Washington Nationals RP Tyler Clippard is now incorporating his splitter into the mix more often after unveiling it for the first time last fall. However, he only uses it as a complement to his fastball-changeup combination, throwing it once every 20 pitches or so. "It's a normal part of my repertoire at this point," Clippard said. "I mean, I still have to find the right spots to throw it. I'm not going to be just fastball-split. It's definitely my third or fourth pitch. But it's something that I'm going to use consistently." Clippard grips the ball wider than the seams and otherwise throws it the same as he would his fastball. However, it's less maintenance than his curveball.
Fantasy Tip: Clippard remains a fine fantasy baseball commodity for his peripherals once he can get on track this year, even if he isn't closing. Rafael Soriano is the team's ninth-inning man, and Drew Storen is still in his way, too, so it'll once again take a few injuries before he's likely back in a closing role, however.

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams said RP Tyler Clippard will be the team's eighth-inning setup man.
Fantasy Tip: This comes as no surprise, as Clippard will be handing the ball off to Rafael Soriano in the ninth. As Soriano ages, though, his velocity continues to tumble, as does his dominance. Clippard is a solid handcuff option should Soriano struggled this season.

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano struggled in his appearance Monday, March 10, allowing five runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in one inning. He has given up seven runs on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings this spring. His body language on Monday didn't look upbeat, and a scout said his fastball sat between 89 and 91 mph, which was close to his average from 2013. Manager Matt Williams isn't concerned.
Fantasy Tip: However, since these are tendencies Soriano displayed at times last season, fantasy owners should pay attention. His K/9 drop pointed to potential problems in the future. If he can't turn things around when regulation play starts, we could see more doses of Tyler Clippard and/or Drew Storen in save spots. Plan accordingly in your draft and be careful not to overpay for Soriano.
