Chargers | Stevie Johnson has chemistry with QB

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 10:16:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson showed good chemistry with QB Philip Rivers during offseason workouts.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson should have a solid role in the offense since he signed a three-year deal with the team this offseason. It is a good sign that he is building chemistry with Rivers, and he could be a late-round option in fantasy leagues this season.

Chargers | Stevie Johnson impressing at OTAS

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 12:19:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson was spry during organized team activities Tuesday, June 2. He showed his elusiveness and even caught some red-zone passes from QB Philip Rivers.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson will likely be the No. 3 receiver on the Chargers this year behind Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd. He was a big red-zone threat with the Buffalo Bills, so if he makes that his calling card again, he could hold some fantasy value this season.

Chargers | Stevie Johnson visited San Diego

Sat, 14 Mar 2015 10:19:01 -0700

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson (49ers) visited the San Diego Chargers Friday, March 13.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson would be a nice addition for the Chargers, but would still remain a less than attractive option for fantasy football squads. He should be considered a WR3 at best if he does sign with San Diego.

Browns | Stevie Johnson an option for Browns

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 16:04:01 -0700

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson (49ers) is being pursued by the Cleveland Browns.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson would probably have more value on the Browns than he would on most teams, with Cleveland having a relatively poor wide receiver corps. He would still be hard to deem as more than a WR3, however.

49ers | Stevie Johnson expected to be cut

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 08:22:01 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is expected to be released this offseason, according to sources. The 49ers would save $5.5 million in salary cap space.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson had only one 100-yard game this past season and finished the season with 435 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Johnson likely will not be able to find a starting job in free agency but could find an opportunity to be a No. 3 receiver. Johnson could be an option in the later rounds of drafts next season depending on his situation.

49ers | Stevie Johnson to start in 2015?

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 22:27:15 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson might be a clear starting candidate for the 2015 season if impending free-agents WR Anquan Boldin and/or WR Michael Crabtree are not brought back. Johnson stands to count a little more than $6 million against the salary cap. It is unknown if the team feels that cost is too steep.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's fantasy outlook hinges on the moves of the 49ers in the offseason, whether a first-round pick is used on a receiver and if Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton can take another giant leap forward.

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (knee) and WR Brandon Lloyd (quadriceps) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 5, and are listed as probable for Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson and Lloyd have not been involved much in the passing game over the past few weeks. Both receivers cost $3,000 on FantasyScore, but owners should be able to find better options.

Thu, 04 Dec 2014 18:45:20 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (ankle) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: After it appeared Johnson was emerging as a legitimate third option in San Francisco's passing attack, he has disappeared the last three weeks. Even against the struggling defense of the Oakland Raiders, Johnson isn't worth gambling on at FantasyScore.

49ers | Stevie Johnson not frustrated with role

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 11:18:34 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson, who is behind WRs Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd on the depth chart, isn't frustrated by his role in the offense. Johnson has 25 catches for 315 yards and three touchdowns this year, and he had 1,000 yards receiving in three of his four years with the Buffalo Bills. "No frustration at all," Johnson said. "(The) only sense of frustration is being a competitor, you know, wanting to do more. But it ain't like there's a bunch of pansies in front of me."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson has made a case to be ahead of Lloyd in the receiver pecking order, since he's been much more productive on less targets. However, Johnson will likely remain a frustrating fantasy play with all the mouths to feed in this aerial game.

49ers | Stevie Johnson very productive

Fri, 24 Oct 2014 11:39:00 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson has played only 20 percent of the snaps in the last month, but he's been the team's most effective receiver in that time. WR Brandon Lloyd has played 40 percent of the offensive snaps, but QB Colin Kaepernick has a passer rating of 127.8 on passes to Johnson and just 87.8 to Lloyd.

Fantasy Tip: The Niners are off this week, but look to insert Johnson in your FantasyScore lineups starting next week if he continues to see his playing time increase.

