Lions | Calvin Johnson and GM could meet

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 20:47:17 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is staying in touch with team president Rod Wood, and Wood said he hopes to introduce Johnson to general manager Bob Quinn sometime next week.

Fantasy Tip: If the Lions can convince Johnson to return in 2016, he should have no problem providing solid WR2 production.

Lions | Calvin Johnson's longevity was in question

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 06:25:59 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson's (ankles) longevity and condition of his ankles was a concern for doctors, and the team told prospective coaches they were interviewing about it in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: If Megatron decides to return, he'll be a high-end WR2 in fantasy.

Lions | Detroit wants Calvin Johnson to return

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 14:18:53 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson may be offered an extension by the Lions in an effort by Detroit to bring their star wide receiver back. It was reported earlier that Johnson made the Lions aware of his intentions to retire following the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: Right now it doesn't look like Johnson will be in Detroit next season, but anything can happen between now and when the season starts. If Johnson's retirement is final, then Golden Tate would certainly have increased fantasy value, and the Lions would likely look to add depth to the position through free agency or the draft.

Lions | Calvin Johnson plans to retire

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 14:29:39 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson told head coach Jim Caldwell after the regular season that he plans to retire, according to sources. Caldwell has told Johnson to take his time with his decision, and the Lions are hoping that Johnson will change his mind this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Johnson changes his mind or if he will officially retire. Johnson would still be a solid fantasy option if he plays. Golden Tate could see a boost in value if Johnson retires since he would become the No. 1 receiver on the team.

Lions | No timetable for Calvin Johnson decision

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 11:59:04 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson does not have a timetable on a decision to retire or not, according to Johnson's agent.

Fantasy Tip: This will be one of the biggest stories heading into the offseason. If Johnson does retire, the Lions could focus their draft attention on wide receiver, while Golden Tate would become their No. 1 wide receiver. Stay tuned.

Lions | Matthew Stafford talks Megatron

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 10:15:12 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford believes WR Calvin Johnson is seriously considering retirement this offseason. "I think, anytime Calvin says something, it's not for show, it's something serious," Stafford said. "I think you guys have covered him long enough to know that he's a pretty measured person, and everything that he says to the public is a thought-out thing. So in that regard, I'm sure it's thought-out."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson had a down year by his standards, and nagging injuries have really taken a toll on his body and production in recent seasons. If he does return for another year, you shouldn't consider him among the elite receivers worthy of a first-round pick.

Lions | Calvin Johnson will be given time

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 21:33:19 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said Monday, Jan. 11, that when the time is right he will reach out to WR Calvin Johnson about his future plans. He said a couple of weeks after the season isn't that time.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron has hinted that he is ready to go the Barry Sanders route and retire at or near the top of his game. It appears this will be a story to watch into the spring, and perhaps summer, as Johnson ponders his future.

Lions | Megatron told mother he may retire

Thu, 07 Jan 2016 05:32:19 -0800

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson told his mother he wasn't sure he wanted to play anymore, and he cleaned out his locker unlike other veterans.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron has had a stellar career with little to hang his hat on the mantle in Detroit. If he returns, he's a solid WR2, but age and attrition is starting to catch up.

Lions | Calvin Johnson considering retirement?

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 11:19:05 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson spent as much time in the training room as anyone this year, and his ankle injury forced him to miss large chunks of practice time for a second straight season. As a result, Johnson is contemplating his future and has mentioned the subject of retirement to at least one former teammate. Several people that know Johnson said it's not far-fetched.

Johnson's production has declined in recent seasons due to injuries. He missed two games with knee and finger injuries in 2013, missed three games and parts of two others last year and missed Week 8 this season with a sprained ankle and played through the injury for much of the second half. He still managed to catch 88 passes for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015 and led the Lions in yards and touchdowns. Johnson is scheduled to make $16 million next year and has a cap number of $24.008 million. Detroit could ask him to take a pay cut or outright release him to save $11 million in cap space.

Fantasy Tip: Despite eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the sixth straight season and scoring six touchdowns in the final eight games, Megatron's 2015 season was still a bit of a disappointment for his fantasy owners. He only caught double-digit passes in two games, with one coming in a meaningless Week 17. He was held to one catch in back-to-back weeks and was very inconsistent. If Johnson does come back for another year, he shouldn't be looked at as a lock as one of the top-tier elite receivers anymore.

