Athletics | Ben Zobrist sitting out vs. Astros

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 15:09:08 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Ben Zobrist (heel) will not play against the Houston Astros Wednesday, April 15. Manger Bob Melvin said Zobrist could play through his minor heel injury, but with a day off Thursday, April 16, it is an opportunity to give Zobrist two days of rest.

Fantasy Tip: Remove Zobrist ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) from your lineups Wednesday. Eric Sogard ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will man the keystone position and bat eighth in Zobrist's absence, but FantasyScore players should aim higher than Sogard Wednesday.

Athletics | Ben Zobrist sitting vs. Astros

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 13:45:07 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Ben Zobrist is not in the starting lineup against the Houston Astros Wednesday, April 15. 2B Eric Sogard is starting at second base and hitting eighth in the batting order against Astros SP Collin McHugh.

Fantasy Tip: Sogard ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) won't give you much offensive firepower at FantasyScore, especially hitting low in the lineup. He also only hit .228 with one home run in 250 at-bats against right-handers in 2014. Look elsewhere Wednesday night.

Athletics | Josh Reddick out first week

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 06:02:43 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick (oblique) will be on the disabled list for the first five games of the season with a strained oblique. 2B Ben Zobrist will begin the season in right field for the club.

Fantasy Tip: Reddick ($3,500, 7.0% of your cap) has cheap power potential if he can stay on the field and regain his stroke. Avoid him on FantasyScore, but don't forget about him completely. As for Zobrist, at $4,900 (9.8%), he's an upper echelon second baseman.

Athletics | Ben Zobrist scratched

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 16:11:40 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Ben Zobrist (shoulder) was scratched from the game Monday, March 16, with tightness under his left shoulder, according to manager Bob Melvin. Melvin said Zobrist could have played if it were the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: With Josh Reddick expected to open the season on the disabled list, Zobrist should see enough playing time in the outfield to qualify and make him more versatile to fantasy owners (he also has eligibility at second base). The switch hitter should be taken in the middle rounds of mixed leagues for his ability to deliver double-digit home runs and stolen bases, even though his less desirable pop will be hurt by O.co Coliseum.

Athletics | Ben Zobrist to play in OF

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 12:51:51 -0700

Oakland Athletics 2B Ben Zobrist will play right field Wednesday, March 11, in a spring training game.

Fantasy Tip: Zobrist has value only in the mid to late rounds of AL leagues because his bat doesn't have enough pop to it, but this could give him some position eligibility should Josh Reddick open the season on the DL.

Athletics | Rest days will be key for Ben Zobrist

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 15:33:37 -0800

Oakland Athletics 2B Ben Zobrist is expected to play primarily at second base this season. Manager Bob Melvin has discussed finding rest days for the versatile defender as the biggest challenge concerning Zobrist, because of the temptation for Melvin to plug Zobrist in at third base or the outfield to allow other starters a day off.

Fantasy Tip: Zobrist's fantasy stock receives a slight boost because of his eligibility at multiple positions and ability to stay healthy. He has averaged 562 at-bats over the past six seasons, and he is a reliable cross-category contributor. However, the counting stats are declining, and at 33, Zobrist is no longer worthy of early middle round attention in mixed leagues.
