Twins | Danny Santana dinged Saturday

Sun, 28 Sep 2014 10:38:08 -0700

Minnesota Twins SS Danny Santana (knee) appeared to be shaken up somewhat after Detroit Tigers SS Andrew Romine slid hard into second base in an attempt to break up a double play Saturday, Sept. 27. Santana's right knee collided with Romine's head and both players were eventually removed from the game, although not immediately. Santana was back in the starting lineup Sunday, Sept. 28.

Detroit Tigers SS Eugenio Suarez (knee) is sitting out due to a sore left knee Thursday, June 5. He injured the knee on an awkward slide into second base Wednesday, June 4. SS Andrew Romine (shoulder) appeared to hurt his shoulder while diving for a ball Wednesday, but he was able to suit up and play Thursday.

Tigers | Eugenio Suarez recalled

Wed, 04 Jun 2014 12:03:14 -0700

The Detroit Tigers recalled SS Eugenio Suarez from Triple-A Toledo Wednesday, June 4.

Fantasy Tip: Suarez isn't the defender that Andrew Romine is, but he has much more upside with the lumber. Romine has been struggling at the plate, so Suarez could see some starts in order to get some offensive production from the position. Consider him in AL-only leagues for middle infield depth.

Tigers | Jose Iglesias officially ruled out for season

Wed, 04 Jun 2014 11:09:43 -0700

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) has officially been ruled out for the rest of the season. He's recovering from stress fractures in both of his shins. "We do not plan on having Iglesias back with us this year," general manager Dave Dombrowski said, adding that Iglesias "is progressing as projected, but we do not think he will be ready at any point this season." SS Andrew Romine has been starting at shortstop and his hitting just .200 with a .252 OPS in 39 games. SSs Eugenio Suarez or Hernan Perez may be called up eventually.

Fantasy Tip: You can now officially cut bait from Iglesias in all redraft leagues if you were holding out hope for a late-season return. Romine, because of his offensive deficiencies, should only be owned in AL leagues.

Tigers | Expected to have platoon at SS

Sun, 20 Apr 2014 19:47:49 -0700

The Detroit Tigers are expected to use INF Danny Worth and SS Andrew Romine as a platoon at shortstop moving forward. Manager Brad Ausmus said the team will not use a strict lefty-righty platoon at the position.

Tigers | Alex Gonzalez released

Sun, 20 Apr 2014 11:22:58 -0700

The Detroit Tigers have released SS Alex Gonzalez. "We need to have a little more range defensively at shortstop," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "We just didn't see it there and didn't see it getting better so we figured it was time to make the move." In a corresponding move, INF Danny Worth had his contract purchased from Triple-A Toledo.

Fantasy Tip: In addition to displaying limited range, Gonzalez was only batting .167 (5-for-30) at the time of his release. Light-hitting SS Andrew Romine, who had been in a platoon with Gonzalez, will see most of the action at the position.

Tigers | Stephen Drew open to one-year deal

Fri, 21 Mar 2014 13:13:24 -0700

Free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox) is open to signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers, according to a person familiar with Drew's thinking. Drew is believed to want $14 million on a one-year contract. For now, SS Andrew Romine figures to share shortstop duties with SSs Danny Worth or Hernan Perez. Drew would likely want to wait until after opening day to sign, so that there won't be compensation attached to his name when he becomes a free agent the following season.

Tigers | Andrew Romine acquired

Fri, 21 Mar 2014 13:11:09 -0700

The Detroit Tigers acquired SS Andrew Romine from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, March 21, in exchange for SP Jose Alvarez. Romine is a switch hitter that could compete with SSs Danny Worth and Hernan Perez for a starting job with SS Jose Iglesias (shins) out.

Fantasy Tip: Romine and Worth are probably Detroit's best options, but they're both defensive-minded shortstops. If Detroit isn't satisfied, they could look to sign Stephen Drew. A platoon could develop between Worth and Romine, meaning they're only valuable in deep AL-only leagues.

Angels | Andrew Romine switch-hitting again

Wed, 11 Sep 2013 21:45:44 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim INF Andrew Romine elected to hit exclusively from the left side midway through the 2012 season, but he has resumed switch-hitting this season. He hit .327 in the minors in the month of July, and had picked up six hits over his past 17 at-bats with the big club Wednesday, Sept. 11.
