Pirates | Jeff Locke more likely for relief

Between Pittsburgh Pirates SPs Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson, who will both be starting rotation insurance heading into spring training, Locke is more likely to transition to a relief role if the team needs it at any point. Locke could become the second lefty in the bullpen along with RP Tony Watson. Locke gave up only one hit in 4 1/3 relief innings last year, and hitters typically have much more success the second time they see him in the same game.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli will be the team's primary eighth-inning setup man out of the bullpen, according to skipper Clint Hurdle. RP Tony Watson is the only lefty in the pen, and RP Chris Resop is set for the seventh inning. RP Jared Hughes will be in long relief, and Hurdle has yet to define RP Evan Meek's role. "It's going to be interesting to see where his niche evolves," Hurdle said, adding that Meek has been effective against left-handed batters as well as righties.

The Pittsburgh Pirates may decide to open the regular season with eight relievers in their bullpen as a result of SP Charlie Morton (hip) being on the disabled list. RPs Joel Hanrahan, Jason Grilli and Chris Resop appear to be locks to make the team, with RPs Tony Watson, Evan Meek and Juan Cruz also having good chances of being on the 25-man roster. RPs Daniel Moskos, Jared Hughes and Chris Leroux are also in the hunt for a spot in the bullpen, although Leroux is out of minor league options.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with 25 players for the 2012 season, meaning that all of the players on their 40-man roster are now under contract. OFs Gorkys Hernandez, Starling Marte, Andrew McCutchen and Alex Presley, INFs Chase d'Arnaud, Matt Hague, Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer, Yamaico Navarro, Gustavo Nunez and Neil Walker, C Mike McKenry and Ps Jared Hughes, Chris Leroux, Brad Lincoln, Jeff Locke, Daniel McCutchen, James McDonald, Kyle McPherson, Bryan Morris, Daniel Moskos, Rudy Owens, Tony Watson, Duke Welker and Justin Wilson agreed to terms Saturday, March 3.
