Rays | Steve Pearce financial details

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 18:31:44 -0800

Updating previous reports, Tampa Bay Rays 1B/OF Steve Pearce's one-year contract is worth $4.75 million. The deal also includes performance bonuses based on the number of plate appearances reached. Pearce will receive $125,000 for reaching 400 and 425 plate appearances and $250,000 for 500, 525, 550 and 575 plate appearances. If he is traded, he will receive a one-time bonus worth $250,000.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce is expected to split time between first base and designated hitter, with an occasional start in the outfield against left-handed pitching. He hit .218 with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs in 325 at-bats for the Orioles in 2015 and could be a decent buy-low option from a fantasy standpoint.

Rays | Richie Shaffer could be odd man out

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 09:04:14 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays INF Richie Shaffer could find himself in danger of not making the 25-man roster, with Steve Pearce, Logan Morrison and James Loney expected to share time at first base and designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: The soon-to-be 25-year-old Shaffer batted just .189 last season but showed a promising amount of power, with three doubles and four home runs in 74 at-bats. Pearce and Morrison are expected to get the lion's share of the playing time and Loney could have all or part of the $8 million remaining on his contract eaten so that he can be moved to another team.

Free-agent 1B/OF Steve Pearce (Orioles) agreed to a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, Jan. 21, pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce could be a nice buy-low in real life and fantasy. He's expected to DH, play first base against lefties and some outfield.

Free-agent 1B Pedro Alvarez (Pirates), 1B Steve Pearce (Orioles), 1B Ike Davis (Athletics), 1B Chris Carter (Astros) and 1B/OF Daniel Nava (Rays) are of interest to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever lands at first for Milwaukee will have some value, possibly hitting between Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy.

Orioles | Adam Jones sitting vs. Blue Jays

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 12:51:46 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones is not in the starting lineup Monday, Sept. 28. 2B Steve Pearce draws into the lineup and is batting fourth against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Jones ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) played his first game in a week Sunday, Sept. 27, due to a back injury, so it might be a day off for rest Monday. Check back for an official announcement on his status. At this stage of the year, he stands as a risky own in seasonal leagues because he is a rest risk. Pearce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is a high-risk flier for FantasyScore contests Monday. He owns a respectable .474 slugging percentage in the second half, but it is accompanied by a .206 batting average.

Orioles | Matt Wieters, Gerardo Parra out

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 13:23:18 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters and OF Gerardo Parra are not in the lineup against Washington Nationals left-handed SP Gio Gonzalez Monday, Sept. 21. OF Steve Pearce is starting in right field and hitting cleanup, while C Caleb Joseph draws the start behind the plate and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is in a nice spot in the lineup, but he remains a deep sleeper on FantasyScore, especially with a .214 average (21-for-98) and four of his 13 home runs against left-handers this season. Joseph ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) isn't a terrible low-end catcher if you're looking to save money at the position on a day without many games. Joseph hit well earlier this year in place of Wieters and is hitting .270 (27-for-100) with four of his 11 homers against southpaws.

Orioles | Steve Pearce starting vs. Yankees

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:07:30 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 2B Steve Pearce is starting at first base and batting seventh against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia Wednesday, Sept. 9. 2B Jimmy Paredes is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has struggled all season, and he is a low-end option in all fantasy formats, including at FantasyScore. Paredes ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) hasn't been receiving many at-bats of late, but he has played well when given an opportunity. Look out for favorable matchups when he is in the lineup to utilize Paredes going forward.

Orioles | Steve Pearce on the bench

Sun, 06 Sep 2015 08:05:41 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 2B Steve Pearce is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada Sunday, Sept. 6. OF Nolan Reimold will start in left field and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is receiving a day off after playing in the last several games. Reimold recently rejoined the team but is not a fantasy option at this point.

Orioles | Chris Davis playing first base

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 11:35:22 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 1B Chris Davis will bat cleanup and play first base against Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland Sunday, Aug. 30. INF/OF Steve Pearce, who started at first base Saturday, Aug. 29, will play left field and bat second Sunday, with OF Gerardo Parra receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) is just 3-for-27 over the last seven days and is hitless in seven career at-bats against Holland, so using him in FantasyScore this afternoon would not be recommended. Pearce ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is 5-for-18 with a pair of home runs during the same stretch and can be viewed as a source of productive cap relief.

Orioles | Steve Pearce batting sixth vs. Royals

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 15:17:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 2B Steve Pearce is starting in left field and batting sixth against Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy Tuesday, Aug. 25. OF Henry Urrutia is not in the starting lineup Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has a single pinch-hit appearance since going on the disabled list with an oblique injury Saturday, July 18. You'll likely want to let him shake off some rust before trusting him in any fantasy format, but especially at FantasyScore. Urrutia ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is 9-for-33 with three runs and six RBI through his first nine games. He'll receive occasional duty in the outfield as long as he is handling the bat alright, so he warrants a roster spot in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.
