Angels | David Freese grabs pine

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 20:34:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3B David Freese (quadriceps) is healthy enough to play after having fully recovered from right quadriceps tightness, but manager Mike Scioscia kept him on the bench Monday, April 21, against the Washington Nationals. Freese was hitless in three at-bats with two strikeouts Sunday, April 20, to drop his average to .143. "There is a level of confidence that needs to grow with David," Scioscia said. "I think coming to a new team, league, he wants it to happen yesterday. He's working hard, understands what he's trying to do at the plate, and I think he will exhale when he gets some hits to fall in, and when he starts driving the ball again."

Angels | David Freese searching for new stance

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 09:42:04 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3B David Freese was dropped to the seventh spot in the batting order Tuesday, April 15, and he responded by hitting two singles. However, he's still hitting .170 (8-for-47) with a .231 on-base percentage and a .234 slugging percentage to start the year. Freese says he's not worried, but he has three singles and 10 strikeouts in 21 at-bats since OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) landed on the disabled list. "We have to get David in a comfort zone, and sometimes changing the neighborhood helps," manager Mike Scioscia said. "When David gets going, he's a big part of the middle of our lineup, but he's obviously searching for some things right now."

Freese, who is typically hot to start the year, insists he's not trying too hard to impress his new team. He's been studying film and working with hitting coaches Dave Hansen and Paul Sorrento to find a more comfortable stance that will help him use his hands to drive the ball the other way.

Fantasy Tip: It's highly unlikely that Freese ever matches his 2012 peak again, so you'd be better off expecting numbers similar to what he achieved in his final year in St. Louis. Until he gets going again, you might want to think about benching him. Remember, he can be very streaky.

Angels | David Freese off to poor start

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 06:27:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3B David Freese has five hits and 13 strikeouts in his first 43 at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: Has his bat slowed this much at soon-to-be 31 years of age? We're a little worried, but he's a good buy-low option that still has some pop in his bat.

Angels | More names involved in David Freese trade

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 12:10:45 -0800

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired 3B David Freese and RP Fernando Salas from the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, Nov. 22, in exchange for OF Peter Bourjos and OT Randal Grichuk. Grichuk was drafted a spot ahead of OF Mike Trout in 2009.

Cardinals | Peter Bourjos acquired

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 11:44:14 -0800

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired OF Peter Bourjos from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, Nov. 22, in exchange for 3B David Freese.

Fantasy Tip: The Cards are expected to shift Matt Carpenter to the hot corner now to allow Kolten Wong to become the every-day second baseman. Wong will become fantasy-relevant next year as middle infield depth and could be worth a starting spot in NL-only leagues eventually. Bourjos may earn a starting role in the outfield since St. Louis isn't sold on Jon Jay in center. Oscar Taveras will likely replace Beltran, who is expected to depart in free agency, in right field.

Angels | David Freese acquired

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 11:42:11 -0800

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired 3B David Freese from the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, Nov. 22, in exchange for OF Peter Bourjos.

Fantasy Tip: The Halos were desperate for a third baseman after mixing and matching with Alberto Callaspo, Luis A. Jimenez, Chris Nelson and others this past year. Freese's power should help an offense that struggled to generate runs in 2013, but his low BA and weak contact rates make him mainly corner infield depth for fantasy purposes. Expect Mike Trout to shift to center field to replace Bourjos.