Lions | Megatron finishes season strong

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 19:57:30 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) posted 10 receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears. He was targeted 15 times.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron did not show any ill-effects of the ankle injury which had him listed as questionable for the finale. The 100-yard game was just his second of the season for fantasy owners, who were mostly disappointed in him despite a total of nine touchdowns and another 1,000-yard season.

Lions | Calvin Johnson to face Chicago

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 08:41:08 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is active for Week 17's game against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: For the first time since 2012, Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been active for all 16 regular-season games. He has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury for several weeks but has been able to play through the pain and should be considered a low-end WR1 in FantasyScore this week.

Lions | Calvin Johnson not anticipating surgery

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 18:38:10 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) said he plans to play in Week 17 against the Chicago Bears and doesn't expect to need surgery on his ankle in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has dealt with a nagging ankle injury for weeks, and it has likely contributed to his inconsistent play. However, he caught six passes for 166 yards and a score against Chicago earlier this year, so he offers plenty of upside at FantasyScore if he indeed suits up.

Lions | Calvin Johnson questionable

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 14:11:59 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 1, and is listed as questionable for the Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been dealing with this injury for the last several weeks but has been able to play, so owners should check the inactive list before deciding on their roster. He should be a focal point in the team's passing game if he is active and could be a decent fantasy option in most leagues.

Lions | Calvin Johnson practices

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 10:15:53 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, Dec. 31.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) had 19.7 points on FantasyScore last week and is a low-end WR1 consideration against the Chicago Bears.

Lions | Detroit players won't be rested

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 15:03:09 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) and the rest of the Lions will not be rested in Week 17, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell said if the players are healthy enough to play, then they'll play.

Fantasy Tip: The biggest question mark for the Lions this week is Johnson, who did not practice because of an ankle injury. Really all the Lions have to play for this week is pride, but apparently that's enough to keep the starters from being sidelined. Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) and Golden Tate ($5,800, 11.6%) have a tough draw against the Chicago Bears, who have been better than average against the position this year.

Lions | Calvin Johnson doesn't practice

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 13:10:50 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Head coach Jim Caldwell has already said that Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) will play if he's healthy enough. The Lions have nothing to play for, though, so Johnson may sit out or could be limited if he does play. The matchup against the Chicago Bears isn't the best for his position, either, so there is some risk in starting Johnson this week.

Lions | Calvin Johnson to play if healthy

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 09:37:52 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) will play if he's healthy enough to suit up in Week 17 against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Johnson sat out the regular season finale in 2013 when the Lions had nothing to play for.

Fantasy Tip: Despite going over 1,000 yards on the season, Megatron ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has had a disappointing season by his standards, and his health hasn't helped his cause. He bounced back last week, though, and his matchup with the Bears is a really nice one. However, we wouldn't blame you if you weren't up for paying his high FantasyScore price.

Lions | Calvin Johnson bounces back

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 17:32:54 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson finished with six catches for 77 yards and a touchdown in a 32-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson managed just two catches for 35 yards in his previous two games combined, but he got back on track against the 49ers. He hasn't been an elite fantasy option this year, but he has been a quality WR2 at FantasyScore most weeks.

Lions | Calvin Johnson active Sunday

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 08:46:09 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is active for Week 16's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) was listed as questionable on the injury report and had been limited in practice throughout the week. Although he has just two receptions for 35 yards over the past two games, he has a rather favorable matchup versus the San Francisco secondary and remains worthy of consideration for FantasyScore lineups.

Lions | Calvin Johnson questionable

Fri, 25 Dec 2015 17:52:28 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 25, and is listed as questionable for the Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been dealing with the injury for a few weeks but he should be able to play this week. He has been pretty quiet over the last three weeks but could still be a solid option because of the favorable matchup.

Lions | Pay cut for Calvin Johnson?

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 18:22:29 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson was noncommittal when asked if he would take a pay cut after the season to stay with the team. "We'll consider those things when or if they happen," Johnson said.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) contract is massive, and while he hasn't been bad this year, he hasn't been the dominant force that he has been in recent years either. If he ends up back with Detroit in 2016, he should still be a solid WR2.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited Thursday

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 14:40:37 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Those who own Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) are in somewhat of a predicament heading into championship week. He only has two catches for 35 yards in his last two games combined. The matchup against the San Francisco 49ers is decent, but if you can afford to, benching Johnson this week may not be a bad choice.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited in practice

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:26:22 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Riding a miserable two-game stretch with just two catches, Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is a polarizing player for Week 16. In seasonal leagues, it will likely be extremely difficult to bench him, unless you have another strong option. Stay tuned for updates throughout the week, but Johnson being deployed as a decoy again isn't out of the question.

