Saints | Rough practice for Drew Brees

Sat, 06 Aug 2016 20:29:02 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw four interceptions during practice Saturday, Aug. 6, and he said it may have been his worst performance at training camp in his career.

Fantasy Tip: Brees is breaking in a few new targets in the passing game, so the bad day is nothing to be concerned about. Don't hesitate to draft him as a QB1.

Saints | Drew Brees sticking to contract deadline

Thu, 28 Jul 2016 22:02:09 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said during training camp Thursday, July 28, he is sticking to his Week 1 contract extension deadline. "My mind will be on the preparation, week to week, on the next opponent," Brees said. "If there's (a deal) to be done, it's between now and the season."

Fantasy Tip: Brees is no longer the top fantasy quarterback, but he is still one of the safest bets to produce QB1 numbers.

Saints | No talks between Saints, Drew Brees

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 08:46:24 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he has not had contract extension talks with the Saints in the past three months. Brees said he would like to sign an extension at some point before the start of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Brees is entering the final year of his contract but will not hold out during training camp. Brees is still one of the better fantasy quarterbacks in the league even though he is 37 years old and should be a starting option in all fantasy leagues.

Saints | Drew Brees confident in young receivers

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 09:19:08 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has confidence in his young corps of wide receivers led by WR Brandin Cooks and WR Willie Snead.

"I think when Drew is out there, he doesn't look at Brandin Cooks as a young player," head coach Sean Payton said. "I don't think he looks at Snead that way anymore because of the experience they've had. There's a combination there of guys that know what to do and how do they fit with the scheme that we're asking of them."

Fantasy Tip: Brees is 37, but he led the league in passing yards last season and completed 68.3% of his passes. The 32 touchdowns limited his output some, but that could increase as the experience with this group increases. Cooks has the ability of a WR1 in fantasy, but he's probably better served as a WR2. Snead amassed 984 yards and three scores last year and is a serviceable WR3. Brandon Coleman is a breakout candidate as a WR4. As for Brees, he's just below the elite tier of fantasy QBs, but he should be one of the first options after the top three are gone.

Saints | Drew Brees likes Coby Fleener

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 12:47:04 -0700

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener has an uncanny ability to separate and get open, according to QB Drew Brees. "There's always a place to throw the ball where he can get it," Brees said. Fleener was targeted eight times during 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 drills this week -- the same number of targets as WRs Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Fantasy Tip: Fleener is one of the more intriguing options at tight end this season with his new team. In one of the most pass-happy offenses in the NFL, he's a mid- to low-end TE1, even if he still has some things to learn.

Saints | Andrus Peat more prepared for 2016

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 20:31:31 -0700

New Orleans Saints OT Andrus Peat has added muscle to his frame thanks to an improved diet, and QB Drew Brees said Peat is coming into his own. Peat said he would be happy playing either guard or tackle this season.

Saints | Drew Brees remains focused

Mon, 30 May 2016 13:34:42 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has remained focus this offseason despite a potential future contract extension. Brees is able to keep his focus with whatever situation he is in, according to head coach Sean Payton. As was reported earlier, Brees and his representatives will not negotiate a contract during the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Extension or no extension, Brees is still one of the most reliable real-life and fantasy quarterbacks, as he has been for several years now. He's in mid-QB1 territory for fantasy drafts this offseason.

Saints | Drew Brees won't negotiate in season

Thu, 26 May 2016 09:28:46 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, who said he hasn't had contract extension talks in two months, will not negotiate a new contract during the 2016 season. He doesn't plan to miss any offseason activities, whether a deal gets done or not.

Fantasy Tip: Brees' numbers have declined since his ridiculous 2011 season when he threw for 5,476 yards and 46 touchdowns. He hasn't exactly fallen off a cliff, either, despite his roster becoming somewhat questionable the last couple of years. Brees is 37, but he's still one of the first signal callers you're going to target after the first three studs are gone. That will be even more evident if Tom Brady's suspension holds.

