White Sox | Mat Latos picks up fourth win

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 15:28:17 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos continued his surprising early-season run against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, April 24, yielding a run on seven hits and two walks while striking out a pair across six innings.

Fantasy Tip: While he can't be expected to maintain this pace, Latos is doing a fine job of pounding the strike zone under the tutelage of renowned pitching coach Don Cooper and the results have been impressive, as he has allowed a total of two runs in 24 1/3 innings while posting a microscopic 0.82 WHIP. The 28-year-old is not a recommended start on the road against the Baltimore Orioles next weekend, but he has certainly earned enough respect from owners to trust against non-elite offenses.

White Sox | Mat Latos pitching inside

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 10:12:54 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos, who is 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA in 18 1/3 innings over his first three starts, said he's made more of an effort to pitch hitters inside this year. "It's definitely a funky movement. He shows the ball behind his back and all of a sudden comes up over his head like a pitching machine," OF Adam Eaton said. "I'm glad he's on my team."

Fantasy Tip: Latos has been one of the biggest pitching surprises up to this point in the early season. Injuries derailed an ugly 2015 in which he had an ERA of 4.95 with three different teams. He's no longer a power pitcher that can get out of jams with strikeouts, and he's relying much more on his control. The fact that he has faced three weaker hitting teams in the A's, Twins and Angels should be factored in. It won't always be this pretty, but Latos can be used as a spot starter in deeper leagues in the right matchups.

White Sox | Welcome back Mat Latos

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:56:35 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed two hits and three walks while fanning five over 6 1/3 shutout innings to beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Tuesday, April 19.

Fantasy Tip: Latos is 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA and a 0.60 WHIP. He was atrocious all spring, and it had some wondering if he'd make the team. However, after his first three starts, he needs to be owned everywhere.

White Sox | Mat Latos off to 2-0 start

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 14:30:12 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed only three hits and one run in six innings to beat the Minnesota Twins Thursday, April 14, and improve to 2-0 on the year. He's allowed four hits, two walks and one run over 12 innings in his first two starts.

Fantasy Tip: Latos does have something left in the tank it appears. But keep in mind his first two starts have come against the Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins on the road, both great places to throw for opposing pitchers. It won't always be this nice for Latos, but he can be effectively used in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues as a spot starter.

White Sox | Mat Latos sharp in debut with Chicago

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 16:13:43 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings to beat the Oakland Athletics Thursday, April 7, in his debut with the White Sox. Latos struck out two and walked one while throwing 56 of his 88 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: So much for Latos' rough spring numbers. He bounced back in his season debut to shut down the A's. Latos is useful for rotation depth in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues in spot starts such as this one, but he may struggle to put up good numbers at his hitter-friendly home park.

White Sox | Pale Hose announce starting rotation

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 13:18:37 -0700

Chicago White Sox SPs Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Carlos Rodon, Mat Latos and John Danks will comprise the starting rotation to begin the season, the team announced Tuesday, March 29.

Fantasy Tip: Sale is a fantasy ace to target in the early rounds of drafts, while Quintana and Rodon are upside candidates worth middle-round selections. Latos could have a degree of bounce-back appeal, but like Danks, the fourth and fifth Chicago starters should be left to cavernous mixed and AL-only formats.

White Sox | Mat Latos rocked in team debut

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 22:22:05 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos was knocked around for seven runs and 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings in his team debut in a Cactus League spring start Tuesday, March 22, against the San Francisco Giants. Manager Robin Ventura said he was encouraged by how "crisp" Latos looked in the first four innings, and he felt fatigue might have been a factor late. "He just has to get stronger and get deeper in the game," Ventura said.

Fantasy Tip: Latos is not necessarily assured of a rotation spot, and this certainly didn't help his cause. Fantasy owners in AL-only leagues will want to take a chance on him and hope he can get untracked, but mixed leaguers need not bother with him for now.

White Sox | Mat Latos hit hard Tuesday

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 16:42:23 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos had a real rough day Tuesday, March 22, opposite the San Francisco Giants, lasting 4 2/3 innings and surrendering seven runs on 11 hits. He also managed four strikeouts and no walks.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Latos' nightmare from last season is spilling into the new campaign. The former Padre right-hander was thought by many to be one of the more underrated signings last year when he was nabbed by the Marlins, but instead posted a 4-7 record with a 4.48 ERA. He was so disappointing that he was traded during the season to the Dodgers, who ended up releasing him after registering a 6.66 ERA in six games (five starts). Latos is someone to avoid in just about all drafts until he can turn it back around.

White Sox | Mat Latos being held out for now

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 22:52:18 -0800

Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos threw at the team's spring camp Monday, March 7, but he will not work in a spring game for a while. "(Pitching coach Don Cooper) has a reason," manager Robin Ventura said. "(Latos) seems fine. This has nothing to do with physically he has to stay back (at camp and throw batting practice). Coop has reasons for doing this."

Fantasy Tip: Latos joins a rotation with a pretty decent offense, so he should find double-digit wins on the south side of Chicago if he can stay healthy.

White Sox | Mat Latos financials

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 11:38:56 -0800

Updating a previous report, Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal Tuesday, Feb. 9, according to a major league source. Latos went 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 24 outings last year.

Fantasy Tip: Latos is likely to be in competition with the likes of John Danks, Erik Johnson and Jacob Turner for a final spot in the starting rotation. Latos could win it on experience alone. Injuries have hurt him the last two seasons, so a bounce-back season could be on the horizon, but a move to a hitter-friendly park will draw most fantasy owners away.
