Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price said SP Mat Latos (knee) is coming along fine in his rehab from knee surgery. "He is doing fine, the progress has been substantial every day," said Price. "He is doing a lot in the weight room. He is on the field a lot more for extended long toss and some of the pitchers fielding practice. We're getting closer where he can cut and plant that left knee (surgically repaired), but we're not there yet."

Cincinnati Reds SP Mat Latos (knee) had a simple "flare-up" with his surgically repaired knee by doing extra exercises recently. He said it was some soreness, but nothing major.
Fantasy Tip: It doesn't appear to be a setback at this point. It is a bit concerning that he's pushing his rehab so hard that he could eventually have one or return too soon, though.

Cincinnati Reds RP Alfredo Simon will have a shot to compete for a starting rotation position this spring with SP Mat Latos (knee) being slowed by an injury. Simon made 16 starts for the Baltimore Orioles in 2011. "We do know we are short one starter right now without Mat," manager Bryan Price said. "If we were to have any setbacks where Mat was not ready to start the season, we have to look at the group we have and that would include Simon."
Fantasy Tip: Simon will purely serve as rotation insurance until Latos is healthy enough to return to the rotation. As a result, Simon will likely have very little to no fantasy significance.

Cincinnati Reds SP Mat Latos (knee) progressed to long tossing from 100-120 feet Sunday, Feb. 23. He also began stretching, throwing and drills with his teammates for the first time. There's no timetable for when he'll begin throwing from a mound, but he isn't considered far from the other pitchers.
Fantasy Tip: His knee surgery shouldn't have affected his draft stock much. However, this validates that he'll likely be ready for the start of the season. He's a solid No. 2 fantasy starter.

Cincinnati Reds SP Mat Latos (knee) felt good after throwing for 10 minutes from 45 feet Wednesday, Feb. 19. "Not bad for five days," Latos said. "What's funny is I'm in the middle of throwing and I look at the video guy -- and I still have stitches in my knee -- and he's zooming in on the stitches and stuff."
Fantasy Tip: If Latos doesn't suffer any setbacks, it seems very reasonable that he could be ready for opening day. Keep that in mind when drafting this spring.
