Lions | Calvin Johnson rumors swirl |
Mon, 30 Oct 2017 09:45:08 -0700
Retired WR Calvin Johnson, whose rights the Detroit Lions own, has been the subject of trade calls from two teams over the past week, according to sources. Figuring they had nothing to lose, the Lions told teams to reach out to Johnson to gauge his interest, but so far it has been noncommittal at best, diminishing any hope for a deal, sources said.
Fantasy Tip: The odds appear dim that Megatron would make a return, but some sites have added him to the player pool. It's something to watch as the trade deadline approaches Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The Detroit Lions have been contacted by two teams about the possibility of trading for the rights of retired WR Calvin Johnson, according to sources. The Lions have told teams to reach out to Johnson to gauge his interest in playing again, but he has been noncommittal to this point.
Fantasy Tip: Owners should keep an eye on the situation over the next few days to see if there is any chance that Johnson is moved before the trade deadline. It appears Johnson is not interested in playing and should be avoided in all leagues.

NFL | Teams reaching out to Calvin Johnson? |
Thu, 10 Aug 2017 19:09:42 -0700
Retired Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson has been contacted by at least a half-dozen teams to gauge his interest in returning to the NFL, according to Mike Freeman of BleacherReport.com.
Fantasy Tip: Even if Johnson decides he likes a team enough to unretire, he would still need the Lions to work out a trade. A return still seems unlikely, but the situation is worth monitoring.

Raiders | Calvin Johnson linked to Raiders |
Tue, 18 Jul 2017 08:36:05 -0700
Former Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson was a guest of Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing during organized team activities earlier this summer. He also played golf with Downing, head coach Jack Del Rio and QB Derek Carr.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson disclosed recently that the Lions' futility was the main reason for retiring. He could force his release from the Lions if he came out of retirement because his old $11 million salary cap number would be reinstated and put the Lions over the threshold. It's still a long shot he returns. He turns 32 in September, and after a year away to heal, he could serve as a quality possession receiver. If so, he'd be a low-end WR3 with some PPR luster in fantasy.

Tue, 18 Jul 2017 08:30:51 -0700
Former Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson, if he decided to come out of retirement, could force the team to release him. Johnson's old salary would count against the team's cap. According to Spotrac, Johnson cleared over $11 million in salary cap space when he retired, which would put the Lions over the threshold.

Lions | Calvin Johnson invited to camp |
Mon, 17 Jul 2017 09:17:25 -0700
Retired WR Calvin Johnson was invited to training camp by the Detroit Lions team president Rod Wood told WJR Radio.
Fantasy Tip: Megatron has stated that he was physically taxed and hasn't seemed willing to return. With the Lions in contention now, there could be hope that he returns. It's a long shot, and he probably wouldn't be more than a low-end WR3 if he returned.

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 20:55:12 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he expects to lean on the running game a little more in 2016 with WR Calvin Johnson now retired. "I think it'll make us different," he said Thursday, July 28. "It's on us to make it more dangerous. We got to go out there and make the plays."
Fantasy Tip: It's tough to gauge how Stafford will perform without Johnson leading the passing attack, but he should still be viewed as a high-end QB2.

Retired WR Calvin Johnson (Lions) said Saturday, June 25, he feels good about his decision to retire and is not coming back to the NFL.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson's decision to retire should make Golden Tate a WR2 candidate, and Eric Ebron becomes an attractive upside option at tight end.

Lions | Detroit offense tougher for defenses? |
Tue, 21 Jun 2016 17:50:14 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford believes his offense will be tougher to defend without former WR Calvin Johnson. Stafford said defenses won't know who the Lions will go to on offense, whereas most of the time in previous years Johnson was their go-to guy.
Fantasy Tip: Golden Tate takes over as the No. 1 wide receiver in Detroit, and he's a WR2 candidate in 2016. Marvin Jones figures to be the No. 2 receiver, but he shouldn't be viewed as more than a WR4 with WR3 upside.

Lions | Detroit not expecting Calvin Johnson back |
Mon, 09 May 2016 10:18:19 -0700
Retired WR Calvin Johnson is not expected to return to the Detroit Lions and play in 2016, according to general manager Bob Quinn. Quinn said he has not thought about a possible return for Johnson because of the conservations the two had before Johnson made the decision.
Fantasy Tip: Golden Tate should be the team's top receiver in 2016 with Johnson retired. He recorded 813 yards and six touchdowns in 2015 and should be a middle-round option in fantasy drafts. Marvin Jones and Eric Ebron should also have solid roles in the passing game and could be middle- to late-round options in leagues.

