Blue Jays | Toronto could use six starters

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 17:03:52 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are entertaining the idea of temporarily using a six-man rotation, in order to limit the number of innings that SPs Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman will throw this season. SP Drew Hutchison, who is currently pitching for Class AAA Buffalo, is the most likely candidate to be used as a sixth starter, although RPs Gavin Floyd and Jesse Chavez (back) could also step into the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Toronto's starters lead the majors in innings pitched (95) and the team is in the midst of a stretch where they play 29 games in 30 days, hence the desire to add another starter. Hutchison is worthy of consideration for AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues if he gets promoted. Manager John Gibbons views Floyd as a pitcher only capable of throwing one to three innings at this point and Chavez has been battling a sore back recently, so they appear less likely to be used in starting roles.

Blue Jays | Drew Hutchison to start in minors?

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 13:29:42 -0800

Updating a previous report, Toronto Blue Jays SP Drew Hutchison appears to be on the outside looking in for the competition for the fifth starting spot, and he's likely to begin the year at Class AAA Buffalo. SPs Aaron Sanchez, Jesse Chavez, Gavin Floyd and Roberto Hernandez will be the others competing with Hutchison in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: This race likely comes down to Sanchez and Hutchison, and whoever performs better this spring could win it. Sanchez has the most upside of the group, but concerns over home-run allowance and questions about his health should temper your expectations.

Blue Jays | Jesse Chavez wins arbitration case

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 09:28:04 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays SP Jesse Chavez won his arbitration hearing Saturday, Feb. 6, and was awarded $4 million. The Blue Jays argued to give him $3.6 million.

Fantasy Tip: Chavez will have a chance to compete for Toronto's final starting rotation spot in spring training, but he may be a better fit for the bullpen. Coming off an injury that ended his 2015 season, Chavez's fantasy value remains minimal, and he'd only be worth a flier in AL-only leagues if he lands in the rotation.

Blue Jays | Drew Hutchison favorite for rotation spot

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 13:58:13 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays SP Drew Hutchison will likely receive the first crack at the final starting rotation spot as he competes with SPs Jesse Chavez and Aaron Sanchez for the spot.

Fantasy Tip: Hutchison went 13-5 but also had a 5.57 ERA in 2015 and struck out fewer hitters per nine innings than in his rookie season. That'll keep him from going until the later rounds in most fantasy drafts, but scooping him up then is surely worthwhile. He has the skills to be useful in most formats if you pick your spots wisely.

Blue Jays | Toronto lands Jesse Chavez

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 16:07:10 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired SP Jesse Chavez from the Oakland Athletics Friday, Nov. 20, in exchange for SP Liam Hendriks, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Chavez had an up-and-down season before being shelved with a rib injury in September. He went 7-15 with a 4.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 26 starts for the A's. He could be used as a swing man for the Blue Jays, and this trade hurts his fantasy value moving to one of the more hitter-friendly environments. He's a late-round flier in AL-only leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Athletics | Jesse Chavez's season over

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 15:21:18 -0700

Updating a previous report, Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez (rib) is dealing with a non-displaced rib fracture, and manager Bob Melvin said Chavez won't pitch again this season. SP Cody Martin is set to start Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Go ahead and drop Chavez anywhere that he was still owned. Martin has a 15.00 ERA in one start over three innings for the A's this year. That should be enough to warn you not to run with him in your daily lineups tomorrow.

Athletics | Jesse Chavez scratched

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 14:45:24 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez (rib) will be scratched from his start Wednesday, Sept. 16, as he's dealing with rib soreness. Chavez is having trouble breathing and could miss the rest of the year. However, X-rays were negative and he could go for an MRI exam Wednesday. SP Cody Martin could replace Chavez in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: While it's possible Chavez ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) could return to make another start this year, it's unlikely at this juncture. Dump him in any league that you still own him and don't plan on using him on FantasyScore.

Mariners | Franklin Gutierrez not starting

Sat, 05 Sep 2015 17:17:19 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez is not in the lineup Saturday, Sept. 5. OF Shawn O'Malley will bat ninth against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez.

Fantasy Tip: Batting at the bottom of the order in just his second game of the year, O'Malley can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Mariners | Nelson Cruz remains out

Sat, 05 Sep 2015 17:13:30 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz (quadriceps) is not in the lineup Saturday, Sept. 5. OF Seth Smith will bat fourth against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez.

Fantasy Tip: Smith ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) doesn't have a ton of upside, but nine of his 10 homers have come against right-handed pitchers this year. He could be worth taking a chance on at FantasyScore hitting out of the cleanup spot.

Athletics | Jesse Chavez earns win Wednesday

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 18:38:17 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez (7-12) allowed two runs on two hits over eight innings in a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday, Aug. 19, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Although Chavez ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) has been the victim of poor run support for most of the season, this was only his second quality start in his last six outings. He will make his next start against the Seattle Mariners Tuesday, Aug. 25.
