QB Jamie Martin was the odds-on favorite to win the job but head coach Sean Payton has been impressed with the play of QB Todd Bouman. Both quarterbacks will get a chance to impress their coach one more time Friday, Sept. 1.

Brett Martell, of the Associated Press, reports New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (shoulder) is expected to play through most of the first quarter of the team's preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 12. Brees playing means QBs Adrian McPherson and Jason Fife may not see any action. Head coach Sean Payton said he intends to play reserve QB Jamie Martin in the second quarter, followed by QB Todd Bouman "at some point in the third quarter."

The Associated Press reports New Orleans Saints QB Jamie Martin returned to training camp in time Wednesday, Aug. 2, to participate in the afternoon practice. Martin was excused last week to be with his wife, who underwent an operation for breast cancer. Martin said his wife would move with him to New Orleans where she will continue her treatment during the regular season. Payton said it was good to have Martin back and that he is not concerned with Martin being behind after missing nearly six days of training camp. Payton added, "He's a pretty sharp guy. It will be a matter of a day or two. We had him in the offseason so the installation (of the new offense) to him will be familiar."

Jimmy Smith, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton feels backup QB Jamie Martin is a good fit for the Saints. "This is a good fit," Payton said. "He's kind of one of those even-keel guys who never gets too excited or too down. He's got a pretty good personality. I think he's grasping what we're doing pretty quickly. He's got a good idea of how to locate the football, and good anticipation. So those are good things." Martin, for his part, is excited to be in New Orleans. "I loved sitting down and talking to Sean (Payton) and (quarterbacks coach) Pete Carmichael. And I loved the things they were doing on offense. And they seemed to be great guys to work with."

He presumably would be the Seahawks' No. 3 quarterback, with his experience allowing him to be the backup for games in which the Seahawks use current backup QB Seneca Wallace in another role.

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the interest the Cincinnati Bengals have shown in free agent QB Jamie Martin (Rams) will not prevent him from visiting with the Seattle Seahawks. Martin's agent Tom Mills said the major obstacle against a deal with the Bengals is money. The Bengals are interested in putting more money towards their offensive lineman. Mills commented, "I can understand that from their perspective."

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports free agent QB Jamie Martin (Rams) is back in the picture with the Cincinnati Bengals. The team talked again Monday, April 3, with his agent, Tom Mills. With the Miami Dolphins favored to engineer a trade with the Detroit Lions and sign QB Joey Harrington, the Bengals again are turning toward Martin. "If Harrington is gone, we'll move forward with it," said Mills. "The contract would still need to be negotiated, and there are some material issues. Jamie would just as well not play as play for the minimum."

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals talked contract with agent Tom Mills again Friday, March 24, but Mills said he is not close to reaching an agreement for his client, free agent QB Jamie Martin (Rams), with the team. "We did exchange contract proposals," Mills said of his conversation with Bengals vice president Troy Blackburn. "There is mutual interest." Mills said a possible contract probably won't be completed for a week or two.

Mills has yet to talk to the front office. "I plan to talk to the front office in the morning if they don't get in touch with me," said Tom Mills late Tuesday afternoon, March 14. "He's interested. He felt comfortable and it helps a lot that Ken is there. I don't think it's a surprise that Kitna is gone, but now the situation is clarified."
