Royals | Kris Medlen has rotator cuff injury

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:07:17 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (shoulder) is dealing with right rotator cuff inflammation. His 15-day disabled list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 11. Manager Ned Yost said both Medlen and SP Chris R. Young (forearm) should be able to return when they're eligible to come off the DL. SPs Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy will serve as fill-in starters in the meantime. Gee will throw against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, May 14, and Duffy will go Sunday, May 15. Duffy will begin on a 50-pitch limit.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Medlen nor Young are guaranteed to return to a rotation spot when they're healthy after really struggling before their injuries. Gee and Duffy aren't long-term solutions and aren't attractive options for the spot starts despite juicy matchups against the Braves. Both Gee and Duffy are unlikely to pitch deep in their starts this weekend. Keep tabs on Kyle Zimmer and Miguel Almonte in the minors, as both young pitchers could become options for the rotation at some point this year.

Royals | Danny Duffy starting Sunday

Thu, 12 May 2016 13:13:42 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy will start against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, May 15. He will be limited to 45 to 50 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: While Duffy couldn't have drawn a more favorable opponent to make his 2016 debut start against, it'll be tough to make it through five innings to put himself into position to register a win. Plus, Duffy had an unimpressive 4.35 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 through his 24 starts last season. He is an add candidate in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, but in the majority of formats, leave Duffy to the waiver wire.

Royals | Danny Duffy likely to pitch in relief

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 08:36:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals P Danny Duffy appears likely to start the 2016 season in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy would have had some fantasy value in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues with an impressive spring performance but can be ignored as long as he's being used in a relief role.

Royals | Two spots in KC rotation up for grabs

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 08:10:39 -0800

Kansas City Royals SPs Kris Medlen, Chris R. Young, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee are expected to compete for the final two spots in the starting rotation during spring training, according to manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland.

Fantasy Tip: Yost hinted that SPs Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez would likely be the first three starters in the rotation, although he is hesitant to name an Opening Day starter. Owners in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues should keep tabs on this competition throughout spring training and the winners are worthy of consideration as late-round fliers in this year's fantasy drafts.

Royals | Danny Duffy signs one-year contract

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 12:01:08 -0800

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy avoided arbitration and signed a one-year, $4.225 million deal, which is nearly a $2 million raise.

Fantasy Tip: It's a well-deserved raise for Duffy, who has been mostly successful since going through Tommy John surgery earlier in his career. While he regressed a bit last year after posting a 2.53 ERA and .209 opposing batting average in 2014, the 27-year-old southpaw still has some promise and could be a nice sleeper as long as he has a rotation spot nailed down.

Royals | Danny Duffy headed to the bullpen

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 12:54:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy will pitch out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season and will compete for a spot on the playoff roster.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) isn't worth a roster spot outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed formats, and even in those deep formats, it isn't likely he produces any significant fantasy returns. Jeremy Guthrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is entering the rotation, and he sports a 5.65 ERA through 23 starts this season. You'll want to avoid Guthrie in all formats, as at best, he is a desperation start in an A+ matchup.

White Sox | Adam LaRoche not starting Saturday

Sat, 05 Sep 2015 14:29:29 -0700

Chicago White Sox 1B Adam LaRoche is not starting Saturday, Sept. 5, against the Kansas City Royals. 1B Jose Abreu is batting third in the lineup against Royals SP Danny Duffy.

Fantasy Tip: LaRoche ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) only has a .250 mark against Duffy, making him a likely candidate to shut down in this lefty vs. lefty matchup. Abreu ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) is not a bad option against Duffy at all, with a .333 career mark.

Royals | Danny Duffy tagged with loss

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 19:23:44 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy (6-6) allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings in a loss to the Boston Red Sox Thursday, Aug. 20, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) has now allowed five runs in two of his last five outings. On the other hand, he has allowed a combined five runs in the other three starts, spanning 16 1/3 innings. He will make his next start against the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Royals | Danny Duffy stays hot

Sun, 19 Jul 2015 17:52:47 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy allowed one run on six hits over eight innings in a win over the Chicago White Sox Sunday, July 19, and he has a 1.33 ERA in three starts in July.

Fantasy Tip: There is no reason to expect Duffy ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) to maintain this pace, but he is pitching well enough right now to consider using as a high-risk, high-reward option at FantasyScore in his next start Friday, July 24, against the Houston Astros.

Royals | Danny Duffy returning Wednesday

Sat, 20 Jun 2015 13:36:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy (biceps) will return from the disabled list Wednesday, June 24, to face the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has lights-out stuff when he's right, but we'd lean towards giving him a start before using him on FantasyScore.