Lions | Calvin Johnson was wearing down |
Sat, 26 Mar 2016 17:13:31 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he knew the NFL was "wearing on" retired WR Calvin Johnson. "Not to say that I expected it, but I wasn't shocked," Stafford said Friday, March 25. "I've known Calvin for seven years and know the effort and the attitude that he plays with, and it takes a toll on people. And he was catching quite a few passes and getting hit quite a bunch, and so it takes a toll."
Fantasy Tip: With Johnson out of the mix, Golden Tate is a low-end WR2 candidate, and Marvin Jones sneak into WR3 territory.

Lions | Calvin Johnson is done |
Tue, 08 Mar 2016 08:09:05 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson filed his retirement papers Tuesday, March 8, and has officially retired from the NFL.
Fantasy Tip: Megatron was one of the greatest receivers in NFL history and showed his freakish talent from the moment he stepped foot onto the field. The Lions will likely need to enter the free-agent market or draft a receiver to line up opposite of Golden Tate. Tate has had two big fantasy years in a row, but there are questions as to whether he can be as productive as a surefire WR1 with Megatron no longer there. Tate remains an WR2 in fantasy, but he would really benefit from another legit target on the field. TE Eric Ebron took a step forward in 2015 with 47 catches for 537 yards and five touchdowns. Entering his third year, he could capitalize on a position that has a distinct gap after the top few tight ends. Ebron could be the next one to enter the fray of the upper echelon. He'll be in the midrange TE1 mix in fantasy drafts.

Lions | Calvin Johnson decision before the draft? |
Mon, 29 Feb 2016 09:25:10 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson hasn't spoken publicly about his decision on whether to retire this offseason, but one person who has spoken with him in recent weeks said he expects Johnson to make a decision sometime before the NFL Draft in April. Free agency starts March 9, and the Lions would like a decision before then.
Fantasy Tip: Injuries have slowed Megatron the last two years to the point that he disappointed as a starting fantasy wideout in 2015. If he returns, he's no longer a lock for a first-round selection, and he's much safer as a WR2.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson had no deadline placed by the team on his decision to retire this offseason. General manager Bob Quinn confirmed he has spoken with Johnson but wouldn't go into details. Johnson could have to restructure or sign a new contract if he returns in 2016.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson would be a solid WR2 if he decides to return in 2016.

Lions | Calvin Johnson still undecided |
Thu, 18 Feb 2016 09:27:40 -0800
The Detroit Lions continue to wait on WR Calvin Johnson as he contemplates retirement. President Rod Wood said that he doesn't have a sense of what Johnson plans on doing, and there is no definitive timetable for a decision. The start of the new league year isn't really a deadline because they want to give Johnson all the time he needs. Johnson carries a $24 million salary cap hit in 2016.
Fantasy Tip: Popular belief seems to lean toward Megatron calling it a career. His last few seasons have been marred by nagging injuries that have dragged his production down. If he does return for another year, he's no longer elite first-round receiver material, but he could be worthy of a WR1 selection if he can stay healthy.

Lions | Calvin Johnson's body not holding up |
Wed, 10 Feb 2016 10:56:18 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson's body and injuries are the main reason he is contemplating retirement, according to WR teammate Golden Tate. "But his body just isn't holding up. With his body type, and how he plays the game, he plays at a high level all the time for a bunch of years," Tate said. Johnson needed weekly knee drains in 2013 in order to play, and he missed three games and was used as a decoy in two other games with a high ankle sprain in 2014. Johnson also battled ankle injuries this year.
Fantasy Tip: Injuries in recent seasons have taken a large toll on Megatron and his production for fantasy owners. He was a big disappointment this year because of it. If he does return in 2016, which is looking unlikely, he's no longer a lock for a first-round pick, and he should be seen as more of a low-end No. 1 wideout.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson's (ankles) longevity and condition of his ankles was a concern for doctors, and the team told prospective coaches they were interviewing about it in 2014.

