Angels | Gregorio Petit out of options

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 19:16:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Gregorio Petit is out of options, so the team risks losing him if exposed to waivers. He has been seeing more playing time with SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) sidelined. Once Pennington returns, the team faces an interesting roster decision.

Fantasy Tip: Petit is only worth using right now in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues since his playing time is rather sporadic. When Pennington returns, Petit's at-bats could dry up even more.

Angels | Johnny Giavotella sitting vs. Astros

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 13:18:21 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Johnny Giavotella is not in the starting lineup Monday, June 20. SS Gregorio Petit is starting at second base and batting ninth against Houston Astros SP Doug Fister Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Giavotella is an option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues because of his consistent playing time. And now that Giavotella is healthy, Petit doesn't warrant a roster spot in seasonal leagues.

Angels | Gregorio Petit could play some 2B

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 15:04:41 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Gregorio Petit could see some playing time alongside 2B Johnny Giavotella once SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) comes off the disabled list this weekend, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Heading into Thursday, June 9, Petit is hitting .407 over his last eight games to raise his average to .288 on the year in 80 at-bats. Petit is the better defender over Giavotella, and Giavotella has an 0-for-17 slump entering Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Petit has never had more than 100 plate appearances in a single big league season, so the small sample size this year doesn't truly reflect his potential, and he's likely due for some regression after he's posted a career .264 average with only three home runs in five seasons. The 31-year-old will surely lose value in AL-only leagues once Simmons returns.

Angels | Two unlikely Halo power sources

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 22:02:02 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Jefry Marte and SS Gregorio Petit each hit home runs in the loss Wednesday, June 8, against the New York Yankees. Both players finished with two hits, with Marte driving in a run and Petit finishing with two RBIs.

Fantasy Tip: Marte and Petit are still only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only seasonal fantasy leagues, but remember them in DFS if they start again in the near future. They might be worth a roll of the dice at a low price.

Angels | Johnny Giavotella resting

Tue, 31 May 2016 16:16:12 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Johnny Giavotella is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 31. SS Gregorio Petit is at the keystone and is batting ninth against Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez.

Fantasy Tip: This looks like a normal day off for Giavotella. Petit is more known for his defense and is a slap hitter that provides virtually no fantasy upside. Ignore him everywhere. Petit is hitting .226 (12-for-53) with no home runs and four RBI on the year.

Angels | Yunel Escobar out Monday

Mon, 30 May 2016 14:19:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3B Yunel Escobar (wrist) is not in the lineup Monday, May 30. SS Gregorio Petit is starting in his place at third base and batting ninth opposite Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: Escobar left Sunday's game with a bruised left wrist, so it's no surprise to see him out of the batting order for this evening's contest. This will give Petit a chance, though the 31-year-old is very limited with the bat. Kole Calhoun is also affected by this, as he gets bumped back up into the leadoff spot.

Angels | Carlos Perez, Gregorio Petit out

Sun, 29 May 2016 11:18:48 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez and SS Gregorio Petit are not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Doug Fister Sunday, May 29. SS Cliff Pennington will start at shortstop and is batting seventh, while C Jett Bandy will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Bandy is hitting .286 in limited playing time this season but is not a strong option in most leagues. Pennington is hitting only .217 in the first two months and probably can be avoided in most leagues.

Angels | Carlos Perez, Brendan Ryan out

Sun, 15 May 2016 12:14:36 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez and SS Brendan Ryan are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez Sunday, May 15. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting seventh, while SS Gregorio Petit will start at shortstop and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto is hitting .231 with one home run and one RBI this month but should still be a starting candidate in two-catcher leagues and some daily fantasy leagues. Petit has gone 2-for-5 since joining the Angels but is not a great option at this point.

Angels | Cliff Pennington placed on disabled list

Fri, 13 May 2016 17:27:40 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have placed SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left hamstring. In a corresponding move, INF Gregorio Petit has been recalled from Class AAA Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington's tenure as the Angels' No. 1 shortstop was short-lived, after Andrelton Simmons (thumb) went down with a sprained left thumb that will have him sidelined for six to eight weeks. At this point, it is uncertain if Brendan Ryan will receive most of the action at short while Pennington is sidelined or if he will split time with Petit. However, neither player should be considered as anything more than middle infield depth in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Angels | Halos 2B competition open

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 12:08:14 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said the team's second base competition is open and will be between 2Bs Johnny Giavotella, Rey Navarro, Gregorio Petit and Cliff Pennington.

Fantasy Tip: Giavotella was the Angels starter for most of the year in 2015, and he should have the edge for the most playing time here, but his defense may betray him. Giavotella makes the most contact and has a little speed to contribute double-digit steals over a full season. None of these options are spectacular, though, so they're mainly filler in AL-only leagues.