49ers | Stevie Johnson probable

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 15:21:36 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hip) practiced in full Friday, Oct. 17, and is probable for Week 7 against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson costs just $3,600 (7.2% of cap) in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos. If San Fran needs to pass frequently to stay in this game, Johnson could be a bargain play at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson suffered the injury in Week 6 but appears to have a chance to play in Week 7. Johnson costs $3,600 on FantasyScore and could be a flex option if owners want to use more money at other positions.

49ers | Stevie Johnson has big game

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 20:40:39 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson led the team with 103 receiving yards in the Week 3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and it was the first time a receiver on the team other than WRs Michael Crabtree or Anquan Boldin had more than 100 yards since WR Josh Morgan did it in 2010.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson can't be relied on for this kind of production often. The Niners abandoned the run game surprisingly, and the Arizona cornerbacks forced Colin Kaepernick to go to his third receiver more often.

49ers | Stevie Johnson not clicking with QB?

Wed, 27 Aug 2014 14:11:09 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson hasn't had great chemistry with QB Colin Kaepernick in the preseason. Kaepernick called Johnson's movements on the field "unorthodox." "I've pretty much taken it upon myself to be unorthodox to make up for some things that other receivers have you know, speed and quickness," Johnson said this week. "I set up my routes a little different. It's a gift and a curse. Because it can take some time to build chemistry with quarterbacks. But at the same time, the gift is that you know you can get open." WR Quinton Patton was on the field, not Johnson, when the team went with three-receiver sets in their preseason game over the weekend, and Johnson didn't play with Kaepernick at all. The team is unsure who will be the No. 3 receiver, leading to speculation that Johnson may be cut this weekend. Regardless, Kaepernick and head coach Jim Harbaugh believe that Johnson is making steady progress.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's lack of chemistry with Kaepernick is definitely concerning, as is his standing on the team's current depth chart. He's not worth drafting in any standard leagues.

49ers | Stevie Johnson should make team

Mon, 25 Aug 2014 15:11:43 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson has a very good chance to make the 53-man roster, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson probably will be the team's third receiver this season. Owners can consider taking a late-round flier on Johnson, but he likely will not be a weekly starter.

49ers | Stevie Johnson impresses

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 08:32:40 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) looked healthy in Day 1 of training camp. QB Colin Kaepernick raved about Johnson's quickness and deceptiveness that fuel his ability to create separation.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's fantasy prospects in this crowded receiving corps don't bode well for his week-to-week consistency in terms of numbers. He's a WR4 most weeks, with more upside depending on the matchup. But his presence improves this passing game as a whole, giving Kap more cred as a top-10 fantasy QB.

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 13:57:46 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) passed his physical and has been cleared to practice Thursday, July 23.

Fantasy Tip: Hamstring injuries are tricky and could linger as the year goes on even if a player thinks they are healthy. Johnson is probably a WR4 on draft day.

49ers | Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd not locks to make roster

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 20:21:05 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is the frontrunner for the No. 3 WR job, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, but he added that neither Johnson nor WR Brandon Lloyd is a lock to make the roster. Maiocco believes that Johnson's salary and the fact that Lloyd doesn't contribute on special teams would make them expendable if a younger receiver proves capable of filling the No. 3 WR role.

Fri, 09 May 2014 12:19:03 -0700

The Buffalo Bills traded WR Stevie Johnson to the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: This move comes as no surprise after the Bills traded up to land Clemson WR Sammy Watkins in the NFL Draft's opening round. Stay tuned for more details as to how the Bills intend to use their receiving corps, but it is fair to presume it will be a three-WR attack most weeks.

49ers | Acquire Stevie Johnson

Fri, 09 May 2014 12:04:58 -0700

The San Francisco 49ers are acquiring WR Stevie Johnson (Bills) from the Buffalo Bills for a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: WRs Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree, along with TE Vernon Davis, are likely to be the primary targets. Crabtree is injury-prone, and Boldin is getting long in the tooth, so it stands to reason that Johnson could have more value as the year wears on, when he fully understands the offense and builds chemistry with QB Colin Kaepernick. San Francisco is a run-centric offense, but this could signal a desire to open up the passing game. Johnson is probably no better than a WR4 on draft day, but he could be a nice low-ball trade target after his drafting owner is fed up with him.
