Mariners | Steve Cishek lost mechanics

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 14:10:57 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek said his long delivery got out of whack in spring training last season, and he didn't right the ship until after he lost the closer role with the Miami Marlins.

"When you're pitching in the ninth inning and you're mechanically not very comfortable, it's hard to have the confidence you had in years past," Cishek said. "So I just lost a little confidence early because I didn't feel the same, and it reflected in my performance. Unfortunately, it kind of hurt the team a little early on as well, so it was a bummer. But also, it was great for me mentally because it helped me to handle adversity, and if this problem comes up in the future, I'll be able to handle it quicker."

Fantasy Tip: Cishek is the favorite to close for Seattle and should be a cheap target for saves as your third fantasy closer.

Mariners | Steve Cishek set for closing duties

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 12:07:21 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek is expected to be the closer to begin the 2016 season, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek has 95 career saves, including two seasons with over 30. However, he also lost the closer job last season with Miami. Still, Cishek should be viewed as a potential mid-tier relief option for seasonal drafts this spring, and pitching in the American League for the first time could help his submarine delivery keep batters uncomfortable at the plate.

Mariners | Seattle adds Steve Cishek

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 07:19:26 -0800

Free-agent RP Steve Cishek (Cardinals) agreed to a two-year deal worth at least $10 million with the Seattle Mariners Saturday, Dec. 12, according to according to a source. The deal could be worth as much as $17 million with incentives.

Fantasy Tip: There is a good chance that Cishek receives the first opportunity to close next season, so owners should monitor his role during spring training. Cishek has been a closer in the past and could be a solid draft choice in mixed leagues if he wins the closer job.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal was unavailable

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 14:40:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal was not unavailable in a save situation against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, Sept. 22, and neither was RP Jonathan Broxton. The Cardinals went with RP Kevin Siegrist to lock the game down in the eighth and RP Steve Cishek recorded the save. It was the 95th save of Cishek's career, and he became the sixth Cardinals reliever to record a save in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has been one of the more consistent closers in the league this year. He has 47 saves, a 1.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Continue to run with Rosenthal as your closer to finish out the season.

Cardinals | St. Louis adds Steve Cishek

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 12:13:04 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired RP Steve Cishek from the Miami Marlins Friday, July 24, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek lost his closer role with the Marlins earlier this season, and then he even did a minor league tour of duty. Since he was recalled, though, Cishek has a 0.71 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .239/.294/.261 slash line over 13 appearances and 12 2/3 innings. Barring injury, he still won't factor into the saves conversation with the Cardinals, though. He should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation saves stash in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Cardinals | Steve Cishek in crosshairs

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 19:03:55 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking at Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek as a potential trade target.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek was demoted from the closer's role after a rough start, but he could be a solid setup man for the contending Cardinals if he gets his form back.

Marlins | Steve Cishek recalled

Sat, 13 Jun 2015 10:05:00 -0700

The Miami Marlins have called up RP Steve Cishek from Class AA Jacksonville. In five outings in the minors, he allowed five hits over six scoreless innings, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek began the season as Miami's closer but posted a 1-5 record with a 6.98 ERA over 19 1/3 innings and only converted three of seven save opportunities before being demoted. A.J. Ramos has pitched well since assuming the ninth-inning role, so expect Cishek to be used in low-leverage situations for the foreseeable future.

Marlins | Steve Cishek optioned to minors

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 23:02:44 -0700

The Miami Marlins optioned RP Steve Cishek to Class AA Jacksonville (Fla.) Monday, June 1.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek has gone from one of the elite relievers in the National League to unpitchable for the Marlins in the course of a couple of months. He’ll try to iron out his problems and get back to the majors, but for now he is only worth keeping on an NL-only roster if you have flexibility or spots designated for those in the minors.

Marlins | New manager turning to A.J. Ramos

Mon, 18 May 2015 13:21:53 -0700

Miami Marlins RP A.J. Ramos will serve as the closer while RP Steve Cishek works out his kinks, according to manager Dan Jennings.

Fantasy Tip: Ramos was the lead candidate under the old regime, but fantasy owners can feel a little more secure about their Ramos shares now that Jennings has confirmed Ramos will receive save opportunities. Ramos should be owned in all formats. He recorded his first save Wednesday, May 13, and currently sports a 0.95 ERA, a 0.79 WHIP and a 11.4 K/9.

Marlins | Miami to mix and match in ninth

Tue, 12 May 2015 10:12:42 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek blew his second straight save against the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, May 11, and he's converted only three of his seven save chances in 2015, pushing his ERA up to 10.32 - 13 runs in 11 1/3 innings. As a result, manager Mike Redmond said the team will likely mix and match in the ninth inning, with RPs A.J. Ramos, Bryan Morris and Mike Dunn being options.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek will probably be demoted to pitch in lower-leverage situations, at least until he can get back on track. A.J. Ramos, who has a 1.06 ERA and 11.1 K/9 rate in 17 innings, should be your first choice off the waiver wire if you're looking for saves. Add Ramos immediately in all formats.
