Tigers | Ian Kinsler scratched

Tue, 24 May 2016 14:19:12 -0700

Detroit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler (flu) has been scratched from the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24, due to flu-like symptoms. SS Mike Aviles, who was supposed to play in left field, has been moved to second base and will bat eighth. OF Cameron Maybin will now bat leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: Kinsler's absence shifted the lineup around for the evening, most notably with Maybin going to leadoff. He has been the Tigers' hottest hitter in the last week, and Maybin definitely carries increased fantasy value with that hot bat. Aviles' value is still nonexistent.

Tigers | Jose Iglesias out of lineup Sunday

Sun, 15 May 2016 08:51:17 -0700

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias is not in the starting lineup against Baltimore Orioles SP Kevin Gausman Sunday, May 15. INF Mike Aviles will play shortstop and bat ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles is just 4-for-30 (.133) with 11 strikeouts this season and should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Tigers | J.D. Martinez takes a seat

Fri, 06 May 2016 13:48:10 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 6. 3B Mike Aviles is starting in right field and is hitting in the two-hole against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles doesn't offer much (.231, one RBI in 24 at-bats) but does have two home runs in only five at-bats against Hamels in his career. It's too small a sample size to bank on, though, and even with the cushy lineup spot, Aviles makes for a low-end deep sleeper play in DFS action.

Tigers | Three Detroit regulars out

Thu, 05 May 2016 11:25:35 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann, SS Jose Iglesias and OF Anthony Gose are not in the starting lineup Thursday, May 5. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia is doing the catching and hitting seventh, 3B Mike Aviles is at the 6 and is batting eighth, and SS Andrew Romine is in center field and is hitting ninth against Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer.

Fantasy Tip: Salty got hot with regular playing time when McCann was on the DL, but has only four hits in his last 29 at-bats (.138). He's a low-end catching option if you're looking to save salary cap space. Aviles and Romine are desperation daily picks and should be avoided.

Tigers | Mike Aviles starting vs. Twins

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 12:41:57 -0700

Detroit Tigers INF/OF Mike Aviles is starting at shortstop and batting seventh against Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes Friday, April 29. SS Jose Iglesias is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles hasn't played much this season and is just 3-for-16 without an extra-base hit. He is nothing more than a desperation flier in all fantasy formats Friday. Iglesias is a respectable contact hitter with a .298/.349/.360 slash line dating back to last season, but you can't rely on him for counting stats, and he should be left to cavernous mixed and AL-only formats.

Tigers | Ian Kinsler scratched from lineup

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 14:46:47 -0700

Detroit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler (illness) has been scratched from the lineup Monday, April 25, against the Oakland Athletics due to flu-like symptoms. 2B Mike Aviles will take his place at second base and bat ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Bad break for Kinsler, who is out to a wonderful start this year and has even recorded at least one hit in all but two games he's played in. Aviles will get the start as a result, but isn't worth utilizing in any daily formats. After all, he's picked up just one hit thus far in 12 at-bats. Jose Iglesias, however, is worth a look, as he gets bumped up into the leadoff spot this evening.

Tigers | No Justin Upton vs. Cleveland

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 07:21:53 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton is not in the starting lineup Sunday, April 24. INF/OF Mike Aviles is starting in left field and batting seventh against Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Upton where you can Sunday. His 30 strikeouts pace the American League, and the slugger has just one home run and three RBI through his first 16 games. Remember, Upton is notoriously streaky, so Expect the offense to come in bunches eventually. Carrasco has limited opponents to just two runs and eight hits through his past two starts, which makes Aviles a risky fantasy start in all formats Sunday.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos resting

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 13:03:43 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 19. 3B Mike Aviles is starting at the hot corner and is hitting seventh against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles doesn't do much for fantasy owners. He hit .231 with only five home runs in limited duty last season and should be avoided in all formats.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos will not start

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 07:42:41 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is not in the starting lineup against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia Saturday, April 9. SS Mike Aviles will start at third base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles likely will receive playing time at multiple positions but should not receive a lot of at-bats this season. Owners probably can avoid Aviles and look for other options.

Tigers | Mike Aviles joins Tigers

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 16:13:46 -0800

Free-agent SS Mike Aviles (Indians) agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers Friday, Dec. 18, according to sources. Aviles hit .231 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 98 games with the Cleveland Indians in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles' real-life value comes as a super-utility player that can play basically everywhere in the infield. He'll strictly be a bench guy for Detroit, most likely. He has limited power and doesn't do anything exceptionally well, so he's only a depth piece in really deep AL-only formats.
