Mariners | Seth Smith, Adam Lind out

Mon, 23 May 2016 17:39:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith and 1B Adam Lind are not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Rich Hill Monday, May 23. OF Franklin Gutierrez will start in right field and is batting second. 1B Dae-ho Lee will start at first base and is batting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez is hitting only .200 with two home runs and five RBI this month, so owners should be able to find better options to use. Lee is hitting .218 with three home runs and eight RBI against left-handed pitchers this season and can be an option for desperate owners in daily fantasy leagues.

Mariners | Seth Smith, Adam Lind resting Saturday

Sat, 21 May 2016 10:40:04 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith and 1B Adam Lind are out of the starting lineup against Cincinnati Reds SP John Lamb Saturday, May 21. 1B Dae-ho Lee will bat fifth and play first base, while OF Franklin Gutierrez will bat seventh and play left field.

Fantasy Tip: Smith and Lind are resting Saturday because the club is facing a left-handed pitcher. Lee is batting .273 with six home runs and 12 RBI in just 55 at-bats and makes an excellent source of cap relief in DFS. On the other hand, Gutierrez is just 9-for-51 (.176) at the plate this year and should be avoided this afternoon.

Mariners | Seth Smith hitting second Tuesday

Tue, 17 May 2016 12:28:38 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith is hitting second Tuesday, May 17, against Baltimore Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has hit second for two games in a row after hitting sixth last week. Smith is hitting .222 in the past week but has a .462 on-base percentage. Smith is worth sticking in your lineup because he will get more chances to either score runs or drive them in batting second. Smith may have a weak batting average and slugging percentage, but his fantasy value comes from getting on base.

Mariners | Two outfielders sitting for Seattle

Sun, 15 May 2016 12:03:38 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith and OF Leonys Martin are not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Hector Santiago Sunday, May 15. OF Franklin Gutierrez will start in right field and is batting eighth. OF Shawn O'Malley will start in center field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez is hitting .265 with one home run and five RBI against left-handed pitchers in 2016 and may be a starting candidate for desperate owners in daily fantasy leagues. O'Malley was recently called up from the minors and does not have much fantasy value.

Mariners | Ketel Marte dropped to eighth

Sat, 14 May 2016 16:08:57 -0700

Seattle Mariners SS Ketel Marte was dropped from second to eighth Saturday, May 14, with OF Seth Smith hitting second.

Fantasy Tip: Marte has held his own with a .308-1-10 line this month, but Smith has struggled with a .161 average in May. Marte loses a bit of luster with the move, but he's still a low-end option. Smith is a shaky option against Jhoulys Chacin.

Mariners | Seth Smith, Adam Lind sit vs. lefty

Tue, 10 May 2016 17:45:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith (rest) and 1B Adam Lind (rest) are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 10, against Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly.

Fantasy Tip: Once again, Smith and Lind are being rested against a southpaw. Dae-ho Lee will pick up another start filling in at first base, and could be a worthwhile dart throw for owners in daily leagues due to his power potential. Meanwhile, Nelson Cruz is taking over right field, and with Kyle Seager serving as the designated hitter, Luis Sardinas gets to start, but isn't worth using in any format.

Mariners | Adam Lind, Seth Smith sitting

Mon, 09 May 2016 16:00:04 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith (rest) and 1B Adam Lind (rest) are not in the starting lineup Monday, May 9, against Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore. OF Franklin Gutierrez is starting for Smith, batting fifth, while 1B Dae-ho Lee is in for Lind, batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: This is just standard protocol with a lefty on the hill. It's hard to recommend starting either of the replacement players, as Gutierrez is hitting just .216 on the year, while Lee has proven to be a boom-or-bust bat in the early going. The latter does have four homers in 39 at-bats, though, so he could be a decent dart throw.

Mariners | Adam Lind, Seth Smith sit

Sat, 07 May 2016 13:33:57 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Adam Lind and OF Seth Smith are out of the lineup Saturday, May 7, against a left-handed starter. 1B Dae-ho Lee is hitting eighth, and OF Franklin Gutierrez is hitting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Lee has a couple homers in seven at-bats the last week, and he's a wild-card flyer against Dallas Keuchel. Gutierrez hasn't done much yet this season, but he has a lengthy history of success against lefties. He's a basement flyer to consider.

Mariners | Seth Smith sitting out

Wed, 04 May 2016 10:58:43 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith is out of the lineup Wednesday, May 4, with OF Franklin Gutierrez hitting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez's numbers don't wow you, but he pounded 11 homers in 159 at-bats against lefties the previous three years. He's worth the low-end flyer against Sean Manaea.

Mariners | Seth Smith an on-base machine

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:52:42 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith ranked second amongst American League players through Sunday, May 1, with a .440 on-base percentage. He sits only behind Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer, who leads the league with a .459 clip.

Fantasy Tip: Smith had a very uneventful first season with the Mariners in 2015, but the nine-year veteran could have something to offer fantasy owners in all leagues if he keeps it up. Of course, it's reasonable to be skeptical if he can keep it up, but Smith has had some success before, and at the very least, has shown enough to indicate he can stick on rosters in deep leagues.
