Giants | Madison Bumgarner's velocity down

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 09:48:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner's average fastball velocity is down from 93 mph to 91 mph so far this season. However, his strikeout rate is up to 11.5 per nine innings from his career-high 9.6 K/9 last year. Bumgarner insists his arm feels fine, and the foot and rib cage injuries that appeared in spring training are not a factor.

Fantasy Tip: MadBum's 1.35 WHIP is a little concerning with 30 hits and 10 walks in 29 2/3 innings. However, many pitchers struggle out of the gates only to turn in banner seasons at the end. He's still a legit SP1 worth daily consideration when his turn comes up.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner struggles Friday

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 06:49:23 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner allowed seven runs on eight hits in five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, April 15, to suffer his first loss of the season. He struck out seven batters and walked one during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Bumgarner did allow only four earned runs during the game but has allowed four home runs in his three starts. He is scheduled to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in his next start and is still a must-start option in all leagues.

Dodgers | Scott Van Slyke removed after HBP

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 15:46:28 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Scott Van Slyke (back) was taken out of the game Saturday, April 9, against the San Francisco Giants with lower back tightness after getting hit by a pitch from SP Madison Bumgarner.

Fantasy Tip: Joc Pederson came on as a pinch runner and took over in center, pushing Trayce Thompson over to left. The Dodgers' once-deep outfield is quickly running out of bodies, as Carl Crawford went on the disabled list earlier Saturday with lower back soreness and Andre Ethier is expected to miss two to three months with a fractured tibia. Thompson is the most likely candidate for regular at-bats with all the turnover and might be worth a short-term add in most leagues.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner sluggish in first start

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 16:18:25 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner allowed five hits, five walks and three runs in just five innings in a win over the Milwaukee Brewers on opening day Monday, April 4. Manager Bruce Bochy said an illness has been going around the clubhouse, and Bumgarner had been taking medicine to prepare for his start.

Fantasy Tip: Bumgarner certainly didn't look himself in this one, and he was pitching under the weather after dealing with the flu bug yesterday. Give him a pass for this one. He should be good to go for his next start, and you should continue running him out there in your fantasy lineups.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner under the weather

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 10:13:28 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner (flu) was receiving treatment for the flu Sunday, April 3, but said he's fine for opening day Monday, April 4. Manager Bruce Bochy said he will keep an eye on Bumgarner.

Fantasy Tip: Bumgarner is a fantasy ace, and you won't be benching him on opening day in standard leagues against the rebuilding Brewers. However, with him being a bit under the weather, you should have serious concerns about paying up for him in daily contests Monday.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner doesn't have great results

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 16:56:07 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner allowed 14 runs in 11 1/3 innings in spring training not counting his outing against minor leaguers Tuesday, March 29. The positive for Bumgarner, though, is he was able to throw six innings Tuesday with no pain in his foot or ribs. "Whether I am or not, I better be ready for the season," said Bumgarner, who will not face hitters again before the April 4 opener in Milwaukee. "But I feel I'm right where I need to be."

Fantasy Tip: The MadBum hasn't had the best spring this year, but he also dealt with a few minor injuries. Give the ace lefty a pass. He should remain one of the top starting pitcher targets in fantasy drafts in the first several rounds.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner working on mechanics

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 20:44:08 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner said his delivery was "terrible" in his spring training start Saturday, March 19. "It's not quite where I want it. It's not too far away either. My timing is off, and my rhythm."

Fantasy Tip: Bumgarner has been working his way back from multiple injuries, but he is on track to be ready to start the year. He is a workhorse and a high-end fantasy ace.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner set for Saturday

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 16:11:31 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner (foot, rib cage) said he expects to start Saturday, March 19, after he played catch Wednesday, March 16, and threw a bullpen session Thursday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Bumgarner leaves spring training healthy, he is a slam-dunk fantasy ace worth selecting as one of the first pitchers off the board. He has averaged 16 wins and 217 strikeouts with a 2.90 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP through the past three seasons, after all.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner could pitch Saturday

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 18:12:02 -0700

Updating previous reports, San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner (foot, rib cage) could make his next start in a Cactus League game versus the Oakland Athletics Saturday, March 19, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Bumgarner's injuries are considered minor and it's likely that he would have played through the pain if this had happened during the regular season. He should continue to be viewed as an SP1 in all fantasy formats.

Giants | Madison Bumgarner to miss a start

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 09:05:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner (foot, rib cage) will miss at least one spring start with a nerve issue called neuroma in his left foot. He's also dealing with rib cage pain in his right side. An MRI exam on his injured side showed no significant oblique injury. Bumgarner said he could've pitched Sunday, March 13, if it were the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: It's not what you want to see from an ace with several weeks until the regular season. But this injury doesn't appear too serious, and Bumgarner might miss a start or two in a worst-case scenario to start the season. He should still be drafted as a fantasy ace in the early rounds, but keep a closer eye on his progress.