Lions | Calvin Johnson disappears again

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 22:48:20 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) managed just one reception for 19 yards in the Week 15 game against the New Orleans Saints. He was targeted just once in the win.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's ankle is obviously hurting him more than he or the team is letting on. If Megatron was healthy, there is no way he doesn't tear up this awful New Orleans pass defense.

Lions | Calvin Johnson will play in Week 15

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 16:05:18 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is officially active for the Week 15 game against the New Orleans Saints Monday, Dec. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) was limited during practice leading up to this game but should see his normal amount of targets. Johnson will have a favorable matchup since the Saints have problems stopping opposing wide receivers. Owners in all leagues should start Johnson with confidence.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was out of practice Saturday, Dec. 19, and he's questionable for Week 15 Monday, Dec. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) is expected to play and has a decent matchup against the New Orleans Saints. He's a WR1 option on FantasyScore.

Lions | Calvin Johnson not practicing

Sat, 19 Dec 2015 08:35:56 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is not participating in practice Saturday, Dec. 19, but is still expected to play against the New Orleans Saints in Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should look for updates on Johnson's ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) status over the next few days to see if he is in danger of missing the game. Johnson has a favorable matchup this week and should be a starting option if he is active.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 15:53:46 -0800

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) should be able to play against the New Orleans Saints this week, but owners will need to check on his status Saturday, Dec. 19, to see if he suffers any setbacks. He should have a favorable matchup in Week 15 and will be a solid starting option in most leagues.

Lions | Calvin Johnson returns to practice

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 11:20:00 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was back at practice Friday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) has been a disappointment this year and is no longer a must-start every week in fantasy. This week, though, he should be worth the price against the New Orleans Saints Monday night. The Saints D may be improving, but they're still highly vulnerable, and Johnson should be able to exploit them.

Lions | Calvin Johnson wants to stay in Detroit

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:46:53 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson said he would like to retire a Lion, and he said that he isn't thinking about his future right now. "I'll think about it more when the time comes," Johnson said. "If that time comes, whatever happens, happens. But not now. We still have our same coaches and we're going to continue moving forward and all I can worry about right now is the game plan that we have."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) numbers have slowly been declining, and the Lions could save $11 million in cap space by cutting him. He is far from washed up, but Johnson could be more of a solid WR2 moving forward than the WR1 as he has been for much of his career.

Lions | Calvin Johnson sits Thursday

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 09:45:00 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is out of practice Thursday, Dec. 17, but says he's healthy and will play Monday, Dec. 21, against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) has a midrange matchup against the Saints, but he hasn't done a lot since his Thanksgiving Day binge. He's a suspect WR1 on FantasyScore.

Lions | Calvin Johnson nearly shut out

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 18:23:58 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson did not have his first catch in Week 14 against the St. Louis Rams until 2:25 of the fourth quarter. When asked why Megatron had just one grab, head coach Jim Caldwell said the ball gets spread around and that every game is different.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners in yearly formats likely are bowing out of the playoffs thanks to Johnson's stinker. For daily fantasy purposes, he was obviously a huge albatross around owners' necks as well. He should bounce back nicely in Week 15 against a terrible New Orleans Saints pass defense on Monday night.

Lions | Calvin Johnson active versus St. Louis

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 08:50:59 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is active for Week 14's game against the St. Louis Rams.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) was listed as questionable on the team's injury report and had been expected to play all along, despite missing practice Friday, Dec. 11. The Rams' defense has struggled recently and Megatron should be viewed as a WR1 in all fantasy formats. With 35 receiving yards today, he will reach the 1,000-yard mark for the sixth consecutive season and the seventh time in his nine-year career.

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 14:22:38 -0800

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is officially listed as questionable for the Week 14 game against the St. Louis Rams.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is expected to play in the game, but owners should still check the inactive list before the game. Johnson will be facing a decent St. Louis defense but should still be a starting option for owners.

Lions | Calvin Johnson expected to play

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 13:13:39 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) did not practice Friday, Dec. 11, but he is still expected to play in Week 14 against the St. Louis Rams.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been just fine of late as the Detroit players buy into Jim Bob Cooter's new offense. The Rams have been fading on defense, as well, so this should be another fine performance for Johnson.

