Angels | Rafael Ortega sent down

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 09:16:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega was sent to the minors Saturday, June 11. In corresponding moves, OF Todd Cunningham was recalled and OF Craig Gentry (spine) was moved to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Left field has been an absolute disaster for the Angels this year, and they haven't gotten any traction out of the position. Cunningham figures to share time with Shane Robinson in left field now, at least until Daniel Nava is healthy. Cunningham is hitless in eight at-bats this year and has a career .206 average with no home runs in three years. You should avoid the Cunningham/Robinson platoon, even in deep AL-only leagues.

Angels | Craig Gentry returning next week

Sun, 22 May 2016 03:41:49 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Craig Gentry (back) played his second game of his rehab assignment with Class A Inland Empire Saturday, May 21, and he is expected to be activated from the disabled list next week.

Fantasy Tip: Gentry is nothing more than a low-end cavernous mixed and AL-only option. He has received just 353 plate appearances over the past three seasons and returned an underwhelming .222/.290/.263 slash line. However, he should see semi-regular playing time, which keeps him in the mix in those deep formats.

Angels | Craig Gentry resumes activities

Wed, 11 May 2016 23:10:08 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Craig Gentry (back) has resumed baseball activities, as he makes his way back from a back strain. However, there is still no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Gentry is a reserve outfielder only worth using in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues and as a salary saver in DFS when healthy.

Angels | Craig Gentry on the DL

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:14:02 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Craig Gentry (back) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, May 1, with a right lumbar spine strain. OF Shane Robinson was called up from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Robinson is expected to share time in left field with Rafael Ortega with Gentry sidelined. The 5-9 outfielder has only five career home runs in seven years in the majors and won't offer fantasy owners much even with his new opportunity. Save him for the most cavernous AL-only leagues if you're hurting for a warm body.

Angels | Craig Gentry nursing stiff back

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 23:47:15 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Craig Gentry (back) was unavailable Saturday, April 30, against the Texas Rangers due to a stiff back.

Fantasy Tip: Gentry is considered day to day. When healthy he is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy play.

Angels | Rafael Ortega on the bench

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 11:34:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Sunday, April 24. OF Craig Gentry will start in left field and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gentry has recorded only one hit in his last eight games and should be avoided by owners in all leagues.

Angels | Craig Gentry batting second vs. lefty

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 12:30:44 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Craig Gentry is batting second against Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone Friday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Gentry has been batting second against southpaws, as the right-handed hitter in the platoon with Daniel Nava in left field. Being on the smaller side of the timeshare restricts Gentry's fantasy value to cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, especially since he doesn't offer much fantasy upside to begin with. Gentry owns a career .273/.355/.365 slash line against left-handed arms and is nothing more than a low-priced flier in daily contests.

Angels | Daniel Nava sits

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 16:21:58 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava is out of the lineup Saturday, April 9, with OF Craig Gentry hitting second.

Fantasy Tip: The left-handed hitting Nava sits out against lefty Cole Hamels. Gentry's .261 average against lefties the last three years isn't anything special to give him a start in fantasy tonight.

Angels | Daniel Nava could take over LF

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 16:20:31 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava is set up to get the most plate appearances in left field, though he would still likely sit against most left-handed pitchers. OF Craig Gentry, a right-handed hitter, would "start basically every third day" if that's the case, but there will probably be an open competition in spring training for the job. This would also include OFs Ji-Man Choi, Rafael Ortega and Todd Cunningham.

Fantasy Tip: Clearly, Nava and Gentry would have the highest ceiling out of everyone in this competition, especially the former, who slashed a respectable .278/.364/.403 with the Boston Red Sox from 2012-14. Gentry, meanwhile, has pretty much always been a platoon player so that will probably remain the case in Anaheim. Keep an eye on Nava if he prevails with the job.

Angels | Daniel Nava signs with Halos

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 15:38:23 -0800

Free-agent OF Daniel Nava (Rays) signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Wednesday, Dec. 16. Nava could form a platoon in left field with OF Craig Gentry next year. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Nava bounced around last year with the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays as a reserve outfielder, and he hit .194 (27-for-139) in limited action over 60 games. He's a career .281 hitter against right-handed pitching but has very limited power and won't play everyday. He's strictly an AL-only commodity for depth if he's platooning.