Lions | Detroit wants Calvin Johnson to return |
Mon, 01 Feb 2016 14:18:53 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson may be offered an extension by the Lions in an effort by Detroit to bring their star wide receiver back. It was reported earlier that Johnson made the Lions aware of his intentions to retire following the 2015 season.
Fantasy Tip: Right now it doesn't look like Johnson will be in Detroit next season, but anything can happen between now and when the season starts. If Johnson's retirement is final, then Golden Tate would certainly have increased fantasy value, and the Lions would likely look to add depth to the position through free agency or the draft.

Lions | Calvin Johnson plans to retire |
Sun, 31 Jan 2016 14:29:39 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson told head coach Jim Caldwell after the regular season that he plans to retire, according to sources. Caldwell has told Johnson to take his time with his decision, and the Lions are hoping that Johnson will change his mind this offseason.
Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Johnson changes his mind or if he will officially retire. Johnson would still be a solid fantasy option if he plays. Golden Tate could see a boost in value if Johnson retires since he would become the No. 1 receiver on the team.

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 11:59:04 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson does not have a timetable on a decision to retire or not, according to Johnson's agent.
Fantasy Tip: This will be one of the biggest stories heading into the offseason. If Johnson does retire, the Lions could focus their draft attention on wide receiver, while Golden Tate would become their No. 1 wide receiver. Stay tuned.

Lions | Matthew Stafford talks Megatron |
Thu, 14 Jan 2016 10:15:12 -0800
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford believes WR Calvin Johnson is seriously considering retirement this offseason. "I think, anytime Calvin says something, it's not for show, it's something serious," Stafford said. "I think you guys have covered him long enough to know that he's a pretty measured person, and everything that he says to the public is a thought-out thing. So in that regard, I'm sure it's thought-out."
Fantasy Tip: Johnson had a down year by his standards, and nagging injuries have really taken a toll on his body and production in recent seasons. If he does return for another year, you shouldn't consider him among the elite receivers worthy of a first-round pick.

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said Monday, Jan. 11, that when the time is right he will reach out to WR Calvin Johnson about his future plans. He said a couple of weeks after the season isn't that time.
Fantasy Tip: Megatron has hinted that he is ready to go the Barry Sanders route and retire at or near the top of his game. It appears this will be a story to watch into the spring, and perhaps summer, as Johnson ponders his future.

Lions | Calvin Johnson considering retirement? |
Wed, 06 Jan 2016 11:19:05 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson spent as much time in the training room as anyone this year, and his ankle injury forced him to miss large chunks of practice time for a second straight season. As a result, Johnson is contemplating his future and has mentioned the subject of retirement to at least one former teammate. Several people that know Johnson said it's not far-fetched. Johnson's production has declined in recent seasons due to injuries. He missed two games with knee and finger injuries in 2013, missed three games and parts of two others last year and missed Week 8 this season with a sprained ankle and played through the injury for much of the second half. He still managed to catch 88 passes for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015 and led the Lions in yards and touchdowns. Johnson is scheduled to make $16 million next year and has a cap number of $24.008 million. Detroit could ask him to take a pay cut or outright release him to save $11 million in cap space.
Fantasy Tip: Despite eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the sixth straight season and scoring six touchdowns in the final eight games, Megatron's 2015 season was still a bit of a disappointment for his fantasy owners. He only caught double-digit passes in two games, with one coming in a meaningless Week 17. He was held to one catch in back-to-back weeks and was very inconsistent. If Johnson does come back for another year, he shouldn't be looked at as a lock as one of the top-tier elite receivers anymore.

Lions | Megatron finishes season strong |
Sun, 03 Jan 2016 19:57:30 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) posted 10 receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears. He was targeted 15 times.
Fantasy Tip: Megatron did not show any ill-effects of the ankle injury which had him listed as questionable for the finale. The 100-yard game was just his second of the season for fantasy owners, who were mostly disappointed in him despite a total of nine touchdowns and another 1,000-yard season.

Lions | Calvin Johnson to face Chicago |
Sun, 03 Jan 2016 08:41:08 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is active for Week 17's game against the Chicago Bears.
Fantasy Tip: For the first time since 2012, Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been active for all 16 regular-season games. He has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury for several weeks but has been able to play through the pain and should be considered a low-end WR1 in FantasyScore this week.

