The Detroit Lions have the No. 5 overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and while Alabama CB Dee Milliner is the popular pick in various mock drafts, the team could also look to Brigham Young DE Ezekiel Ansah or Oregon DE Dion Jordan if they are unable to re-sign impending free-agent DE Cliff Avril. Lions | No franchise tag plans

Tue, 19 Feb 2013 10:09:43 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew once again reiterated that he has no plans to use the franchise tag on any of the team's players this offseason. Last year, the team placed the tag on DE Cliff Avril, but they would have to spend $12.7 million if they wanted to tag him again this season. S Louis Delmas (knees) would have been a candidate for the tag had he not injured both of his knees in the last two years. Detroit wants to re-sign Delmas, but to a short-term deal for less than the $6.8 million tag for safeties. The pool of free-agent safeties may be thin this year because of the cheap price to franchise them, and the Lions need to sign two safeties this offseason, which could drive up Delmas' price on the open market. DE Michael Johnson is a candidate for the franchise tag, too.

"Anything is possible," Avril said. "I would love to get Mario's deal. Who wouldn't? Those are some great numbers. My thing is I want to keep getting better. I'm still young. I'm only 26 years old. The sky is the limit as far as that. Those are some great numbers, hopefully we can get somewhere near there."

Lions | No discount for Cliff Avril

Thu, 14 Feb 2013 05:03:06 -0800

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DE Cliff Avril would like to re-sign with the team, but likely not for a hometown discount. "I don't know. It depends on the situation, honestly," Avril said. "It depends on why I would be taking less money, first off. I don't know, but we just have to get the numbers going and we'll see. I really don't know if I would take less right now."

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is not concerned about the status of impending free-agent DE Cliff Avril. Mayhew is confident Avril's impending free agency will be worked out, one way or another. "All those guys that are free agents, we'll continue to have discussions about," Mayhew said. "I've talked to a few of their agents. We have ample time to sort through those situations. If you go back and look through our history here, we haven't had a lot of free agents that we really wanted to have back that we didn't get back."

Fri, 08 Feb 2013 14:39:54 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he believes impending free-agent DE Cliff Avril can play either defensive end spot if he returns to the team. "He's a very good athlete. Lions | Cliff Avril thinks he can play in 3-4

Sun, 20 Jan 2013 14:40:46 -0800

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DE Cliff Avril said he believes he can play in a 3-4 defensive alignment. "Honestly, I can play in both systems," Avril said. "You know, I played linebacker in college. My senior year is when I pretty much moved to a full-time D-end, so I feel I can play both systems. Rushing is rushing. Either you're standing up or you're in a three-point (stance). Rushing the quarterback is the same thing to me, so I definitely feel I can do both."
