the time being, though, proceed with caution when approaching this bullpen. Ottavino has the lowest value because he'll be for the majority of the first half of the season following Tommy John surgery last year.

Sat, 19 Dec 2015 16:13:10 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino signed a three-year, $10.4 million contract extension Saturday, Dec. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino is likely out until midseason after Tommy John surgery, but he could figure into the closing mix late in 2016.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino doing well

Thu, 21 May 2015 17:45:30 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino (elbow) said his elbow "doesn't hurt or anything" Thursday, May 21, two weeks after undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino won't be an option for 2016 fantasy drafts, but the fact that he's doing well shortly after the surgery could point toward Ottavino returning at some point next season.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino facing Tommy John surgery

Mon, 04 May 2015 14:29:56 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino (elbow) said he will likely require season-ending Tommy John surgery to repair his injured right elbow Monday, May 4. Ottavino has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will meet with Dr. James Andrews.

Fantasy Tip: Unless you're able to roster Ottavino in a DL slot, there is no need to keep him. Pitching with a torn ulnar collateral ligament is a ticking time bomb in the real and fake game. John Axford appears to he the closer for the foreseeable future for the Rockies.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino seeking answers

Fri, 01 May 2015 09:59:17 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino (elbow) is still seeking multiple orthopedist opinions regarding the health of his elbow.

Fantasy Tip: John Axford's rope just got a little longer. Ottavino is worth stashing on your DL, but Axford needs to be picked up in most formats.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino also has elbow issue

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 05:53:48 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino (elbow, triceps) had an MRI also reveal inflammation in his right elbow, which will likely keep him out longer than two weeks. Manager Walt Weiss said it's not so much that Ottavino has two injuries, but that the triceps inflammation is lower on his arm, nearer the elbow.

Fantasy Tip: John Axford should be picked up in deeper formats or if you need saves.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino put on DL

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 15:01:40 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino (triceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right triceps inflammation Monday, April 27. RP Jorge Rondon was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino should be stashed in a DL slot in all leagues. Those in need of saves should immediately run to the waiver wire and add John Axford, if he's available. Axford is expected to be first in line for save chances with Ottavino ailing, with Rafael Betancourt likely the setup man.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino asked for day off

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 15:30:45 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino is not injured, but he asked for the day off Thursday, April 23, after complaining of "usual pitcher's soreness."

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino had an 11-pitch save against the San Diego Padres Wednesday night. In his absence Thursday, John Axford nailed down the save Thursday. With LaTroy Hawkins on the DL, Axford is likely next in line for save opportunities, but Ottavino should continue to serve as the Rockies' main fireman in the ninth inning.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino has new approach

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 16:52:10 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino has dominated right-handed hitters in the last two seasons, allowing a .218 batting average. However, lefties hit .333 off of him. He has since tweaked his approach against left-handers, breaking out a cut fastball and putting his changeup in his back pocket. So far in 2015, lefties are 0-for-5 with one walk against him.

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino has the pure stuff to stick in the Rockies' closer role for the entire season if he can stay healthy. Adding a new wrinkle to his arsenal and approach should make him more effective against lefties, too. After Walt Weiss named him the closer earlier this week, he should now be owned in 100% of standard leagues. If he's still available in your league, pounce quickly.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino picks up first save

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 08:53:23 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino picked up his first save of the season over the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, April 14, after manager Walt Weiss declared Ottavino the team's closer over RP LaTroy Hawkins. Ottavino struck out all three hitters he faced. "Otto was dominant tonight," Weiss told reporters after the game. "He's got closer's stuff."

Fantasy Tip: Ottavino should now be owned in all fantasy baseball leagues. Hawkins could eventually earn the closer's role back, but it's unlikely. There's no real reason to hold onto him in any leagues if he's not pitching in the ninth.
