Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon worked an inning Wednesday, April 2, against the Chicago Cubs, allowing an earned run. However, it was not via the long ball. Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said RP Jason Grilli will return to the late innings when the team has a lead, meaning Grilli is close to regaining the closer's role from RP Mark Melancon. Grilli will pitch the seventh and eighth innings when the team has a lead, with Melancon remaining in the ninth, for now. Grilli has given up a run in two of his three appearances since coming back from the disabled list, and he's struck out three and walked one in 2 1/3 innings. "I do like the way that Grilli's developing," Hurdle said. "I think he's getting closer." Melancon has a save in each of his last four outings.
Fantasy Tip: Melancon has done a fantastic job filling in in the ninth with Grilli injured, but that time is coming where the Pirates are comfortable giving the closer job back to Grilli. Continue to ride Melancon if you own him.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli (forearm) said he doesn't expect to immediately return to the closer's role after being activated from the disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 3. Manager Clint Hurdle said Grilli will make a couple relief appearances in non-save situations before returning to the ninth inning. "Our eyes will tell us what to do with him after that, I believe ... his eyes and our eyes," Hurdle said. "We eventually plan on transitioning him back to the closer role."
Fantasy Tip: Mark Melancon has a little bit more time to accrue saves in the meantime. Hang onto him if you are riding him for saves.

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent RP Kyle Farnsworth (Rays) to a minor league deal Friday, Aug. 16, and assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Fantasy Tip: With Jason Grilli (foreram) sidelined, Mark Melancon has done a nice job filling in as the new closer. Farnsworth could come up to the majors and provide another late-inning setup arm, but don't expect him to see any save chances before Grilli returns.
