Padres | Everth Cabrera struggled in spring

Tue, 01 Apr 2014 19:47:36 -0700

San Diego Padres SS Everth Cabrera struggled offensively and defensively in the spring, leading the team with four errors, and having contact issues at the top of the order. He struck out 16 times in 61 at-bats during Cactus League spring play. "I attribute some of that to spring and maybe he was trying to hurry some things (defensively)," manager Bud Black said Tuesday, April 1.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera was suspended for the final 50 games of last season, so a slow start is not terribly shocking. He remains useful in all fantasy leagues for his speed potential, so be patient.

Padres | Everth Cabrera suspended

Mon, 05 Aug 2013 11:23:23 -0700

Major League Baseball announced that San Diego Padres SS Everth Cabrera will accept a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

Fantasy Tip: Alexi Amarista is likely to take over the majority of playing time at shortstop with Cabrera done for the season. Logan Forsythe can probably fill in there, too, when needed, although he doesn't have the speed and quickness to play the position like Amarista does. Amarista's speed will make him a stolen base asset in deep mixed leagues.

Major League Baseball announced the 12 names of those that will accept 50-game suspensions for their involvement in the Biogenesis scandal: Texas Rangers OF Nelson Cruz, Detroit Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta, Philadelphia Phillies RP Antonio Bastardo, New York Mets INF Jordany Valdespin, San Diego Padres SS Everth Cabrera, New York Yankees C Francisco Cervelli, Seattle Mariners C Jesus Montero, New York Mets OF Cesar Puello, Houston Astros RP Sergio Escalona, free-agent RP Fautino De Los Santos (Padres), free-agent RP Jordan Norberto (Athletics) and New York Yankees OF Fernando Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: These players will all miss the rest of the season, but it's unknown if any of them will play in postseason games if their team is eligible. You can safely drop all of these guys in single-year formats.

MLB | Biogenesis suspensions expected Monday

Fri, 02 Aug 2013 12:04:36 -0700

Major League Baseball is expected to hand down their list of Biogenesis suspensions Monday, Aug. 5. New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez, Texas Rangers OF Nelson Cruz, San Diego Padres SS Everth Cabrera, Detroit Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta and New York Yankees C Francisco Cervelli are among the list of names that are expected to be involved. It's unclear how long each player's suspension will be and which players plan on appealing the ruling.

Fantasy Tip: Popular opinion is that all of these players will take some sort of suspension without appeal, aside from A-Rod. Stay tuned on this ongoing scandal. If you own any of these players, hopefully you have already made backup plans to carry out the rest of the season without them.

MLB | Suspension announcements could come Friday

Wed, 31 Jul 2013 15:34:51 -0700

Major League Baseball has notified the players union which players they intend to suspend in their drug investigation of Biogenesis. The sides are trying to reach as many agreements as possible to avoid grievance hearings, and the announcements could come Friday, Aug. 2. Texas Rangers OF Nelson Cruz, San Diego Padres SS Everth Cabrera and Detroit Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta are a few of the other big names that are expected to be suspended.

Fantasy Tip: If you have any of these players on your roster, you should have already started making plans to add depth around them in case they were suspended. Jose Iglesias will retain his value in deep mixed leagues if he winds up taking over for Peralta.
