Royals | Chris Young moved to bullpen

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 16:03:45 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young has been moved to the bullpen. SPs Dillon Gee or Brian Flynn will "probably" start in his place Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: This move should surprise no one, as despite a solid first season with the Royals last year, Young has just been awful in 2016. Not only does he own a putrid 6.90 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, but the veteran had also surrendered a whopping 26 homers -- in just 60 total innings! Meanwhile, Gee and Flynn are not worth rushing to acquire, as neither has a high ceiling.

Royals | Dillon Gee sent to minors

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 21:33:39 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Dillon Gee was sent to Class AAA Omaha on Wednesday, June 1, as part of a flurry of roster moves. He was the winning starter for the Royals on Tuesday, May 31. In a related move, RP Peter Moylan was recalled.

Fantasy Tip: According to manager Ned Yost, Gee's demotion is only temporary, and the veteran will be back once he spends the requisite 10 days in the minors. It sounds like his time in the rotation is done, however, so if your were mining for wins in AL-only leagues you can safely drop Gee.

Royals | Dillon Gee struggles against Minnesota

Wed, 25 May 2016 17:49:08 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Dillon Gee (1-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in a loss to the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, May 25, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Gee struggled mightily in his third start of the season against the team with the worst record in the majors, allowing 11 baserunners over four-plus innings. He should be viewed as a risky play for his next start against the Tampa Bay Rays Monday, May 30.

Royals | Dillon Gee struggles in first start

Sat, 14 May 2016 22:02:10 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Dillon Gee held the Atlanta Braves scoreless on three hits over the first five innings, but Gee retired only one of the six batters he faced in the sixth. He was charged with three runs and six hits, while striking out five and walking three, in a 5-0 loss on Saturday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: This loss can't be pinned entirely on Gee, because Kansas City has really struggled as of late. However, you may want to hold off putting Gee in your fantasy lineup. Depending on how long the Royals staff may be in flux, there is a chance the team will go with other pitchers to fill the holes. If Gee can start and quickly show some good stuff, then his value goes up. For now, leave him alone.

Royals | Kris Medlen has rotator cuff injury

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:07:17 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (shoulder) is dealing with right rotator cuff inflammation. His 15-day disabled list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 11. Manager Ned Yost said both Medlen and SP Chris R. Young (forearm) should be able to return when they're eligible to come off the DL. SPs Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy will serve as fill-in starters in the meantime. Gee will throw against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, May 14, and Duffy will go Sunday, May 15. Duffy will begin on a 50-pitch limit.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Medlen nor Young are guaranteed to return to a rotation spot when they're healthy after really struggling before their injuries. Gee and Duffy aren't long-term solutions and aren't attractive options for the spot starts despite juicy matchups against the Braves. Both Gee and Duffy are unlikely to pitch deep in their starts this weekend. Keep tabs on Kyle Zimmer and Miguel Almonte in the minors, as both young pitchers could become options for the rotation at some point this year.

Royals | Two spots in KC rotation up for grabs

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 08:10:39 -0800

Kansas City Royals SPs Kris Medlen, Chris R. Young, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee are expected to compete for the final two spots in the starting rotation during spring training, according to manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland.

Fantasy Tip: Yost hinted that SPs Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez would likely be the first three starters in the rotation, although he is hesitant to name an Opening Day starter. Owners in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues should keep tabs on this competition throughout spring training and the winners are worthy of consideration as late-round fliers in this year's fantasy drafts.

Mets | NY to use spot starter soon

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 17:17:53 -0700

The New York Mets tentatively plan to use a spot starter on their next road trip, and Ps Dillon Gee and Logan Verrett are the primary candidates to receive a start. The Mets are looking for ways to slow the increasing innings totals for young SPs Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

Fantasy Tip: You can ignore Gee and Verrett in all formats, since they're likely to only have the one start. This is just another reminder that the Mets' young starters will have one less start down the stretch. It also looks plausible that they'll go back to a six-man rotation when Steven Matz (lat) is ready to return around the beginning of September.
