Athletics | Sean Doolittle throws Friday

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 14:49:32 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) played catch for the first time since being shut down with a shoulder strain in January Friday, March 27, and he said he's feeling good. He made 15 throws from 45 feet and 10 throws from 60 feet and was pain-free. Doolittle will play catch every other day and increase the distance of his throws. However, Doolittle won't return earlier than May.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is expected to regain the closing role when he returns, but it's also entirely possible that Tyler Clippard keeps the job if he's performing well. Both relievers are worth drafting in deep mixed leagues, and it's preferable to handcuff them to each other.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle will throw Friday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:48:38 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) will play catch for the first time Friday, March 27, since being diagnosed with a slight rotator cuff tear in his left shoulder in February.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season, and Tyler Clippard will handle the ninth-inning duties in his absence. However, it isn't out of the question for Clippard to take the job and run with it. Both relievers are risky selections before the endgame of drafts in shallow leagues. In deep formats, both are suitable targets for saves. It is all speculation at this point how the bullpen roles will shake out when Doolittle returns, so the healthy arm with the job should be the priority.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle begins throwing

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 07:06:49 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) began a throwing program Monday, March 23. The first step in the process was a session involving sock throws.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle could just miss the first couple of weeks, with Tyler Clippard filling in at closer. Clippard is a decent reliever to own even without save potential for ratios help and K's. Doolittle is a good second closer to target in traditional leagues.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle to throw next week

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 16:06:37 -0700

Updating a previous report, Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) expects to resume throwing next week as he works his way back from a small rotator cuff tear and soreness in his left shoulder. He said he plans to start a throwing program similar to what he does in the offseason. He has hesitated to put a timetable on when he might return to the team. Doolittle posted 22 saves and a 2.73 ERA in 2014, while compiling a 11.13 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle might not miss much time to start the 2015 season, but will he be in a battle for the ninth-inning job with Tyler Clippard when he returns? It'll certainly lower Doolittle's price in drafts, and you should ideally look to handcuff him to Clippard in the later rounds.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle closer to throwing

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:09:49 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is closer to throwing following plyometric work to strengthen his throwing shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle won't be rushed along, as the club wants to make sure he is 100 percent before throwing him back into the fire. For now, Doolittle is worth a middle to late-round selection in most leagues.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle talks recovery

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 15:46:58 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) expects to be a "thorn in the side" of the trainers during his recovery. "I told them, 'Whatever you throw up on that whiteboard, I'm going to crush it today. Then after I'm done, tell me what I have tomorrow.' I kind of like it that way. I keep my blinders on and focus on what I have to do."

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle has already been ruled out for opening day, which leaves the closing duties up in the air in Oakland. Tyler Clippard is likely the front-runner, but Ryan Cook also has ninth-inning experience. Doolittle is a worthy stash candidate in the majority of formats, especially if he progresses favorably over the next few weeks.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle feeling better

Mon, 09 Feb 2015 11:25:26 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is feeling much better after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his shoulder to alleviate swelling and irritation. He's started range-of-motion stretching. However, there's no timetable for when he'll throw again, and he's still expected to miss the start of the season. RPs Tyler Clippard, Eric O'Flaherty and Ryan Cook are the obvious candidates to take over closing duties with Doolittle out.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle to miss start of season?

Mon, 26 Jan 2015 08:54:55 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season due to a slight tear of the rotator cuff in his left shoulder. He also has considerable inflammation and irritation in the area. He received a platelet-rich plasma injection Friday, Jan. 23, in an effort to decrease the inflammation and irritation before he starts a rehab plan. There is no timetable for his return, although doctors think he can recover and pitch without undergoing surgery. Doolittle went 2-4 with a 2.73 ERA and 22 saves in 61 outings for Oakland last year.
