Cardinals | Jaime Garcia to open on DL

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 10:23:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation Monday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia's injury setback is good news for Carlos Martinez ($5,600, 11.2% of cap), who is now all but assured a spot in the starting rotation. Martinez becomes an even sneakier late-round acquisition to round out your fake pitching staff. His upside remains high, and his strikeout numbers could be on the rise with an added pitch this year.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia has arm fatigue

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 04:42:13 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (arm) was diagnosed with arm fatigue following a setback on Saturday, March 28. Garcia looks like he will miss the opening week of the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: And with that go his chances to make the rotation as a fifth starter, at least for now. Garcia will have some role with the team moving forward, either as an eventual No. 5 starter or something else. For now, keep an eye on either Carlos Martinez or Marco Gonzales for the fifth spot and knock Garcia down a couple pegs on your draft board.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia suffers setback

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 14:05:08 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was scratched from his start Sunday, March 29, before of discomfort in his problematic left shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: This pretty much opens the door for Carlos Martinez ($5,600, 11.2% of your cap) as the No. 5 starter. Martinez is at a FantasyScore price that yields a lot of upside if he can figure out his issues getting through the order a second and third time. Garcia will likely begin the season on the DL and could re-emerge later in the year.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia in line for No. 5?

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 11:37:33 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) threw 80 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday, March 24. Garcia is on a schedule that lines him up to be the fifth starter exiting spring training. Manager Mike Matheny acknowledged the team entered camp envisioning Garcia opening the season on the disabled list to prove his health. Garcia said with each passing day of spring he feels less concerned about his arm and more confident that he can get fatigued and still get outs.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia has had shoulder problems for three years, but he pitched well at times in spite of them. At $3,700 (7.4% of your cap), Garcia is well worth consideration for a cheap flyer on FantasyScore if his name is called.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia impressing front office

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 04:55:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia has impressed many critics in his battle for the fifth-starter job. "I didn't know what to expect from him frankly, and everything we've seen has been very surprising. And very positive," general manager John Mozeliak said.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Garcia makes the roster be wary, because he does have a history of arm issues. Still, he has pitched well enough to be considered in the mid to late rounds of most fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia making progress

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 14:57:13 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia has been making good progress in his comeback from thoracic outlet syndrome.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia has been dogged by injuries for the past couple seasons, but he might be on the right track. Still, keep an eye on his progress. Garcia should be watched closely in mixed and NL leagues, but his draft status has definitely taken a hit in recent months.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia says he's a starter

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:23:59 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is adamant that he is a starting pitcher. However, he's made just 16 starts in the last two seasons and thrown less than 100 innings because of injuries. Garcia had left shoulder surgery last year, specifically to address thoracic outlet syndrome. He is coming into spring training on a normal schedule, though, and he'll compete with SPs Carlos Martinez and Marco Gonzales for the final rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia's surgery last year was a significant one, and one that is typically tough to rebound from. We don't suggest taking a chance on Garcia in standard 12-team leagues unless he wins the final rotation spot, and that's a big if. Consider him an NL-only target as a cheap investment for now.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez has struggled as SP

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 14:51:29 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez, who is competing for a starting rotation spot this year with SPs Jaime Garcia and Marco Gonzales, has allowed opponents to hit .301 against him with a 1.70 WHIP in eight career starts. As a reliever, Martinez has a .255 batting average against and 1.28 WHIP. Opponents hit .435 against him the third time through the lineup when he was starting. Garcia has been limited to 36 starts since 2011 due to various injuries.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez presents an excellent buying opportunity in the late rounds of mixed leagues before he's won the rotation spot. He has the most upside of the trio and best raw stuff. But as Cassavell mentions, Martinez will need to alter his approach as a starter in order to change those numbers in a small sample size.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia's recovery fluid

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 13:11:07 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia's (shoulder) recovery timetable from thoracic outlet syndrome remains fluid, and the team likely won't know until spring training whether he can be a factor on opening day.

Cardinals | Joe Kelly activated

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 11:39:41 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals activated SP Joe Kelly (hamstring) from the disabled list Friday, July 11, and optioned SP Tyler Lyons to Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Also, SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day DL.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly will make the start tonight against the reeling Milwaukee Brewers. Kelly has a chance to stick in the rotation for a while after the injuries to Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia. He's worth a look in deep mixed leagues.
