Royals | Danny Duffy can't escape fifth

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 14:21:10 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy registered a no-decision in his start Wednesday, June 22, against the New York Mets. The left-hander went 4 2/3 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and four walks. He also struck out eight.

Fantasy Tip: Well, the strikeouts were there, as Duffy recorded eight or more K's for the third time in his past four outings, but other than that, this was a disappointing outing from the 27-year-old. Prior to this afternoon's assignment, Duffy was contributing mostly steady work, having allowed three runs or less in all but one of his seven starts, so owners will just have to hope he gets back on track his next time out. He's still someone worth owning in most leagues.

Royals | Danny Duffy posts first 10-K game

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 13:49:39 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy turned in his easily the best of his six starts this season against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, June 11, yielding only three singles and three walks while fanning a career-high 10 over six innings for his second win of the season.

Fantasy Tip: This outing makes up for his lone poor start on May 27 - when he allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings versus the White Sox - since joining the rotation in the middle of last month. Duffy has struck out 25 over his last three outings spanning 18 1/3 innings, boosting his K/9 rate to 10.8 - a mark that dwarfs his the 6.81 and 6.72 he posted in 2014 and 2015, respectively. He obviously deserves to remain in fantasy lineups despite a potentially difficult scheduled start Thursday at home against the Detroit Tigers.

Royals | Danny Duffy matches career high

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 19:51:02 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy (calf) allowed two runs, five hits and no walks while tying a career high with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a loss Monday, June 6, against the Baltimore Orioles. Duffy was also hit in the left calf by a line drive but he was able to remain in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy posted a quality start, but was unable to avoid the L. Still, this was an impressive performance and DFS players and AL-only fantasy owners might want to remember Duffy in the short term.

Royals | Danny Duffy earns first win

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 21:53:09 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, June 1. He walked none and struck out six to earn his first win of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy's first win came in his fourth start of 2016, but the Royals have won all four -- the southpaw was getting stretched out in his first two starts and didn't pitch deep enough into the game to earn a "W." His ratios and strikeouts are quite good, and as long as he's in the rotation Duffy has some AL-only appeal.

Royals | Kris Medlen has rotator cuff injury

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:07:17 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (shoulder) is dealing with right rotator cuff inflammation. His 15-day disabled list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 11. Manager Ned Yost said both Medlen and SP Chris R. Young (forearm) should be able to return when they're eligible to come off the DL. SPs Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy will serve as fill-in starters in the meantime. Gee will throw against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, May 14, and Duffy will go Sunday, May 15. Duffy will begin on a 50-pitch limit.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Medlen nor Young are guaranteed to return to a rotation spot when they're healthy after really struggling before their injuries. Gee and Duffy aren't long-term solutions and aren't attractive options for the spot starts despite juicy matchups against the Braves. Both Gee and Duffy are unlikely to pitch deep in their starts this weekend. Keep tabs on Kyle Zimmer and Miguel Almonte in the minors, as both young pitchers could become options for the rotation at some point this year.

Royals | Danny Duffy starting Sunday

Thu, 12 May 2016 13:13:42 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy will start against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, May 15. He will be limited to 45 to 50 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: While Duffy couldn't have drawn a more favorable opponent to make his 2016 debut start against, it'll be tough to make it through five innings to put himself into position to register a win. Plus, Duffy had an unimpressive 4.35 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 through his 24 starts last season. He is an add candidate in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, but in the majority of formats, leave Duffy to the waiver wire.

Royals | Danny Duffy likely to pitch in relief

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 08:36:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals P Danny Duffy appears likely to start the 2016 season in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy would have had some fantasy value in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues with an impressive spring performance but can be ignored as long as he's being used in a relief role.

Royals | Two spots in KC rotation up for grabs

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 08:10:39 -0800

Kansas City Royals SPs Kris Medlen, Chris R. Young, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee are expected to compete for the final two spots in the starting rotation during spring training, according to manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland.

Fantasy Tip: Yost hinted that SPs Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez would likely be the first three starters in the rotation, although he is hesitant to name an Opening Day starter. Owners in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues should keep tabs on this competition throughout spring training and the winners are worthy of consideration as late-round fliers in this year's fantasy drafts.

Royals | Danny Duffy signs one-year contract

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 12:01:08 -0800

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy avoided arbitration and signed a one-year, $4.225 million deal, which is nearly a $2 million raise.

Fantasy Tip: It's a well-deserved raise for Duffy, who has been mostly successful since going through Tommy John surgery earlier in his career. While he regressed a bit last year after posting a 2.53 ERA and .209 opposing batting average in 2014, the 27-year-old southpaw still has some promise and could be a nice sleeper as long as he has a rotation spot nailed down.

Royals | Danny Duffy headed to the bullpen

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 12:54:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy will pitch out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season and will compete for a spot on the playoff roster.

Fantasy Tip: Duffy ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) isn't worth a roster spot outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed formats, and even in those deep formats, it isn't likely he produces any significant fantasy returns. Jeremy Guthrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is entering the rotation, and he sports a 5.65 ERA through 23 starts this season. You'll want to avoid Guthrie in all formats, as at best, he is a desperation start in an A+ matchup.
