Astros | Doug Fister a risky addition

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 08:06:30 -0800

Houston Astros SP Doug Fister was a risky signing for the team because of his MRI, but the team is confident that Fister will be healthy this season, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow.

Fantasy Tip: Fister likely will be in the middle of the team's starting rotation this season if he is healthy. Fister has had success in the past and could be a late-round option in deeper leagues, but owners should not be counting on him this season.

Astros | Doug Fister slots in at No. 4

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 10:21:40 -0800

Updating earlier reports, Houston Astros SP Doug Fister will slot in as the team's fourth starter.

Fantasy Tip: Fister is worth a flyer as an SP4 or SP5, but his steep velocity drop is concerning. Don't overvalue him because of his productive past.

Astros | Doug Fister agrees with Houston

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 09:06:07 -0800

Free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) agreed to a one-year deal with the Houston Astros Thursday, Jan. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Fister has experienced a steep velocity drop, and the ballpark doesn't suit him very well. He's still worth a flyer as an SP4 or SP5 considering how good he has been in the past.

Astros | Doug Fister an option for Houston?

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 11:33:44 -0800

Free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) could be an option for the Houston Astros since the team has considered signing him to fill out their starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Fister likely will receive a short-term deal from a team in the near future and should be in a starting rotation in 2016. Fister posted a disappointing 4.19 ERA last season with only 63 strikeouts but could be a late-round option in deeper leagues depending on his new team.

Orioles | Baltimore hesitant on pitchers

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 08:43:57 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles do not want to give up a first-round pick in order to sign free-agent SP Yovani Gallardo (Rangers), according to general manager Dan Duquette. They also haven't made an offer to free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) and don't think free-agent SP Cliff Lee (elbow) is ready to pitch.

Fantasy Tip: Fister is probably the the most intriguing pitcher of the three because of his heavy ground-ball profile as depth for your deep mixed rotation, but a move to the hitter-friendly environment of Camden Yards would kill a lot of optimism.

Marlins | Miami considering Doug Fister, Alfredo Simon

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 12:06:26 -0800

The Miami Marlins are considering free-agent SPs Doug Fister (Nationals) and Alfredo Simon (Tigers) as they look to add a veteran starter to their rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Neither pitcher would have much value in a traditional shallow mixed league, but Fister might be worth a look in the late rounds of deep mixed formats as an extreme ground-ball pitcher in a nice pitcher's park. Simon isn't much of a K artist either, but he gives up too much hard contact to be successful for long periods.

MLB | Doug Fister seeking two years

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:55:35 -0800

Free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) is seeking a two-year deal worth around $22 million.

Fantasy Tip: Fister had an alarming velocity loss, which led to questions of the state of his shoulder. He's a rotation depth option in fantasy, but there's not a lot of upside.

Marlins | Miami interested in Doug Fister

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 17:43:36 -0800

The Miami Marlins have had internal discussions about free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals).

Fantasy Tip: Fister went 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA in 25 appearances (15 starts) for the Nationals last season and missed more than a month due to a forearm injury, eventually losing his spot in the starting rotation due to ineffectiveness. He's a prime candidate for a bounce-back season and could be worth taking a flier on in single-universe and deep mixed leagues.

Tigers | DET interested in Doug Fister

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 17:01:13 -0800

Free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) is attracting interest from several teams, including the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Fister went 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA during an injury-plagued 2015 season that saw him lose his spot in the Nats' starting rotation down the stretch. He experienced a great deal of success with Detroit from 2011 to 2013 and it is expected that he would be used as a starter regardless of which team he ends up with. Fister should be available in the middle or later rounds of drafts for single-universe and deep mixed leagues next spring.