Saints | Drew Brees will report for workouts

Mon, 23 May 2016 17:07:43 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he will be on the field for organized team activities Tuesday, May 24, even though the two sides have not be able to reach an agreement on a contract extension.

Fantasy Tip: Brees has thrown at least 30 touchdowns in each of his last eight seasons and at least 4,000 yards in each of his last 10 seasons. He should be a starting option in all fantasy leagues even though he is 37 years old.

Saints | Drew Brees not close to the end

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 06:59:12 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees didn't put much stock into the reports the team was looking to trade up to land the No. 1 pick earlier this offseason and said he doesn't plan to retire any time soon.

"It wouldn't be the first time that I've been on a team where they took a quarterback in the first round to come take my position and I would take the exact same approach now that I did then, which is, it's my team, it's my job," Brees said. "I don't think there's any use in talking about it because I doubt it would happen. And if it did, I trust our organization. I trust Mickey (Loomis) and Sean (Payton). If there's somebody there that you feel like is going to be the future of our organization for years to come, then take him, but I don't plan on giving up my job anytime soon."

Fantasy Tip: Brees would usurp Tom Brady in the QB pecking order if Brady's suspension sticks. Brees isn't a top-three quarterback anymore, but he's one of the next QBs to consider.

Saints | Drew Brees wanted Josh Norman

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 12:04:49 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was willing to amend his contract in order to acquire Washington Redskins CB Josh Norman.

Fantasy Tip: Brees is at the point in his career where he'll really do anything just to give the Saints the best chance to pursue a championship. Defense could be a big issue for New Orleans again in 2016, but that only means that Brees will likely still be passing frequently. He's a top QB1 again this season.

Saints | Drew Brees talks rekindled

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 07:56:32 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees' agents have renewed talks with the Saints on a four-year extension Wednesday, March 23. Brees has one year left on his deal.

Fantasy Tip: Brees is in that window of fantasy quarterbacks just below the top three or four, but he remains a solid QB1.

Saints | Drew Brees confident in extension

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 16:42:32 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is confident he'll reach a contract extension with the Saints, and he wants to play for New Orleans for the rest of his career. "So talks are ongoing, and I don't know if that is something that will be done next week or before the end of the year or next year or when. But obviously, I want to be a Saint for the rest of my career, and I think I've got a lot of good years left," Brees said. He's in the final year of a five-year, $100 million deal and has a $30 million salary cap hit in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Brees is 37 now and is no longer a top-tier elite fantasy quarterback worth taking in one of the first two rounds, but he still has enough weapons around him in New Orleans to put up QB1 numbers most weeks.

Saints | Drew Brees to get $22 M on new contract?

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 13:09:52 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees doesn't appear to be close to finalizing an extension with the team, but there is reason to believe his average salary will range somewhere between $22 to $23 million.

Fantasy Tip: Brees is set to count $30 million against the cap in 2016, so the question is not if, but when, something will get done this offseason. The 37-year-old isn't going to leave New Orleans anytime soon and can be expected to be a solid QB1 as long as he remains there.

Saints | Drew Brees has leverage for new deal

Sat, 05 Mar 2016 20:56:14 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is due to count $30 million against the salary cap in 2016, and because he has received the franchise tag twice before in his career, he would cost the Saints $43.2 million in 2017 if he were to be tagged.

Fantasy Tip: In order to lower Brees' cap hit for this year and beyond, New Orleans has to sign Brees to an extension. Even with an extension, Brees should end up being among the highest-paid players at his position, and he should be a safe bet to finish as a QB1 again in 2016.

Saints | Drew Brees deal could be easy

Thu, 25 Feb 2016 16:13:12 -0800

A deal for New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is expected to get done very easily, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said general manager Mickey Loomis and Brees' agent, Tom Condon, have already spoken about a new deal. Brees would currently count $30 million against the salary cap, but an extension beyond 2016 could lower that number.