Lions | Calvin Johnson, Lance Moore limited

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 15:35:11 -0800

Detroit Lions WRs Calvin Johnson (ankle) and Lance Moore (ankle) were both limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Both Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) and Moore ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) should be fine against the St. Louis Rams. The Rams are fading on defense down the stretch, so Megatron should once again be a pretty safe pick at a high daily salary. Moore has only two catches the last two games, so he's probably not on anyone's radar right now.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 16:55:59 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Fantasy Tip: The Lions probably were taking things slow with Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) Wednesday, but he should have a good chance to play against the St. Louis Rams in Week 14. Johnson will be facing a solid Rams defense but should still be a solid starting option for owners.

Lions | Calvin Johnson active Thursday

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 16:07:24 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is active Thursday, Dec. 3, against the Green Bay Packers.

Fantasy Tip: It shouldn't be a big surprise that Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is playing after being limited in practice this week. He's got a decent matchup with the Green Bay Packers tonight and should be considered a borderline WR1.

Lions | Calvin Johnson likes new offense

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 09:39:48 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson has 80-plus receiving yards in each of the last six games under new offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) had six catches for 81 yards in the first matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Although he was limited in practice with an injury all week, he's expected to suit up for Thursday Night Football, and he'll be a solid pick on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is coming off of a three-TD performance and has a decent matchup against the Green Bay Packers. He's a low-end WR1 on FantasyScore.

Lions | Calvin Johnson questionable for Week 13

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 14:30:44 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his questionable tag, it would still be a surprise if Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) doesn't play tomorrow night. He's worth a start if he does play; he's had more than his fair share of success against the Green Bay Packers over the span of his career, including a six-catch, 81-yard performance earlier this year.

Lions | Calvin Johnson should play

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 16:41:09 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) did not practice Tuesday, Dec. 1, but he was just resting his sore ankle and should play Thursday, Dec. 3, against the Green Bay Packers.

Fantasy Tip: This is business as usual for Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap), who is no stranger to resting because of injuries. He and the Lions have a tougher matchup against the Packers this week, but he should still be considered a WR1 on FantasyScore.

Lions | Calvin Johnson sits Tuesday

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 08:33:03 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is out of practice Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably just a maintenance day after Megatron caught three touchdowns on Thanksgiving Day. Johnson ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) will be a low-end WR1 option against the Green Bay Packers in Week 13 Thursday.

Lions | Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate limited

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 13:59:42 -0800

Detroit Lions WRs Calvin Johnson (ankle) and Golden Tate (calf) were limited in practice Monday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson being limited in practice is like snow being white, so this shouldn't be a big surprise. Johnson and Tate should both be monitored leading up to Thursday night's game, of course. Unfortunately, they have a tough matchup against the Green Bay Packers, who have been one of the better fantasy defenses against wide receivers this year.

Lions | Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson go off

Thu, 26 Nov 2015 14:49:22 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson had a hay day Thursday, Nov. 26, against the Philadelphia Eagles. Stafford threw for 337 yards and five touchdowns, while Johnson caught eight passes for 93 yards and three touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford and Johnson had their best outing of the year combined in a rout of the Eagles on Thanksgiving. The Lions have really struggled in 2015, but they really rewarded fantasy owners who stuck with them this week. This may turn out to be their best combined game of the season, but it could be a positive sign of things to come.

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is officially listed as questionable for Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Nov. 26. However, Johnson is expected to be available to play against the Eagles.

Fantasy Tip: The Eagles secondary has been pretty awful all season, especially of late. Matthew Stafford should have no problem connecting with Johnson ($7,100, 14.2% of cap) for what could easily be the receiver's best game of the year. Pay up for Megatron on Thanksgiving.

Lions | Calvin Johnson limited again

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 14:36:51 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was limited for the second straight day Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,100, 14.2% of cap) is expected to be fine on a short week in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are the best matchup for receivers in PPR leagues like FantasyScore, so using Johnson in your daily lineups this week is certainly recommended.

Lions | Two Lions limited Monday

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 13:13:30 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) and TE Eric Ebron (quadriceps, hand) were limited in practice Monday, Nov. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson tends to be limited every week, but he still ends up playing. Still, an eye should be kept on both Johnson and Ebron as they're both dealing with a short week. Johnson has a great matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, but, for Ebron, Philly has only allowed two touchdowns to tight ends in 10 games this season.
