New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada should start every game at shortstop through the All-Star break, according to manager Terry Collins. Mets 3B Eric Campbell will serve as his emergency backup.
Fantasy Tip: Desperate NL-only owners could consider Tejada, given his guaranteed playing time, but he brings little upside to the table.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday, June 7, that he is considering using SS Ruben Tejada in the leadoff spot going forward.
Fantasy Tip: More at-bats is always good news for a fantasy option. Tejada would see an increase in appeal, would still only be worth using in NL-only leagues and some of the deepest mixed formats.

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada belted a solo home run Saturday, May 31, against the Philadelphia Phillies to snap the longest active homerless drought in the majors. It was his first homer since Aug. 1, 2012, snapping a drought of 552 at-bats.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said SS Omar Quintanilla is not taking playing time away from SS Ruben Tejada even though Quintanilla is receiving his second straight start at shortstop Monday, May 5.

New York Mets SS Omar Quintanilla was in the starting lineup for the second time in four games Tuesday, April 15, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager Terry Collins insisted that it isn't a sign SS Ruben Tejada is losing the starting job. Collins cited Tuesday's inclusion of Quintanilla was a matchup issue, as Diamondbacks SP Bronson Arroyo had an opposing batting average of .295 by left-handed hitters (such as Quintanilla) last season, while righties hit just .219 against him.
Fantasy Tip: Tejada is hitting below the Mendoza line for the season, and his on-base percentage of .267 in 45 plate appearances does little for fantasy owners. For now, he is only worth using in the deepest of NL-only leagues until he starts to show some signs of life at the dish.

The St. Louis Cardinals have made SS Pete Kozma available in trade talks this spring. The New York Mets are not believed to be interested, as he is not really an upgrade over current SS Ruben Tejada.

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada is expected to open the season as the starting shortstop, with SS Omar Quintanilla backing him up. 2B Wilmer Flores will continue to make spring starts at shortstop, and he's expected to see more action at the 6 to start the year at Triple-A Las Vegas. The team hopes Flores' winter conditioning work will improve his range at shortstop. The Mets could consider bringing Flores up to replace Tejada if Tejada struggles early on.
Fantasy Tip: Tejada will be on a very short leash to start the year, and don't rule out the Mets making a trade if they feel they need to. Don't think about putting Tejada on your roster unless you're desperate for at-bats in an NL-only league.

New York Mets 2B Wilmer Flores will receive his third spring start at shortstop Tuesday, March 18, although manager Terry Collins said the move is unrelated to the struggles of SS Ruben Tejada. Tejada is hitting .120 (3-for-25) in camp. "I want to play him at shortstop," Collins said about Flores. "He's gone to this (fitness camp) thing this winter to where he worked very, very hard on his agility. I want to see it in action. The best place to see it is out in the middle of the field."

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada made his third error of the spring on a routine grounder Thursday, March 13, and also went 0-for-3 at the plate to move to 1-for-15 in Grapefruit League play. Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin continues to be available in a trade, and the pressure is likely mounting for the Mets to find a solution at the 6.
Fantasy Tip: It's gotten so bad for Tejada that the Mets are now considering giving Wilmer Flores time at shortstop. Franklin isn't a bad late-round flier stash in deep mixed leagues in case a trade happens.

New York Mets 2B/SS Wilmer Flores will start his first game at SS since 2011 on Tuesday, March 11. Given Ruben Tejada's struggles at the plate and in the field, they're willing to give Flores another shot, despite the fact his quickness and range weren't up to par. He's played short as a defensive replacement twice this spring and has had only routine fielding chances.
Fantasy Tip: He's only draft-worthy in NLs, but Flores has noticeable pop that could play well in a middle-infield slot for deep-mixed leaguers at some point in 2014 if he earns eligibility there.
