Nationals | Daniel Murphy has big game Wednesday

Wed, 04 May 2016 15:42:08 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy racked up a season-high four hits Wednesday, May 4, against the Kansas City Royals. He finished the afternoon 4-for-5 with his fourth home run of the season, four runs scored and three RBI. He also had a double.

Fantasy Tip: It's no secret that Murphy has been absolutely blazing in his first year with the Nationals. In fact, he's picked up at least one hit in all but three of the 26 games he's played in. He's now up to a remarkable .398 batting average, while providing some power stats as well. His owners must be thrilled with the decision they made in selecting him on draft day relatively late in the event.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy out of the lineup

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 07:53:42 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy is not in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Phil Hughes Saturday, April 23. 2B Stephen Drew will start at second base and is batting fifth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Drew has received some starts over the first few weeks of the season and has gone 3-for-12 at the plate. Drew is valuable in NL-only leagues but is not a great option in other leagues.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy is en fuego

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 14:54:25 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy is hitting a cool .352/.406/.693 in his last 45 games including last year's playoffs. Murphy has 30 extra-base hits in that span.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy has transitioned nicely into the Nationals' lineup, and it doesn't hurt to hit just behind Bryce Harper and Co. Murphy doesn't run much these days, but his power growth is real, and he could contribute 20 long balls over the full season.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy on nine-game hitting streak

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 14:37:25 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy continued his torrid start to the season, going 2-for-5 from the fourth spot in the batting order on Sunday, April 17, for his fifth multi-hit effort during his nine-game hitting streak.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy may not be keeping the same ridiculous pace he was during last year's National League playoffs, but today's effort actually dropped his average this season from .438 to .432. The ex-New York Met has a touch matchup Monday against Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, but he's simply too hot to sit in fantasy right now.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy drives in three

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 18:19:48 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in a loss to the Miami Marlins Thursday, April 7.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy is batting .364 with a homer and five RBI through his first three games of the year. He should be viewed as a midrange second baseman in seasonal leagues and is worth starting in daily fantasy formats while he's on a hot streak.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy makes presence felt

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 19:15:02 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy posted a home run and go-ahead RBI double in the 10th inning in his team debut Monday, April 4, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy caught fire in the postseason with the Mets last year, and turned it into a big payday in D.C. This might have been one of the best expenditures in Washington in a long time.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy contract breakdown

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 12:32:47 -0800

Washington Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy will make just $8 million in 2016. His $37.5 million deal will pay him $12 million in 2017 and $17.5 million in 2018, including $5.5 million deferred without interest. The Nationals will owe $2.5 million of deferred money on Jan. 15 of 2019 and the rest a year later.

Nationals | Daniel Murphy agrees to terms with WAS

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 17:08:25 -0800

The Washington Nationals have agreed to terms with free-agent INF Daniel Murphy (Mets) on a three-year deal worth $37.5 million, according to a source. The Nats will lose their first-round pick in the 2016 MLB draft for signing him, while the Mets will receive a compensation pick between the first and second rounds. The deal is pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: The 30-year-old Murphy hit .281 with 38 doubles, 14 home runs and 73 RBIs in 130 regular-season games. At best, he should be considered a midrange second baseman in next year's fantasy drafts despite his postseason heroics, when he batted .328 with seven home runs and 11 RBIs in just 58 at-bats. Murphy should be a modest contributor in most offensive categories, with strong numbers in batting numbers and runs scored.

Nationals | Washington continues keystone search

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:57:10 -0800

Free-agent 2Bs Howie Kendrick (Dodgers) and Daniel Murphy (Mets) have both had contract discussions with the Washington Nationals, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Nationals have an opening in their middle infield, and Kendrick and Murphy would both remain solid low-end options at the keystone were they to sign with Washington. They each chip in modestly across all categories with especially strong numbers in batting average and runs column.

Nationals | Nats moving on from Brandon Phillips

Sat, 19 Dec 2015 12:48:29 -0800

Contrary to previous reports, the Washington Nationals appear unlikely to acquire 2B Brandon Phillips in a trade from the Cincinnati Reds and the club is now pursuing other options, according to multiple sources. The team could be interested in pursuing free-agent 2B Howie Kendrick (Dodgers) or improving their second base situation via trade. However, they appear unlikely to go after free-agent INF Daniel Murphy (Mets).

Fantasy Tip: In order for the deal to have been completed, Phillips would have had to waive his 10-five rights. He should be viewed as a midrange option at the keystone position who is capable of hitting for power, driving in runs and stealing bases, although his numbers are likely to decline somewhat due to age, nagging injuries and lack of protection in the lineup.
