Rays | Alex Cobb to throw BP

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 20:51:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) is scheduled to throw a batting practice session Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb continues to make his way back from Tommy John surgery. It's uncertain if he will be able to make it all the way back to the big club this season. He might be worth grabbing in fantasy leagues later in the season if he makes it all the way back.

Rays | Alex Cobb nearing rehab starts

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 12:49:58 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, June 27, and could potentially throw his final live bullpen Thursday, June 30, with rehab starts to follow.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb is worth stashing in all seasonal leagues, as he could approach 10 starts once healthy and back with the Rays. He'll be a risky option initially, but there is upside for a huge late-season boost for your pitching staff. Through his past 49 starts, Cobb has a 2.82 ERA with a 8.2 K/9. Stay tuned for updates.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) will throw his first live batting practice Saturday, June 18, in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb was believed to be back around the All-Star break. If he's available and you have a DL spot, now is a time to start thinking about stashing him.

Rays | Alex Cobb ready for next step?

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 21:51:02 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) will meet with manager Kevin Cash in the next couple of days to set up a batting practice schedule. Cobb is making his way back from reconstructive elbow surgery.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain how long Cobb will be sidelined and if he'll have any meaningful starts during the 2016 season. Avoid him in all fantasy formats until he can officially return and prove his health in at least three full starts without any setbacks.

Rays | Alex Cobb throws bullpen

Tue, 31 May 2016 16:49:08 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, May 31, and he mixed in breaking balls for the first time.

Fantasy Tip: It's good progress for Cobb trying to come back from Tommy John surgery this year. He should be available to return to the rotation after the All-Star break. Before his surgery, the right-handed posted two straight sub-2.00 ERA seasons for the Rays and remains a top-of-the-rotation starter when healthy. He's worth stashing everywhere, but temper expectations a bit for the second half of the season when he returns.

Rays | Two pitchers making slow progress

Wed, 04 May 2016 20:53:58 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SPs Alex Cobb (elbow) and Chase Whitley (elbow), each making their way back from Tommy John surgery, were able to throw fastballs off a mound Wednesday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb and Whitley might return at some point this season, but for now they can be left to the waiver wire unless you have extremely deep reserve or plenty of DL spots.

For the second time this week, Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) threw 20 fastballs from halfway up a bullpen mound Friday, April 15. Afterward, he claimed that this session went better than the previous one.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb should remain stashed in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues because there is a chance he could resume pitching before the end of the regular season.

Rays | Alex Cobb pleased with his progress

Sun, 21 Feb 2016 06:29:47 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (elbow) is pleased with his progress in his recovering from Tommy John surgery. He is currently playing long toss at 120 feet and hopes to throw off a mound by mid-March with his return goal still late July.

Fantasy Tip: Depending on your league's settings, Cobb is either a late-round grab to stash or player to watch. When healthy he is a No. 2 arm with solid strikeout upside, but he hasn't pitched since 2014 and inconsistency often accompanies Tommy John returnees early in their comebacks. All said, if you can stash Cobb in an IR spot after grabbing him late in your draft, it is advised.
