Cleveland Indians SP Justin Masterson is increasing the volume of his four-seam fastballs during bullpen sessions in order to try and increase his arm strength and gain back some velocity on his pitches. "I think right now, he just can't find that four-seam velocity that he had last year," pitching coach Mickey Callaway said. "I wouldn't say he's reinventing himself. I think he's playing the cards that he's dealt right now. We're working towards finding the four-seam velocity again and he's been working hard." Masterson's average fastball velocity is down a few mph this season, as well as his slider. Regardless, he's struck out 15 and walked four for a 2.84 ERA in 12 2/3 innings in his last two outings.
Fantasy Tip: Some mechanical adjustments Masterson has made probably have something to do with his drop in velocity. It's still early in the year, so this trend isn't too alarming just yet, especially since he's having positive results.

Cleveland Indians SP Justin Masterson thinks some mechanical adjustments he's made recently with pitching coach Mickey Callaway are responsible for his decreased velocity early in the year. "It's not the 95 or 96 (mph) like I'd like it to be yet," Masterson said. "Hopefully that's what we're working on. And then we made an adjustment. We were flying open quite a bit the last couple outings. My arm feels great. The movement is great. The slider is great. It's more we were kind of flying, so now going into (Friday), we did a little bit better of staying behind it. Masterson said he expects his velocity to increase with more time.
