Sat, 25 Jun 2016 21:46:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) had his stitches removed from his left hand Saturday, June 25, and he did some light work behind the plate.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli in cast

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 11:47:42 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) is wearing a soft cast and said he'll likely have his stitches removed Monday, June 20. He received treatment Friday, June 17, and went through his first cardio workout at Wrigley Field. "They're going to get me back really quick," Cervelli said. "Right now, I've got to stay focused on getting healthy so I can help my team."

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli was expected to miss four to six weeks after he had the hamate bone in his hand removed. He's been a bit of a disappointment with a .257 average and no home runs after hitting .295 with seven dingers in 2015, but he still has plenty of value in two-catcher and NL-only leagues. Keep him stashed in those formats.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli headed to DL

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 12:41:13 -0700

Updating a previous story, Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) was placed on the 15-day disabled list after undergoing surgery on his broken hamate bone on his left hand on Saturday, June 11. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: The Pirates will turn to Chris Stewart as their main catcher in Cervelli's absence and pulled off a trade Saturday with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire Erik Kratz in an attempt to fortify their depth at the position. Stewart is batting .212 in limited action this season and is unlikely to be useful in fantasy outside of NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli expected to miss time

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 11:58:11 -0700

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli's (hand) left hand injury will not be season-ending, although he is expected to be sidelined for a while.

Fantasy Tip: Chris Stewart will take over as the Pirates' primary catcher in Cervelli's absence but isn't worth adding outside of NL-only and two-catcher fantasy leagues. He is batting just .212 with a home run and six RBI in 66 at-bats this season. Check back occasionally for updates on Cervelli's status.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli makes early exit

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 17:59:30 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) left the game against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, June 10, after experiencing pain in his left hand. He swung at the first pitch of his fourth-inning at-bat against SP Michael Wacha before being removed in favor of pinch hitter Chris Stewart, who remained in the game as the catcher.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli's injury is not believed to be serious but Stewart would serve as Pittsburgh's primary catcher if he is forced to miss an extended period of time. Keep checking back for further updates on his status.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang, Francisco Cervelli out

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 13:24:17 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang and C Francisco Cervelli are not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 9. 3B David Freese is starting at third base and is hitting fifth, while C Chris Stewart is catching and batting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is having a fine season in Pittsburgh with a .292 average and four home runs and 19 RBI in 171 at-bats. The power isn't really there, but he's been filling out the stat sheet and is a fine value play in DFS while hitting in Coors Field. Stewart is a low-end catching play but could be worth a deep sleeper selection in a hitter-friendly park.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli hitless in return

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 20:43:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (foot) was back in the lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader Tuesday, June 7, against the New York Mets. He was hitless in three at-bats with a walk and a strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the hitless game, it appears safe to get Cervelli back into the active fantasy lineup in all formats. He rested in Game 2, and will be ready to go Wednesday and beyond.

Pirates | Pittsburgh sitting four players

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 16:17:31 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte (ankle), 3B Jung Ho Kang, 2B Josh Harrison and C Francisco Cervelli are not in the starting lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets Tuesday, June 7. OF Gregory Polanco will start in left field, while OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting fourth against Mets SP Jacob deGrom. 1B Sean Rodriguez will start at third base and is batting sixth. 2B Cole Figueroa will start at second base and is batting seventh, while C Chris Stewart will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Joyce is probably the only player that has value among the new players in the lineup. Joyce is hitting .319 on the season and should be an attractive option in daily fantasy leagues.
