Pittsburgh Pirates RP Ernesto Frieri allowed a walkoff ninth inning home run in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, July 8. He has allowed eight ninth-inning home runs this year and is tied with Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed for the most of any pitcher in the majors this year.
Fantasy Tip: Frieri didn't endear himself to his new club with the gaffe Tuesday night. He clearly has the back seat to Mark Melancon for closer duties in Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired RP Ernesto Frieri from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for RP Jason Grilli.
Fantasy Tip: Frieri will likely slide in as Mark Melancon's setup man for now. However, he could prove to be a factor at some point this season. He should be picked up in NL-only leagues. If you're desperate for saves in mixed leagues, pick him up if you have space. However, Melancon has been relatively effective.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said RP Joe Smith will be the team's closer until RP Ernesto Frieri returns to form.
Fantasy Tip: Smith is worth grabbing in mixed leagues if you need saves and he's available.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said the team will not use one pitcher in the closer role and that the matchup will determine the closer each game, which seems to indicate the team is moving away from RP Ernesto Frieri. RP Joe Smith was used in the ninth inning Thursday, June 19, and RP Cam Bedrosian was given the chance to save the game but was not able.
Fantasy Tip: It appears Frieri will not be closing games for the time being. Owners looking for more saves should consider picking up Smith, because he appears to be next in line. Owners in deeper leagues and AL-only leagues could take a flier on Bedrosian in case he gets some save chances.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri wasn't used to start the inning in a save situation against the Cleveland Indians Thursday, June 19, because manager Mike Scioscia said Frieri "has been struggling." Scioscia wanted to go with a different look, and he felt RP Cam Bedrosian could get the job done.
Fantasy Tip: Of course, Bedrosian loaded the bases and Frieri entered the contest to allow a game-winning grand slam. If you own Frieri or are just searching for more saves, Joe Smith would be a good pickup right about now.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save Wednesday, May 14. RP Ernesto Frieri set up for him in the eighth inning.
Fantasy Tip: Now they're just playing mind games with fantasy owners. Smith set up for Frieri the previous day. Both players are worth owning right now, but our bets are still on Frieri in the long haul.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri closed out the ninth inning for his fifth save Tuesday, May 13.
Fantasy Tip: The telling sign that Frieri is back in the driver's seat is that Joe Smith pitched a perfect eighth inning. Frieri's last two appearances have resulted in saves. He looks to have a leg up in the closer committee once again.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Joe Smith recorded the save Saturday, May 10. He allowed two inherited runners to score but held on and induced a game-ending double play.
Fantasy Tip: Smith is behind Ernesto Frieri in the hierarchy for SVOs but will continue to see chances, especially if it's like today's when one arises a game after Frieri has one. Mike Scioscia's back-end drama will continue for the near future.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri recorded the save Friday, May 9, with a scoreless, two-strikeout ninth inning.
Fantasy Tip: Joe Smith, who's returning from an injury to his side, gave up a solo homer in the eighth but lucked into the win. This does wonders to extend Frieri's security in SVOs.
