Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said RP Jose Veras will be taken out of the closer role for now.
Fantasy Tip: The team has not named a replacement at this point, but Pedro Strop and James Russell are the most likely options to receive save opportunities. Strop probably would get the first chance to close a game. Owners looking for saves can consider adding one of these relievers, but there is a chance Veras regains the job at some point.

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop pitched a perfect ninth to record the save Thursday, April 3.
Fantasy Tip: We reported yesterday that he may be gaining on closer Jose Veras. He has pitched three scoreless frames and can be added in mixed leagues for save speculators.

Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said both RPs Jose Veras and Wesley Wright were unavailable to pitch Thursday, April 3, because both relievers pitched in the team's 16-inning contest the night before.
Fantasy Tip: Veras blew the save against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday night and was pretty bad all spring, leading many to believe that the Cubs already preferred to use Pedro Strop in the ninth. That could be the case, eventually, or a committee approach could be used. Stay tuned. Strop is worth a stash in deep mixed leagues.

Chicago Cubs RP Jose Veras blew his first save chance of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, April 2.
Fantasy Tip: Veras' skills are slightly above average for a reliever. He struggled all spring, and this isn't a good start to the year. If things continue to go south quickly, the Cubbies may go elsewhere. Other candidates to close include Pedro Strop and James Russell and Wesley Wright.

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman is suggesting that RP Jose Veras will close for the team next season. He agreed on a one-year, $4 million deal Tuesday, Dec. 17, with $3.85 million base salary plus a $150,000 buyout on his $5.5 million option for the 2015 season.
Fantasy Tip: A lot can change between now and opening day. But for now, put Veras higher in your closer rankings than Pedro Strop. Veras sacrificed some dominance for control as the closer for the Houston Astros last year. The move to the National League should be nice, but he won't have as long a leash as he did in Houston if his control problems resurface.

The Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year, $4 million deal with free-agent RP Jose Veras (Tigers) Tuesday, Dec. 17. He has a $5.5 million option for the 2015 season.
Fantasy Tip: Veras will likely compete with Pedro Strop for the closer role in spring training. Until we know who has the upper hand, both should be late-round speculation additions to your relief corps.

The Chicago Cubs have mutual interest in free-agent RP John Axford (Cardinals) as they look to shore up their closer situation this offseason. Executive Theo Epstein said he won't really know who the team's closer is until the offseason is over. Axford has reportedly heard from 14 teams this winter. The Cubs believe RP Pedro Strop has the stuff to close, and RPs Kyuji Fujikawa (elbow) and Arodys Vizcaino (elbow) are recovering from Tommy John surgery.
