Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) had surgery to repair a labrum in his right hip Monday, July 18. He had surgery on his left hip last year.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco was limited to just 23 games last season, and managed to make it through only 16 contests this year before succumbing to yet another season-ending injury. The 28-year-old had a breakout campaign when he registered 25 home runs and 80 RBI in 114 games two years ago, but his extensive injury history makes it hard to invest in him.

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) is expected to need a minimum of four months to recover from surgery to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Fantasy Tip: This procedure will essentially end Mesoraco's season, so he should be dropped in all seasonal leagues. The 27-year-old hit .140 with one RBI in 50 at-bats in 2016 and has played in just 39 games over the past two years. Tucker Barnhart will serve as Cincinnati's No. 1 catcher and he makes a viable option in NL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher fantasy formats.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) will undergo left shoulder surgery to repair his torn labrum Tuesday, May 10.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco should be replaced in all seasonal leagues, and even in keeper/dynasty formats, you'll really want to consider how much benefit there is to stashing the backstop. It likely isn't worth it. Tucker Barnhart will take care of catching duties most nights, and he is a viable deep mixed, two-catcher and NL-only option with a respectable .278 batting average to start the season through 59 plate appearances.

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) is weighing his options, including playing through a torn labrum. "I'm going to definitely have to get surgery at some point," Mesoraco said Monday, May 2.
Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain if Mesoraco will be able to return anytime soon, but he should be reserved until he can officially return and prove his health in at least a handful of games without any setbacks.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list with a torn labrum in his left shoulder Monday, May 2.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco can be replaced in all seasonal leagues, and while the good news is it isn't his throwing shoulder, the backstop is set to miss another season of action. Tucker Barnhart is a viable add in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and NL-only leagues given the abundance of at-bats he'll receive, especially since he is 13-for-43 to start the season. Still, he is a low-end backstop in all fantasy formats.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco remains out of the starting lineup Monday, May 2. C Tucker Barnhart is behind the plate and batting eighth against San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco is hitting .140/.218/.160 with one RBI in 50 at-bats and hasn't started since last Wednesday. It's time to start looking for other catching options in mixed leagues. Barnhart, on the other hand, is hitting .302 (13-for-43). However, he has only four career home runs and is nothing more than a low-end second catcher in two-catcher formats.

Cincinnati Reds C Tucker Barnhart is in the starting lineup for the third consecutive day in place of C Devin Mesoraco Sunday, May 1, versus Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke.
Fantasy Tip: Barnhart is batting .308 with three doubles and four RBI through 39 at-bats and should be viewed as a value play in daily fantasy games. On the other hand, Mesoraco has played just twice in the past week and is batting .140 with one RBI through 50 at-bats. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats for now.
