Pirates | Mark Melancon to remain closer

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 07:37:22 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon will remain the team's closer, with RPs Joakim Soria and Tony Watson serving as setup men.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon owners have nothing to fear as long as he continues to be successful in the closer role. He's earned plenty of rope this season, so it'd likely take a lot for the Pirates to bump him out of the role. Soria's fantasy value obviously takes a big hit. There's not much reason to hold onto him if he's not closing games.

Pirates | Mark Melancon to remain closer?

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 15:51:26 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon is expected to remain the closer, following the acquisition of RP Joakim Soria from the Detroit Tigers Thursday, July 30. Soria and RP Tony Watson will serve as a setup duo.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon owns a measly 1.32 ERA, but he also a miniscule strikeout rate of just 6.23. Still, Melancon has racked up 32 saves for the season, and he'll likely continue to receive the majority of save opportunities. Soria owners should move on once an official decision is made by the Pirates.

Pirates | Mark Melancon keeps door shut

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 17:08:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon recorded the final out Thursday, July 2, against the Detroit Tigers, to pick up his 25th save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon has allowed just a single unearned run since May 11, and he's walked just three batters in that span. Melancon has cast aside the early-season doubts, but his owners may want to sell high if they have other sources of saves.

Pirates | Mark Melancon unavailable vs. Nats

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 13:33:09 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon has pitched in three consecutive games, and he is not available against the Washington Nationals Friday, June 19.

Fantasy Tip: Tony Watson is the most likely saves candidate, and he is worth a look in deep mixed leagues for the save chasers. For the season, he has a 1.78 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, a 7.6 K/9 and a save, and those numbers can help stabilize your fake rotation. Melancon has been phenomenal, too, though. Watson isn't in line to steal save opportunities from Melancon anytime soon.

Pirates | Mark Melancon on nice run

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 15:17:44 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon has converted 16 straight save chances, and he is 18-for-19 on the season. He also has a save in nine straight games, which is one shy of a franchise record.

Fantasy Tip: After some velocity concerns and rough outings early in the year, Melancon has really put any and all uneasiness from his owners to rest of late. That doesn't mean trouble will crop up eventually, but he's safe for now in the closer role in Pittsburgh.

Pirates | Mark Melancon notches 16th save

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 16:22:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon recorded two outs in the ninth inning to register his 16th save of the season during the Pirates 5-2 win over the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, June 3.

Fantasy Tip: Over his last 18 games, Melancon has 13 saves and a 0.48 ERA with nine strikeouts. After a couple early-season hiccups and velocity concerns, his job is extremely secure now. Although it would be nice to see a few more punchouts, oodles of saves and shut-down ratios are enough to keep Melancon flirting with a ranking among the second-tier closers.

Pirates | Mark Melancon may not be available

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 11:14:53 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon's status for the game Wednesday, June 3, is being described as "wait-and-see" by manager Clint Hurdle. RP Tony Watson also will not be available against the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon has saved three of the team's last four games, including pitching on back-to-back nights the past two days. If a save situation arises today and Melancon doesn't pitch, Jared Hughes could be the option in the ninth for Hurdle. Your friendly public service announcement: Nothing new to see here. Carry on.

Pirates | Mark Melancon bounces back

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 14:20:33 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon set down the side in order to record the save over the Chicago Cubs Thursday, April 23, after blowing the save and getting hit with the loss against the Cubs Tuesday, April 21. He struck out one while throwing seven of his 10 pitches for strikes, but his ERA stands at 7.36 on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon's velocity was still down a bit Thursday, but he had better location and movement on his pitches in the save. Don't panic just yet with him, but continue to monitor the situation. Should he continue to falter, Tony Watson may be in the slight lead for save opps, but this could easily become a committee approach including Jared Hughes and Arquimedes Caminero.

Pirates | Mark Melancon not available

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 14:36:54 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon is not available to close Wednesday, April 22, but manager Clint Hurdle said Melancon will remain in the closer role for now.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon's velocity was down, and he blew the save and was hit with the loss against the Chicago Cubs last night. Sit tight if you are a Melancon owner, and don't make any rash decisions, as the Pirates are sticking with him through his struggles. Those in deep NL-only leagues searching for saves could speculate on Tony Watson or Arquimedes Caminero, in that order.

Pirates | Mark Melancon not injured

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 11:44:32 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon's velocity has been down recently, but manager Clint Hurdle said his closer is not injured.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon was charged with a blown save and loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs. He's sporting an 8.53 ERA in just 6 1/3 innings to start 2015. Don't panic just yet if you own Melancon, but NL-only owners searching for saves may want to take a look at Tony Watson or Arquimedes Caminero as speculation in case Melancon continues to stumble.