Fantasy Tip: It seems highly likely at this point that the Saints will sign their star quarterback to an extension. Assuming he stays healthy, Brees is a lock to be near the top of the NFL in passing yards and in QB1 territory by season's end.

Saints | Extension wanted for Drew Brees

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 17:42:29 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and his agent have not spoken with general manager Mickey Loomis about a contract extension yet, but Loomis said he would like to get an extension done.

Fantasy Tip: It has been speculated that Brees could receive a three-year deal in an effort to lower his cap number. That remains to be seen, of course, but what doesn't remain to be seen is if Brees will be a top starting fantasy quarterback again, which he will be.

Saints | Three-year extension for Drew Brees?

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 12:29:38 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees could receive a three-year contract extension in order to lower his cap number, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett. His cap number would increase to $30 million in the final year of his current deal.

Fantasy Tip: Brees' cap number will certainly be an issue for the Saints if a long-term deal doesn't get done. Either way, Brees is staying with the Saints and he is staying in top-tier QB1 territory.

Saints | Drew Brees' money guaranteed

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 13:22:30 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees had $10.85 million of his $20 million salary guaranteed Wednesday, Feb. 10, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: There wasn't really any doubt that Brees was coming back to the bayou. He remains one of the most consistent and reliable fantasy and real-life quarterbacks. Continue to draft him as a top starting fantasy quarterback.

Saints | Drew Brees extension before free agency?

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 14:29:12 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees may receive a contract extension before the start of free agency March 15. Extending Brees before free agency begins would give the Saints the ability to use the extension to cut down Brees' salary-cap cost for 2016. New Orleans is currently $10 million over the projected salary cap.

Fantasy Tip: Brees and the Saints had not begun negotiations as of Feb. 4, but those negotiations should begin in the near future. Brees is still one of the best passers in the NFL and deserves a contract extension, which could solidify him staying in New Orleans for the rest of his career. He's a QB1 once again heading into next season.

Saints | No talks for Drew Brees yet

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 13:52:52 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said any conversations with the Saints regarding a contract extension have not happened yet.

Fantasy Tip: There's still plenty of time for Brees and the Saints to get an extension done. Even if he doesn't sign an extension this year, he'll likely still be quarterbacking the Saints in 2016. It's hard to believe an extension isn't in the cards for Brees, though. Draft him as a QB1 again this year.

Saints | Drew Brees still idle

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 07:23:35 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is still resting his torn plantar fascia in his right foot, but he's close to full strength.

Fantasy Tip: Brees will remain one of the upper-middle options at quarterback in the 2016 fantasy season.

Saints | Drew Brees could sign extension

Sat, 23 Jan 2016 10:51:06 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees could sign a multi-year extension this offseason and still save the Saints millions against their cap, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Fantasy Tip: It's somewhat of a complicated situation, but Brees' contract could be structured so that it saves the Saints money against their salary cap over the next few years. The bottom line is that he'll probably still be playing in New Orleans next season. He had somewhat of an underachieving 2015 campaign by his standards, but he's still a QB1.

Saints | Drew Brees not going anywhere

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 14:40:42 -0800

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis reiterated that QB Drew Brees will remain with the organization. Brees turns 37 Friday, Jan. 15, and will count $30 million against the 2016 salary cap in the final year of his contract. Loomis said Brees won't be released or traded. The only thing undecided is whether Brees will play out the last year of his deal or if the Saints will look at an extension. Brees is due $20 million in salary and bonuses this year. New Orleans is projected to be around $10 million over the projected salary cap of $150 million.

Fantasy Tip: Brees had a fine season in 2015, throwing for 4,870 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The fact that Sean Payton will stick around is a positive for the quarterback, as well. Brees can remain in QB1 territory, but keep in mind the fact that he isn't getting any younger.

Saints | Drew Brees ready in four to five weeks?

