Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler still the closer

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 16:17:10 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler remains the team's closer after Arizona signed RP Tyler Clippard, according to general manager Dave Stewart.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler earned the role of closer after shutting down 30 games in 2015. However, he doesn't have typical closer stuff (4.8 strikeouts per nine), and any early season falter could throw Clippard or Daniel Hudson into the job. Clippard is the better speculative pick in deep mixed or NL-only leagues, as he has 53 career saves himself.

Diamondbacks | Tyler Clippard joining D-backs

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 12:42:15 -0800

The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed with free-agent RP Tyler Clippard (Mets) on a two-year, $12.25 million deal Monday, Feb. 8. He'll receive a $4 million signing bonus, $4.1 million in 2016 and $4.15 million in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: Brad Ziegler will enter as Arizona's ninth-inning reliever after taking over the role last year. But his skills aren't typical for a power reliever closing out games, and if he falters, Clippard or Daniel Hudson could be in line to steal the job.

Diamondbacks | Tyler Clippard coming to Arizona?

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 11:41:03 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart said the team is hopeful of getting a deal done to add free-agent RP Tyler Clippard (Mets).

Fantasy Tip: Brad Ziegler already opens the season on shaky ground as Arizona's closer despite ending the season in the role. He has skills atypical for a ninth-inning reliever. If Clippard joins the back end of the bullpen, he'd be a dark horse candidate to watch to usurp the role if Ziegler falters early in the year.

Diamondbacks | Tyler Clippard an option for D-Backs?

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 11:28:42 -0800

Free-agent RP Tyler Clippard (Mets) could become an option for the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to general manager Dave Stewart.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard slumped down the stretch last season, but he's still a solid fantasy reliever for ratios.

Marlins | Miami not interested in Tyler Clippard

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 14:45:57 -0800

The Miami Marlins have not shown any interest in free-agent RP Tyler Clippard (Mets).

Fantasy Tip: Clippard was moved to a setup role after being acquired by the New York Mets last year, where he had just two saves. Most teams have their closer picture cleared up right now, so he's unlikely to have much fantasy fantasy value, but stay tuned.

Mets | Jeurys Familia, Tyler Clippard unavailable

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 16:06:21 -0700

New York Mets RPs Jeurys Familia and Tyler Clippard are unavailable against the Atlanta Braves Thursday, Sept. 10, because of heavy usage this week. RP Addison Reed could be used in a save situation Thursday as a result.

Fantasy Tip: There's not much to see here. Don't freak out if you own Familia and he isn't in there tonight if a save situation arises. He recorded the save in each of the last three nights in the series sweep of the Washington Nationals, throwing a combined three innings and fanning five.

Mets | Tyler Clippard to work as setup man

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 17:44:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets RP Tyler Clippard is expected to work as a setup man for CL Jeurys Familia, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard was acquired from the Oakland Athletics Monday, but he is not expected to close in Queens like he was previously doing in Oakland. His fantasy value in standard leagues takes a hit as a result, although he is a solid addition in NL-only rotisserie formats for help in the ERA and WHIP categories. He can also be a boon to fantasy owners in leagues which offer holds as a category.

Mets | Jeurys Familia sticking as closer

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:51:12 -0700

New York Mets RP Jeurys Familia will remain as the team's closer after the acquisition of RP Tyler Clippard from the Oakland Athletics Monday, July 27, according to a source. Clippard will serve as the setup man.

Fantasy Tip: Despite blowing his first two save chances in the second half, Familia still owns a 1.70 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 27 saves this year, so he's earned plenty of rope in the Mets bullpen. Clippard obviously will lose significant value with this move, but he still has value to his owners in deeper leagues in a setup role, and he could see the occasional save chance, especially if Familia continues to struggle in the second half.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard traded away

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:26:02 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard was traded to the New York Mets Monday, July 27, in exchange for P Casey Meisner.

Fantasy Tip: With Clippard out of the picture in Oakland, Edward Mujica is the speculative favorite to pitch the ninth inning, but Drew Pomeranz could also be in the mix if he's moved back to a relief role. Fernando Rodriguez probably has the best skill set to pitch the ninth, but it's unclear if he'll be in the mix. Mujica has the experience over the others, but the A's could also use a committee approach from here on out. Target Mujica first if you're looking for saves, but expect this situation to be quite messy for fantasy owners.
