Mets | Wilmer Flores will be 100%

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 14:25:40 -0800

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores (leg) is working out at full strength and says he will be 100% for spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Flores has some surprisng pop for a middle infielder (16 homers in 137 games), but a utility role will severely limit his fantasy potential to deep NL-only games.

Mets | Wilmer Flores to be super-utility player

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 18:20:43 -0800

New York Mets INF Wilmer Flores is expected to be used in a super-utility role during the 2016 season, according to manager Terry Collins, who noted that he is capable of playing all four infield positions.

Fantasy Tip: Flores platooned at shortstop last year with Ruben Tejada, batting .263 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in 137 regular-season contests. However, the offseason acquisition of SS Asdrubal Cabrera means that it is uncertain how much playing time Flores will receive while spelling Cabrera, 3B David Wright, 2B Neil Walker and 1B Lucas Duda. His ability to hit for power means he should still be selected in the middle rounds of NL-only fantasy leagues and the later rounds of mixed leagues.

Mets | Wilmer Flores sheds walking boot

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 17:02:05 -0800

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores (ankle) recently shed the walking boot which was protecting his fractured left ankle and has been working out at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He hopes to resume hitting later this week.

Fantasy Tip: Flores is expected to be healthy by the time spring training camp opens. He will split time with Ruben Tejada at shortstop for the Mets, although he is considered the more attractive fantasy option because of his ability to hit for power. He hit .263 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in 137 regular-season games last year, although concerns about his playing time could cause him to fall to the later rounds of drafts.

Mets | Ruben Tejada, Wilmer Flores to compete

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 15:32:36 -0800

New York Mets SSs Ruben Tejada and Wilmer Flores will compete for the starting shortstop job next year, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Both Tejada and Flores are now rehabbing from injuries. Tejada broke his leg in the playoffs and Flores fractured his ankle in winter ball. Both should be healthy for next season. Flores is the more attractive fantasy piece because of his ability to hit for power, while Tejada is strictly defensive-minded.

Mets | Wilmer Flores has fractured ankle

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 14:05:35 -0800

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores (ankle) has been diagnosed with a fractured left ankle and is in a walking boot, according to assistant general manager John Ricco. Flores is expected to be ready for spring training. He suffered the injury being hit by a pitch in winter ball Nov. 26. Flores is on track to be the team's opening day starter at shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: Flores will split time at the 6 with Ruben Tejada, who is recovering from a broken leg suffered in the postseason. Flores is more attractive in deep mixed leagues for middle infield depth because of his power stroke.

Mets | Wilmer Flores injured in winter ball

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:55:28 -0800

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores (ankle) was hit by a pitch in his left ankle in winter ball and has been shut down. However, assistant general manager John Ricco said Flores is just dealing with a bruise.

Fantasy Tip: Flores should be just fine for spring training next year. He's intriguing as a middle infielder because of his pop, but concerns about his playing time are justified. He's more of a commodity in NL-only and really deep mixed fantasy leagues in 2016.

Mets | Dilson Herrera could start at 2B

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 12:01:36 -0800

New York Mets 2B Dilson Herrera is a "viable alternative" at second base if 2B Daniel Murphy does not return in 2016. The Mets are expected to make a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer to Murphy by the deadline Friday, Nov. 6. The Mets are prepared to use a middle-infield combination of SSs Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada and Herrera next year. Herrera hit .211 with three home runs and six RBI in 90 at-bats in the majors in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Herrera hit 11 home runs and had a .331 batting average on the farm this year before calling up, so he surely has intriguing power for a middle infielder, and if he earns the starting job at the keystone if Murphy leaves, he definitely would garner attention in standard fantasy leagues as a middle infield option.

Mets | Daniel Murphy may be elsewhere in 2016

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 00:55:59 -0700

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy will not likely be retained next season by the team despite a late surge during the regular season and a strong postseason. The Mets may install either 2B Dilson Herrera or 2B Wilmer Flores at the position.

Fantasy Tip: New York Post writer Joel Sherman has heard Murphy ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) may be looking at a four-year deal worth $52 million. The club wants to keep the pitching staff together. Beware of Murphy for now, as his draft status is jumping high on some boards because of all his home runs.

Mets | Wilmer Flores taking over at SS

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 14:05:31 -0700

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores is set to take over as the starter at shortstop with SS Ruben Tejada's (leg) season over. The Mets also added SS prospect Matthew Reynolds to their playoff roster for the division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Reynolds could become the second player in modern history to make his major league debut in the playoffs. He hit .267 with six home runs and 65 RBI in 445 at-bats for Class AAA Las Vegas in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Flores ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is a downgrade defensively but has much more pop in his bat than Tejada. Flores hit .263 (127-for-483) with 16 home runs and 59 RBI for the Mets this year. He faces a lefty in Game 3 of the division series tonight, and he had a .310 average and seven homers against them this year, making him worth consideration as a sleeper pick.

Mets | Ruben Tejada expected to start

Wed, 07 Oct 2015 09:41:05 -0700

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada is expected to be the starter at shortstop for Game 1 of the division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, Oct. 9, according to manager Terry Collins. SS Wilmer Flores (illness) lost 10 pounds over a five-day span recently while dealing with strep throat. Tejada is batting .357 with three walks in 17 career plate appearances against Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Tejada's ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) good numbers against Kershaw, he's a big gamble on FantasyScore and should only be used for salary cap relief. Flores ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) should be avoided altogether.