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 16:57:03 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) said he should be fine in four to five weeks after visiting a doctor Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Fantasy Tip: The initial timetable for Brees' recovery was four to six weeks, so this doesn't really change much. He'll obviously be ready to go for offseason activities unless he suffers any setbacks. Continue to view him as a QB1.

Saints | Drew Brees likely to remain starting QB

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 12:32:40 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees should still be the starting quarterback under retained head coach Sean Payton, according to Payton.

Fantasy Tip: The Saints had an off year and Payton was involved in the coaching carousel for a while, but now that Payton is returning and Brees has several months to recover from a torn plantar fascia and a season of being banged up, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that the Payton-Brees combo would return. Brees still led the league in passing yards this season and he's a QB1 for next season, too.

Saints | Drew Brees won't need surgery

Tue, 05 Jan 2016 12:32:54 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot, shoulder) will not need surgery for the torn plantar fascia in his right heel or for the shoulder injury he suffered earlier this season. The plan is for Brees to rest four to six weeks before beginning football and training activity, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Brees will obviously be ready to play next offseason, unless he suffers any setbacks. Despite the injuries Brees has dealt with, he still led the league in passing yards in 2015 (4,870). As is the case every year, he should be viewed as a QB1 in next season's drafts.

Saints | Drew Brees finishes strong

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 15:24:42 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees finished 32 of 42 for 323 yards and one touchdown in a 20-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Jan. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Brees salvaged an 8-8 season for the Saints, and he is likely to return to New Orleans in 2016. He's already told reporters he doesn't want to go anywhere else. There were a couple of bad games for the Saints in 2015 and games where Brees had an off day. He should rebound well next year.

Saints | Drew Brees expected to play

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 15:30:58 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 1, and is listed as probable for the Week 17 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) will be able to play despite his foot injury and has thrown 11 touchdowns in his last four games. Brees should be a solid starting option in most leagues this week against the Falcons.

Saints | Drew Brees limited

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 16:55:31 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) was limited during practice Thursday, Dec. 31.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) should be able to play in Week 17 even though he has been limited during practice. He has thrown 11 touchdowns over his last four games and could be a solid starting option for owners in most leagues.

Saints | Drew Brees feeling better

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 16:37:13 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) didn't take part in practice Wednesday, Dec. 30, but he said he feels better this week than where he was at this time last week.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) was extremely productive last week while playing with his injury, which should comfort his owners. However, he'll be facing an Atlanta Falcons squad that has been tough on quarterbacks for fantasy purposes. Look to fade Brees this weekend.

Saints | Drew Brees, Marques Colston out

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 15:54:09 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) and WR Marques Colston (chest) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) proved he could successfully play through his foot injury last week. However, he's a bust candidate against the strong secondary of the Atlanta Falcons this week. Colston ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) has three touchdowns in the last two games, but he's also a candidate to fade as a sleeper on FantasyScore.

Saints | Drew Brees doesn't see wholesale changes

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 09:07:52 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he doesn't see any scenario where he or head coach Sean Payton aren't back with the team next season. Brees has a $30 million salary cap figure next season. If the Saints were to trade or release Brees, they would have to do it by Feb. 10, when $10.85 million of his salary becomes fully guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: Brees has fallen out of the elite QB1 category, but he can still be among that second or third tier if he has weapons added in the offseason around him.

Saints | Drew Brees sets record

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 25 of 36 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16, giving him a record eighth straight season with at least 30 touchdown passes.

Fantasy Tip: Brees was sharp despite playing with an injured foot, and he continued his strong finish to the season. He has topped 300 yards in three straight games and has eight touchdowns over the stretch. Expect more of the same in Week 17 when the Saints take on the Falcons.

Saints | Drew Brees officially active

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 11:56:41 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is officially active for the Week 16 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) has been dealing with pain in his foot during practice this week but will be able to play against the Jaguars. He does have a favorable matchup but will be a risky option for owners because of the injury.

