Pirates | John Jaso out vs. lefty

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 15:34:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners left-handed SP Wade Miley Wednesday, June 29. 3B David Freese starts at first base and is batting cleanup. Also, SS Jordy Mercer is moved up to the leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso usually sits versus southpaws, so don't read too much into it. Miley is returning from the DL for the start, so Freese and Mercer definitely have appeal in daily formats tonight. Freese has a prime opportunity to stuff the stat sheet hitting in the heart of the order, and he's done considerably better against lefties this year (.340/.407/.547 with two home runs).

Pirates | Two Bucs out of the lineup

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 07:56:35 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) and 1B John Jaso are out of the lineup Monday, June 27. 1B David Freese is hitting second, and OF Sean Rodriguez is hitting seventh. SS Jordy Mercer (head) is back in there leading off after exiting the previous game due to a head ailment.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is having a solid .290-6-30 season, and he's a low-end option against Scott Kazmir. Mercer hits .315 off of lefties and is worth consideration in DFS as well. Rodriguez has struggled this month and isn't worth using today.

Pirates | John Jaso not starting Sunday

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 14:06:34 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not starting Sunday, June 26, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. 3B David Freese will play first base and bat second against Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso is out because of the lefty vs. lefty matchup. Freese is hitting .291-6-27 this year and has done well when starting, so give him a flyer in DFS leagues.

Pirates | John Jaso sitting out

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 12:47:59 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner Monday, June 20. 3B David Freese will start at first base and is batting fourth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is still posting solid numbers even though he is not an everyday starter anymore. He is hitting .378 with two home runs and five RBI against left-handed pitchers this season. He will have a tough matchup Monday but should still be an option in some daily fantasy leagues.

Pirates | Three Pirates regulars out

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 14:35:03 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte (face), OF Gregory Polanco and 1B John Jaso are out of the lineup Saturday, June 18. 1B David Freese is hitting fifth, OF Matt Joyce hits sixth and OF Sean Rodriguez hits seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is hitting .349 against lefties this year, and he's a decent flyer against Jon Lester. Joyce hits left-handed, but he hits lefties to a .313 clip. He's a decent low-end grab, too. Rodriguez's production has hit a freefall, but he hits .289 against lefties. He's an iffy low-end flyer.

Pirates | David Freese starting vs. Mets

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 13:10:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B David Freese is starting at first base and batting fifth against New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon Thursday, June 16. 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Freese has performed well this season with a .298/.377/.448 slash line, and hitting in the heart of the lineup when he plays maintains his fantasy value for deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Jaso's ability to reach base has also kept his value above water, and he remains viable in the same deeper formats.

Pirates | David Freese back in lineup

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 10:25:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B David Freese (hand) is playing first base and hitting third against New York Mets SP Steven Matz in Game 1 of a doubleheader Tuesday, June 7. 1B John Jaso starts on the bench against the lefty.

Fantasy Tip: Freese has minimal power (four home runs in 165 at-bats), but he's swung the bat well this year to the tune of a .291/.374/.424 slash line and is hitting .368 (14-for-38) with two of his four long balls off of lefties. Consider Freese a decent value play against Matz this afternoon.

Pirates | John Jaso out of the lineup

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 09:20:01 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Hector Santiago Sunday, June 5. 1B Sean Rodriguez will start at first base and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez has received playing time at multiple positions this season and is hitting .314 with one home run and six RBI against left-handed pitchers. He should have some value in daily fantasy leagues, but owners should be able to find better players for their lineups.

Pirates | John Jaso sitting vs. southpaw

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 13:34:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 2. 3B David Freese is starting at first base and batting third against Miami Marlins SP Wei-Yin Chen Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso rarely starts against left-handed pitchers, and it further limits his fantasy upside. Reserve Jaso to deep mixed and NL-only leagues because he offers minimal returns in the home run and stolen base columns. Freese has started six of the past seven games, and he is having a solid campaign with 27 runs, four home runs, 18 RBI and a .296/.377/.432 slash line. Freese is a viable low-end starter in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang sitting vs. Marlins

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 12:37:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 1. 1B John Jaso draws into the lineup at first base and is batting eighth against Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Kang has been excellent since returning from injury with nine runs, six home runs and 18 RBI through just 20 games. He is a solid starting option at third base or shortstop in all fantasy formats. Jaso owns a disastrous .177/.307/.229 career slash line against left-handed hurlers and rarely starts against them. It isn't out of the question to bench him Wednesday.
