Mariners | Steve Cishek struggling lately

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 10:03:07 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek had a 0.98 ERA in his first 16 outings with 11 saves in 12 chances. Since then, he's sporting a 5.40 ERA in 11 outings and has converted only three of his six save chances. The Mariners aren't concerned yet, though, and they don't see anyone currently available on the open market as an upgrade over what they have.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek's ERA on the year is up to 2.70, but his WHIP (0.96) and K/9 (11.4) have been great for fantasy owners this year. The M's don't really have a standout reliever that could step in in save situations if Cishek continues to struggle, but veteran Joaquin Benoit would likely be the first choice. Don't sleep on youngster Edwin Diaz, either, who has electric stuff.

Mariners | Bullpen lets James Paxton down

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 22:30:56 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton scattered six hits and two walks over 6 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts Saturday, June 11, against the Texas Rangers. RP Steve Cishek blew the save in the ninth inning, costing Paxton a much-deserved win.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the no-decision, Paxton was very sharp and has re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option. He is 0-2 on the season, but he has a stellar 2.25 ERA which helps owners across all fantasy formats and DFS play.

Mariners | Steve Cishek picks up save

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 05:57:52 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek allowed one run on one hit in 1 1/3 innings against the Texas Rangers Friday, June 10, but was still able to earn his 14th save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek has rebounded since blowing back-to-back games a few weeks ago. He has a solid 2.60 ERA and should continue to be the team's closer. Cishek should be a valuable player in most fantasy leagues as long as he keeps the closers role.

Mariners | Steve Cishek blows back-to-back saves

Sun, 15 May 2016 00:17:04 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek blew his second save in as many days Saturday, May 14, as the Mariners fell, 9-7, to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek took the loss and fell to 2-3 overall. Cishek could be on thinner ice in Seattle, but the reality is who would replace Cishek on the mound as the closer? Mike Montgomery and Vidal Nuno don't exactly strike terror into the hearts of opposing teams. It could be Joaquin Benoit, but health issues are at play here. Still, if Cishek continues to stumble, look elsewhere for your saves.

Mariners | Steve Cishek unavailable Wednesday

Wed, 11 May 2016 15:37:42 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek is unavailable to pitch Wednesday, May 11, after he recorded a four-out save Tuesday, May 10.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek has been fantastic in the ninth for the M's in his first season with them, recording 11 saves while posting a 0.98 ERA and walking only 2.5 hitters per nine innings. If he can keep the free passes to a minimum, he could continue performing like he did earlier in his career with the Marlins. If a save situation arises today, Joel Peralta figures to get first crack at it.

Mariners | Steve Cishek earns another save

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 05:24:49 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless 10th inning against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 22, to earn his fourth save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek has not allowed a run in his last six appearances and only two hits during that span. He is also averaging a strikeout per inning, which makes him an attractive option in all leagues.

Mariners | Steve Cishek earns save

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 14:53:14 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless 10th inning against the Cleveland Indians Thursday, April 21, to earn his third save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek has pitched well so far this season and should continue to be the closer for the time being. Cishek likely is owned in most deep mixed leagues and should be in starting lineups for owners.

Mariners | Steve Cishek won't be extended

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 15:11:36 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek pitched two innings in an extra-inning win over the Texas Rangers Wednesday, April 13, but manager Scott Servais said that won't be a regular occurrence. Cishek's first inning went quick, and the Mariners had an off day Thursday, April 14. Cishek threw two innings in just seven of his 263 appearances from 2012 to 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Cishek should be owned in all formats as a second or third fantasy stopper. He doesn't have any saves yet but is off to a good start with one run allowed in five innings of work (1.80 ERA). He doesn't have typical strikeout stuff for a closer, though, and has collapsed in a closer role before, so have Joaquin Benoit or Tony Zych handy if you own Cishek.

Mariners | Steve Cishek dealing with soreness

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 15:45:18 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek (biceps) has soreness in his biceps, which surfaced after his March 6 outing opposite the Texas Rangers, but the 29-year-old said it's just a "normal spring occurrence," before proceeding to throw a 25-pitch bullpen workout. "We all deal with soreness," Cishek added. "We're just being cautious right now. Everything is good. I'll be in a game pretty soon."

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound like anything serious, but regardless, Cishek will be a bit of a risky draft pick for owners who opt to select him as one of their closers. Cishek struggled mightily in Miami last year before losing his job to A.J. Ramos, but bounced back nicely after he was acquired by the Cardinals, with whom he posted a 2.31 ERA and .212 opposing batting average in 27 appearances. He'll benefit from pitching half his games at Safeco Field, but it is concerning that his strikeout rate dropped to a career low in 2015.

Mariners | Steve Cishek lost mechanics

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 14:10:57 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Steve Cishek said his long delivery got out of whack in spring training last season, and he didn't right the ship until after he lost the closer role with the Miami Marlins.

"When you're pitching in the ninth inning and you're mechanically not very comfortable, it's hard to have the confidence you had in years past," Cishek said. "So I just lost a little confidence early because I didn't feel the same, and it reflected in my performance. Unfortunately, it kind of hurt the team a little early on as well, so it was a bummer. But also, it was great for me mentally because it helped me to handle adversity, and if this problem comes up in the future, I'll be able to handle it quicker."

Fantasy Tip: Cishek is the favorite to close for Seattle and should be a cheap target for saves as your third fantasy closer.
