New York Mets SP Jeremy Hefner (elbow) will visit Dr. James Andrews on Monday, Aug. 26, but he doesn't expect the recommendation to undergo Tommy John surgery to change. The right-hander will also have arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs, likely along with the elbow-ligament reconstruction procedure. He had been pitching through pain for a while, and he believes that he made it worse by doing so.
Fantasy Tip: Hefner will probably miss the entire 2014 season, given that he has a long recovery ahead of him.

New York Mets SP Jeremy Hefner (elbow) will see a doctor Tuesday, Aug. 20, to determine if he'll need Tommy John surgery on his elbow. Hefner is dealing with a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Fantasy Tip: Even if Hefner doesn't need Tommy John, it'll be tough for him to return and pitch again this season. Don't hold out hope that he will contribute in the last month of the season.

The New York Mets placed SP Jeremy Hefner (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow Wednesday, Aug. 14. The team said his injury is chronic, but he won't require surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Hefner's year is likely over, although the club believes there's a chance he'll be back next month. He was already optioned by the Mets, so he's probably not owned in many leagues anymore. If he does return this year, don't expect much out of him.

The New York Mets have demoted SP Jeremy Hefner (elbow) to Triple-A Las Vegas. Hefner, who is 0-2 with a 9.13 ERA in five starts since the All-Star break, claims that he has a nagging elbow injury and will visit team doctors Monday, Aug. 12. If he is deemed injured, the demotion will be reversed and he will be placed on the major league disabled list.

The New York Mets will return to a five-man rotation after the All-Star break, and manager Terry Collins indicated that SPs Shaun Marcum, Jeremy Hefner and Dillon Gee aren't guaranteed to have spots in the rotation when that happens. Marcum's $4 million salary doesn't make him immune, especially with the way Gee has pitched lately. Hefner could be moved to the bullpen or optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. "When we get back to five guys, I think we're going to take the five guys that we think are the best to run out there every fifth day, and what gives us the best opportunity to win," Collins said.
Fantasy Tip: The odd-man out will probably come down to whichever pitcher is throwing the poorest when the time comes. The club might prefer to leave Marcum in the rotation since he has bonuses in his contract if he's pitching in relief. Stay tuned.
