Pirates | Tony Watson struggling

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 17:26:37 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Tony Watson has allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings over his last three appearances.

Fantasy Tip: Watson has been one of the best setup men in the game, but with his value already limited by the lack of saves, don't be afraid to look for another option if his struggles last much longer.

Pirates | Tony Watson reinstated

Sat, 28 May 2016 07:54:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Tony Watson was reinstated from the paternity list Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Watson has been excellent for the Bucs this year with a 2.08 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 7.1 strikeouts per nine innings in the primary eighth-inning setup role to closer Mark Melancon. Watson is a handcuff to Melancon and can be used in deeper leagues for his solid ratios.

Wed, 25 May 2016 11:20:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Tony Watson was placed on the paternity list Wednesday, May 25. RP Rob Scahill has been recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Watson is the primary eighth-inning setup man for Mark Melancon in Pittsburgh. The left-hander has been stellar with a 2.18 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings. He's valuable in much deeper leagues and as a handcuff for Melancon owners.

Pirates | Mark Melancon to remain closer

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 07:37:22 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon will remain the team's closer, with RPs Joakim Soria and Tony Watson serving as setup men.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon owners have nothing to fear as long as he continues to be successful in the closer role. He's earned plenty of rope this season, so it'd likely take a lot for the Pirates to bump him out of the role. Soria's fantasy value obviously takes a big hit. There's not much reason to hold onto him if he's not closing games.

Pirates | Mark Melancon to remain closer?

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 15:51:26 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon is expected to remain the closer, following the acquisition of RP Joakim Soria from the Detroit Tigers Thursday, July 30. Soria and RP Tony Watson will serve as a setup duo.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon owns a measly 1.32 ERA, but he also a miniscule strikeout rate of just 6.23. Still, Melancon has racked up 32 saves for the season, and he'll likely continue to receive the majority of save opportunities. Soria owners should move on once an official decision is made by the Pirates.

Pirates | Mark Melancon may not be available

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 11:14:53 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon's status for the game Wednesday, June 3, is being described as "wait-and-see" by manager Clint Hurdle. RP Tony Watson also will not be available against the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon has saved three of the team's last four games, including pitching on back-to-back nights the past two days. If a save situation arises today and Melancon doesn't pitch, Jared Hughes could be the option in the ninth for Hurdle. Your friendly public service announcement: Nothing new to see here. Carry on.