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 07:58:41 -0800

Confirming a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is active for Week 16's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) has a very favorable matchup against a weak Jacksonville passing defense and should be viewed as a QB1 in FantasyScore this afternoon.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is expected to start Week 16's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite being listed as questionable on the injury report, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the injury, Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) is worthy of FantasyScore lineup consideration today because the Jaguars have given up the 10th-most passing yards in the league this season.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) returned to practice on a limited basis Friday, Dec. 25, and is listed as questionable to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) draws a favorable matchup against a Jacksonville defense ranked 25th in passing yards allowed, and as long as he takes the field, he is worth starting at FantasyScore.

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 14:24:24 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 24. Brees said he will play in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) will play through the pain this weekend, much to the pleasure of fantasy owners as Brees has a top-five matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite a Grade 2 plantar fascia tear, start him as you normally would.

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 12:25:32 -0800

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) said he will play this weekend despite dealing with a Grade 2 plantar fascia tear.

Fantasy Tip: Brees' ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) toughness prevails. He will be available in a great matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars and should be a high-priority quarterback for your FantasyScore lineups.

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 12:18:51 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is making progress and intends to play in Week 16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) is in a lot of pain but his desire to play may outweigh that pain. If he is able to play, he should be considered a top-tier fantasy quarterback this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are bottom-five fantasy defense versus the position in 2015.

Saints | Drew Brees absent Wednesday

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 15:39:49 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Dec. 23. The Saints didn't actually practice Wednesday, so Brees' status is merely an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) is in immense pain and is fighting an uphill battle to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars with the Saints season effectively over. There's absolutely no way you should pay up for Brees in daily games, and make sure to downgrade all New Orleans receivers.

Saints | Drew Brees in horrible pain

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 12:19:04 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is in horrible, miserable pain, according to sources. However, he continues to rehab and is intent on playing in Week 16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: This is a similar injury to what Peyton Manning is dealing with. Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) is as tough as they come at quarterback, but it's not wise to run with him even if he toughs it out against the Jags. The injury will affect his ability to push off his foot and throw dowfield. As a result, you'll also need to downgrade the Saints receiving options, especially if Garrett Grayson or Matt Flynn start.

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 06:33:21 -0800

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is day to day, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) could play against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week as it seems like the torn fascia will be a pain-tolerance issue.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) suffered a torn plantar fascia in his right foot against the Detroit Lions Monday, Dec. 21. He still hopes to play in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: The good news for Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap), oddly enough, is that he suffered a full tear instead of a partial tear, which is easier to deal with. He still played pretty well despite the injury, and he has a really good matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, too, so don't rule him out of your FantasyScore lineups.

Saints | Drew Brees in walking boot

Tue, 22 Dec 2015 09:12:18 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) was in a walking boot after the team's Week 15 loss to the Detroit Lions Monday, Dec. 21, and he will undergo an MRI exam Tuesday, Dec. 22, to determine the severity of his injury. Brees finished the game with 341 yards and three touchdown passes.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't look good that Brees was in a boot last night, but let's wait and see what his MRI results turn up before going any further. His matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16 is a good one, but you may not want to risk it on FantasyScore if he's in danger of missing another game.

Saints | Drew Brees to have MRI

Tue, 22 Dec 2015 07:40:39 -0800

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) will have an MRI on his foot Tuesday, Dec. 22, after he injured it in the first half of the Week 15 game. Brees limped to the sidelines after taking a hit and had his foot inspected and taped up by trainers. However, he never missed a snap and returned to the game shortly. "I don't know exactly what we have going on here, but we will see after the MRI tomorrow," Brees said. "I just had to keep it moving, because it was getting stiff, but we were able to manage it."

Fantasy Tip: Brees ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) would have a decent matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16. Stay tuned for updates.

Fantasy Tip: If Brees cannot continue, or needs to miss a drive or two, Matt Flynn is warming on the sidelines and would take over the offense.
