NFL | Jermichael Finley to have X-rays, MRI

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 15:47:38 -0700

Free-agent TE Jermichael Finley (neck) will have X-rays on his neck Thursday, April 10, and will undergo an MRI exam within two weeks. The scans will then be looked at by Dr. Joseph Maroon, the neurosurgeon who performed the spinal fusion on Finley last year. Finley hopes to share the results with interested teams if they are positive. The Green Bay Packers, Finley's former team, are one of the interested parties, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: Finley is unlikely to make a huge impact next year if he lands on a team. The odds may still be pretty low that he actually signs with a team this offseason, and that will depend largely on the results of his tests in the coming weeks.

NFL | Jermichael Finley still not cleared?

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 08:43:10 -0700

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said free-agent TE Jermichael Finley (neck) still isn't medically cleared to continue his playing career. Finley reportedly failed his physical with the Seattle Seahawks several weeks ago, and he's been working regularly with trainers in Minnesota and Arizona this offseason. "He had a serious injury. I know there is a lot of excitement, based on what I've been told. I haven't seen him work out, but I guess his workouts have gone really well. He's in great shape. I know he feels good. The reality is this injury is going to take some time. We'll continue to watch it," McCarthy said.

Fantasy Tip: Finley's injury was very serious and could still be career-threatening. If he does sign with a team, he'll be a huge risk, both in reality and for fantasy football gamers.

Free-agent TE Jermichael Finley (Packers) (neck) has been working out in full and there are reports he looks in tip-top shape. However, head coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday, Jan. 25, that a decision to potentially bring him back will come down to how the team doctors feel about the risk of re-injury. "It's great to hear that he's training and feels great and that's a big part of rehab," McCarthy said. "You feel good and everything, but you have to trust the information that's available to the doctors. I think you have to really be smart with those types of injuries."

"His fusion has to fully heal before he is 100 percent ready for contact, but we are all anticipating that occurring in the coming weeks. Jermichael is a rare breed that creates a mismatch for defenses. Whenever you have a player that can do that he is a valuable asset."

Cleveland Browns FS Tashaun Gipson said Wednesday, Oct. 23, that he has reached out to Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley (spine) via text message, but he wouldn't reveal the content or whether Finley responded. Finley suffered a spinal cord contusion when Gipson used his shoulder to hit Finley's helmet in the Week 7 game. "It was a scary feeling, scary sight, just seeing a guy's body limp like that out there," Gipson said. "You definitely never want to see something like that happen. To hear the latter effects of it, it's definitely unfortunate. All I can do is keep him in my prayers. I know he has family and he has kids. I've got kids. Packers | Jermichael Finley still in hospital

Wed, 23 Oct 2013 12:56:42 -0700

Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley (spine) remains in the hospital but continues to improve from the bruised spine he suffered in Week 7. Finley continues to seek opinions from other specialists on his condition. Putting him on season-ending Injured Reserve seems to be a real option for the club at this juncture. "We're going to wait until everything comes in," McCarthy said about Finley and his test results. "We'll do our due diligence and, obviously, not be premature on anything. We'll do what's in the best interest of Jermichael." Finley has already been ruled out for Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: We wouldn't blame you if you outright dropped Finley for another tight end option this week. The uncertainty surrounding his condition doesn't speak well for a possible return this season, and the four- to six-week timetable is probably being generous.

Packers | Jermichael Finley may need surgery

Wed, 23 Oct 2013 05:23:27 -0700

A highly regarded spinal surgeon said that Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley (neck) is unlikely to return without having spinal surgery. Wellington Hsu, an endowed professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and practicing surgeon with offices in Chicago, said that in most cases when a football player suffers spinal cord bruising it is a sign there is something amiss in the spinal canal that must be corrected. "If everything is normal there should be enough space in the spinal canal to absorb the force of that hit," Hsu said. "If there isn't enough space, then the spinal canal doesn't take the jolt very well."

Packers | Jermichael Finley out at least 4-6 weeks

Tue, 22 Oct 2013 11:51:25 -0700

Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley (spine) is expected to be released from the hospital within the next 24 hours and he'll likely miss at least four to six weeks, according to sources. Finley isn't likely to need surgery, and he should be able to resume his career. He could visit with more neurosurgeons and specialists regarding his spine injury. Doctors think his injury was caused by extreme torque and not by spinal compression. There is still a possibility that the Packers place Finley on season-ending Injured Reserve if they don't want to risk bringing him back this season.

Fantasy Tip: With an injury this severe, there are no guarantees that Finley will return at all this season. If you need the roster space to add tight end depth, you may need to cut bait on Finley. Andrew Quarless will step up in Finley's place and could be a decent backup option in this offense.
