Pirates | J.A. Happ roughed up by Cubs

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 20:14:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six hitters through 4 1/3 innings during the Pirates' 5-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) entered his debut start with the Pirates with a 4.64 EA, a 4.07 FIP, a 1.40 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9, and he has now allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last seven starts. It is unlikely Happ turns it around enough to warrant attention in the majority of seasonal leagues, and FantasyScore players should view him as an extremely risky start.

Pirates | J.A. Happ joining rotation

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 16:22:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ will join the starting rotation with A.J. Burnett (elbow) on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) should fare slightly better in the National League, but he is still nothing more than a streaming option in the majority of seasonal leagues. FantasyScore players should be extremely cautious with starting him, too. Over 20 starts this season, Happ has a 4.64 ERA, a 4.06 FIP, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9.

Mariners | Jesus Montero sent down

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 10:10:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Jesus Montero was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Monday, July 20. The team also recalled SP J.A. Happ from Class A Bakersfield.

Fantasy Tip: Montero likely will return at some point this season, but owners may want to consider dropping him in their leagues. Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) could be an option in AL-only leagues if he is available, but owners on FantasyScore may want to avoid using him against tougher opponents.

Mariners | J.A. Happ to start Monday

Fri, 17 Jul 2015 19:13:31 -0700

The Seattle Mariners will recall SP J.A. Happ from Class A Bakersfield to start against the Detroit Tigers Monday, July 20.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) was demoted to the minors after his final start before the All-Star break so that the club could add an extra bat to their bench on a temporary basis. He is 4-5 with a 4.14 ERA through 17 starts this year.

Mariners | J.A. Happ sent down

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 16:41:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ was optioned to the minors Thursday, July 9, to make room for the call-up of 1B Jesus Montero.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) will be the fifth starter coming out of the All-Star break, so if you own him in deeper leagues, sit tight. Montero was hitting .332 (113-for-340) with 15 home runs and 68 RBI for Class AAA Tacoma this year, and he could see valuable playing time at first base, designated hitter or even catcher for the M's. He's a speculative addition in AL-only leagues for now.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma's return looming

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 15:58:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will throw six innings or 90 pitches in his third rehab start for Class AAA Tacoma Tuesday, June 30. That'll line him up to come off the disabled list and start against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, July 5, but there isn't an obvious opening in the starting rotation right now. SPs Mike Montgomery or Roenis Elias could be sent back to the minors, SP J.A. Happ could move to the bullpen or the team could go to a six-man rotation. Sunday would be Montgomery's turn, but he has a 2.04 ERA in five starts since June 2. Elias has been hit hard his last two starts, raising his ERA from 2.79 to 4.35. If Elias struggles against the A's Thursday, July 2, he could be the odd-man out. Happ is 0-4 with five no-decisions in his last nine starts despite not allowing more than four runs in those games. Seattle could also delay a decision on Iwakuma by keeping him on his rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will join the rotation eventually, so you should check to see if he's available in deep mixed leagues. Iwakuma is a risky FantasyScore option Sunday if he returns to face the A's, and he could be on a pitch count in his first start back.

Mariners | J.A. Happ good against Tampa Bay

Fri, 05 Jun 2015 04:23:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 19 strikeouts in his last three starts against the Tampa Bay Rays. Happ has his next start against the Rays on Friday, June 5.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) has a 3-1 mark and 3.70 ERA overall this season, and he certainly merits a start here given his recent Rays track record.

Mariners | Welington Castillo starting Thursday

Wed, 20 May 2015 13:24:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Welington Castillo will start Thursday, May 21, and he will catch SP J.A. Happ.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) may be tested as Happ's personal catcher during this game. Castillo may get more starts, especially if Mike Zunino falters, so keep an eye on how Castillo does.

Mariners | J.A. Happ enjoys win streak

Fri, 15 May 2015 04:19:42 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ has won three straight starts and will go for a fourth Friday, May 15, against the Boston Red Sox. Happ has a 3.60 ERA during the streak, with 23 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) is on a decent stretch at the moment, and his overall numbers during this string are not bad. As long as Happ can pitch well amidst Seattle's struggles, he is a decent option for your lineup.

Mariners | J.A. Happ wins rotation spot

Sat, 04 Apr 2015 15:03:59 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ was named the team's fifth starter Saturday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($4,200, 8.4% of your cap) didn't have a happy spring with a 6.11 ERA and a .329 opponents' batting average. There is a lot to like, though, in Safeco Field. He had a 7.58 K/9 in 158 innings last season in Toronto. He could be a nice bargain on FantasyScore in good home matchups.