Lions | Calvin Johnson not anticipating surgery |
Fri, 01 Jan 2016 18:38:10 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) said he plans to play in Week 17 against the Chicago Bears and doesn't expect to need surgery on his ankle in the offseason.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has dealt with a nagging ankle injury for weeks, and it has likely contributed to his inconsistent play. However, he caught six passes for 166 yards and a score against Chicago earlier this year, so he offers plenty of upside at FantasyScore if he indeed suits up.

Lions | Calvin Johnson questionable |
Fri, 01 Jan 2016 14:11:59 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 1, and is listed as questionable for the Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been dealing with this injury for the last several weeks but has been able to play, so owners should check the inactive list before deciding on their roster. He should be a focal point in the team's passing game if he is active and could be a decent fantasy option in most leagues.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, Dec. 31.

Lions | Detroit players won't be rested |
Wed, 30 Dec 2015 15:03:09 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) and the rest of the Lions will not be rested in Week 17, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell said if the players are healthy enough to play, then they'll play.
Fantasy Tip: The biggest question mark for the Lions this week is Johnson, who did not practice because of an ankle injury. Really all the Lions have to play for this week is pride, but apparently that's enough to keep the starters from being sidelined. Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) and Golden Tate ($5,800, 11.6%) have a tough draw against the Chicago Bears, who have been better than average against the position this year.

Lions | Calvin Johnson doesn't practice |
Wed, 30 Dec 2015 13:10:50 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 30.
Fantasy Tip: Head coach Jim Caldwell has already said that Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) will play if he's healthy enough. The Lions have nothing to play for, though, so Johnson may sit out or could be limited if he does play. The matchup against the Chicago Bears isn't the best for his position, either, so there is some risk in starting Johnson this week.

Lions | Calvin Johnson to play if healthy |
Wed, 30 Dec 2015 09:37:52 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) will play if he's healthy enough to suit up in Week 17 against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Johnson sat out the regular season finale in 2013 when the Lions had nothing to play for.
Fantasy Tip: Despite going over 1,000 yards on the season, Megatron ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has had a disappointing season by his standards, and his health hasn't helped his cause. He bounced back last week, though, and his matchup with the Bears is a really nice one. However, we wouldn't blame you if you weren't up for paying his high FantasyScore price.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson finished with six catches for 77 yards and a touchdown in a 32-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson managed just two catches for 35 yards in his previous two games combined, but he got back on track against the 49ers. He hasn't been an elite fantasy option this year, but he has been a quality WR2 at FantasyScore most weeks.

Lions | Calvin Johnson active Sunday |
Sun, 27 Dec 2015 08:46:09 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is active for Week 16's game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) was listed as questionable on the injury report and had been limited in practice throughout the week. Although he has just two receptions for 35 yards over the past two games, he has a rather favorable matchup versus the San Francisco secondary and remains worthy of consideration for FantasyScore lineups.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 25, and is listed as questionable for the Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been dealing with the injury for a few weeks but he should be able to play this week. He has been pretty quiet over the last three weeks but could still be a solid option because of the favorable matchup.

Lions | Pay cut for Calvin Johnson? |
Thu, 24 Dec 2015 18:22:29 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson was noncommittal when asked if he would take a pay cut after the season to stay with the team. "We'll consider those things when or if they happen," Johnson said.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) contract is massive, and while he hasn't been bad this year, he hasn't been the dominant force that he has been in recent years either. If he ends up back with Detroit in 2016, he should still be a solid WR2.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited Thursday |
Thu, 24 Dec 2015 14:40:37 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 24.
Fantasy Tip: Those who own Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) are in somewhat of a predicament heading into championship week. He only has two catches for 35 yards in his last two games combined. The matchup against the San Francisco 49ers is decent, but if you can afford to, benching Johnson this week may not be a bad choice.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited in practice |
Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:26:22 -0800
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 23.
Fantasy Tip: Riding a miserable two-game stretch with just two catches, Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is a polarizing player for Week 16. In seasonal leagues, it will likely be extremely difficult to bench him, unless you have another strong option. Stay tuned for updates throughout the week, but Johnson being deployed as a decoy again isn't out of the question.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) managed just one reception for 19 yards in the Week 15 game against the New Orleans Saints. He was targeted just once in the win.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson's ankle is obviously hurting him more than he or the team is letting on. If Megatron was healthy, there is no way he doesn't tear up this awful New Orleans pass defense.
