Pirates | Pittsburgh interested in Justin Masterson

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 17:21:15 -0800

The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of "eight to 10" teams that have recently expressed interest in free-agent SP Justin Masterson (Red Sox).

Fantasy Tip: Masterson is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder that prematurely ended his 2015 season, after he went 4-2 with a 5.61 ERA in 18 appearances (nine starts) for Boston. He is nothing more than a late-round flier at this point.

MLB | Justin Masterson has shoulder surgery

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 09:22:23 -0700

Free-agent SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday, Sept. 30, and is expected to be at full strength for spring training next year, according to his agent Randy Rowley. Masterson was 4-2 with a 5.61 ERA in 18 outings before being released by the Boston Red Sox this year. His fastball had been down to 87.4 mph after a series of injuries slowed him down.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson's value heading into next year will depend on where he lands in free agency and whether he has a shot at a starting rotation spot. He shouldn't be drafted in traditional shallow mixed leagues even with a rotation spot locked down.

Astros | Preston Tucker batting second vs. Boston

Fri, 03 Jul 2015 12:51:42 -0700

Houston Astros OF Preston Tucker is batting second against Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson Friday, July 3.

Fantasy Tip: Tucker ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is batting just .171 with a .465 OPS over his past 12 games, so he isn't in the best current form. Although, he does sports a respectable .244 ISO and .353 wOBA against righties this season, so there is upside as a flier at FantasyScore Friday.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson back to rotation

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 10:34:48 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson will move back into a starting rotation spot after the team optioned SP Joe Kelly to the minors Thursday, June 25. Masterson will start against the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday, June 28.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) isn't very attractive to FantasyScore users or those in traditional leagues, as he was sporting a 6.37 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 6.1 strikeouts per nine innings before his injury. Only AL-only owners desperate for pitching should look his way. Avoid him on FantasyScore Sunday.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson heading to 'pen

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 16:41:59 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson will move to the bullpen after being activated from the disabled list Tuesday, June 23, according to manager John Farrell. Masterson has lost his rotation spot to SP Eduardo Rodriguez. Masterson had a 6.37 ERA in seven starts this year and saw his velocity drop before landing on the DL. The Red Sox hope Masterson can recover some velocity while pitching in shorter spurts.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) loses any little fantasy value he had remaining with this move, although there's a chance he could return to the rotation at some point if an injury or poor performance reopens a spot. Drop Masterson in all leagues.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson activated from DL

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 13:57:47 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) was activated from 15-day disabled list Tuesday, June 23.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has not pitched since the middle of May and is returning with a 6.37 ERA. Owners on FantasyScore should see how he pitches in a few starts before considering him as an option for their lineups.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson makes rehab start

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 23:02:15 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) allowed two runs, four hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings in a minor-league rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson should be avoided in FantasyScore until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks. He could return in a relief role, too, and that would kill any fantasy appeal for now.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson impressive

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 19:24:49 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) allowed one run on two hits over six innings in what was likely his final rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket Wednesday, June 10. However, his fastball hovered around the mid-to-high 80s, instead of approaching the low 90s fastball he featured during his last healthy season in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) had struggled in his previous rehab starts but made a mechanical adjustment toward the end of his last outing which allowed him to get more downward movement on his pitches. It is uncertain if he will replace Joe Kelly in the rotation once he is activated or if he will be turned into a long reliever.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson to return soon?

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 15:40:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) will make his next rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket Wednesday, June 10, and his minor league rehab assignment could come to an end after that if everything goes well. Manager John Farrell isn't setting a date for the return of Masterson, who has struggled in his previous rehab outings. However, he did discover something valuable late in his last start when he positioned his back foot in his delivery in a way that let him get more downward movement on the ball. SP Joe Kelly is the one in danger of losing his spot when Masterson is ready.

Fantasy Tip: The BoSox will have a tough decision to make between Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) and Kelly. But the one thing for sure is that youngster Eduardo Rodriguez ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future. He should now be owned in all leagues, and he could continue to help fantasy owners everywhere for much of the second half unless Boston plays it safe and limits his innings. Masterson and Kelly are strictly weaker matchup plays on FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson makes rehab start

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 09:13:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) gave up three runs and two hits while walking two and striking out two in a rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket Sunday, May 31.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) should be ready to return to the rotation in short order. Boston is currently using a six-man rotation, and there are several candidates that would be in danger of being bumped out, including Joe Kelly and Steven Wright. Masterson had a 6.37 ERA in seven starts this year before being injured, so you'll want to make sure he has a juicy matchup before even considering him at FantasyScore again.
